  1. Publicly traded companies have to file their financials. Subsidiaries of publicly traded companies do not (except for insurance companies) unless they themselves are publicly traded (ie another publicly traded company owns a majority of the shares and the remainder trade on the open markets). I think Mosaic is quite obviously doing just fine. A fledgling label doesn't start new project after new project and issue more box sets than I can keep up with.
  2. Oh right - I kind of tried to block that trumpet playing...
  3. Ornette? Did I miss something?
  4. I still can't agree, but I'll leave the debate to the sports fans. Actually, if I do that it appears there is a consensus, so perhaps I had no place in this to start with.
  5. That's a beautiful animal.
  6. Sorry, no sympathy from me. If you are making a couple hundred grand a game and don't want to take a week off because you've somehow convinced yourself that you can't afford it, well... BTW, I think guaranteed contracts are one of the worst things in MLB. Right up there with arbitration.
  7. The players know the risks going in and are extremely well compensated for taking them. I don't see the problem. PS: I generally find spectator sports to be incredibly boring, for whatever that's worth. I'll watch a baseball game every now and then, but not lately since my home team (the SF Giants) is pretty much impossible to root for these days.
  8. Anyone know the market share of Jazz in other parts of the world? I cant imagine it would be that different from 3% From personal observation, I'd wager that it is quite a bit higher in France.
  9. Most people I meet actively dislike jazz. The majority of the remainder are indifferent. I think most people these days don't like music that demands their attention. Hence the pro-tools cutting and pasting of chorus parts to make sure each repeat sounds exactly the same. Just my theory.
  10. I'm pretty lukewarm on Masada, myself. I didn't think they sucked, but I think they rely on gimmicks too much. It's kind of hard for me to give an objective opinion because I was sitting in the middle of a bunch of high school and college kids who were cuckoo for cocoa puffs, and therefore I feel like I'm biased towards being unduly harsh on them as a knee jerk reaction. Objectively, I think they were probably pretty good but not great. If I had walked into a random club and heard the exact same music, I probably would have been pleasantly surprised. And they passed the hour leading up to Cecil Taylor taking the stage suitably quickly, which was their primary job that night, as far as I was concerned.
  11. It may be due to mailroom malfeasance, but I only actually receive about 50% to 60% of my music queue shipments.
  12. I'm pretty sure this is at the Vanguard. I'm going Saturday night.
  13. I'll answer your question by asking you another question: What discount? I bought tix as soon as they went on sale and got front center seats. It was easily worth it (half the price of equivalent seats at the Met, for instance).
  14. Now that you mention it, Tex Book Tenor does have much more open sound than Back at the Gig. If the Tyner Select has better sound for the Cosmos session than the record, I'll have to add it to my shopping list.
  15. I went Saturday night - Masada was pretty good, while Cecil Taylor was awesome (but not as awesome as the first time I saw AHA 3 at the Iridium a few months ago). I thought Zorn played up the chip-on-the-shoulder thing a bit much, as when he screamed "Do you have to play music that is 100 years old to get any respect in this place" after it took the house technician more than three seconds to dim the house lights after Zorn had requested he do so. Cecil Taylor really cleared out the room. He started his set by screaming, as if in unbearable pain, from off stage for about two minutes. When he finally came on, he continued screaming, then started chanting, and then started banging a cymbal against the piano. An elderly couple behind me contemplated calling the police. When he finally started playing, he was really on fire, but apparently most didn't share that opninion. I'd say about 80% of the house walked out on him.
  16. For me it wasn't exactly a "find," since I got it at Dusty Groove, but it was a fair price. I do like the music, but I have Asante and a really clean transfer from Cosmos, so I really can't justify the Select. I think we must be talking about two different things. I was responding to Guy.
  17. I love it. One of my best vinyl bin finds.
  18. I saw Haynes about six months ago. His group was really good.
  19. I put off buying this set for a long time because it seemed like a mish-mash of lesser Miles (for the period). As it turns out, this is the Miles box I probably reach for the most now (and I have them all). This definitely exceeded my expectations more than any other box I've bought in the past year or so.
  20. Cecil Taylor's mindblowing (imo) AHA 3 group w/ Masada opening at J@LC tonight. Isis on Tuesday night - my first metal show in at least 10 years.
  21. I really wish Wayne played out more. The two times I've seen him, he was absolutely incredible.
  22. I thought you were going to say the league had folded.
  23. I don't think anything Deerhoof has done has been incredible, but it's fun. I have to root for the home team.
  24. I have high hopes for the Panda Bear lp coming in a couple weeks.
  25. I enrolled pretty much when they started up, as I recall.
