Happy Birthday Victor Christensen
Kevin Bresnahan replied to JohnS's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Happy 82nd birthday Victor! It's been a long while since we've heard from you. I hope you're doing well. -
What vinyl are you spinning right now??

Bobby Hutcherson - Four Seasons. Nice date. Killer band too - Hutcherson with George Cables, Herbie Lewis & Philly Joe Jones. -
Going To Disney - Orlando
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
So after looking around, the Jazz scene in Orlando is deader than Boston's jazz scene. At least Boston has a couple of clubs that bring in some good shows. Nothing down there that I could find. So I'll go back to Christini's one night but no Jazz in Orlando. Again. -
His obituary has been posted on the funeral home where his services were held: http://www.lovelandfuneralchapel.com/obituary/Mark-Durelle-Combs/La-Grande-Oregon/1774503 Obituary Mark Durelle Combs, 59, of La Grande, passed away on Friday, December 15, 2017 at his residence. A Celebration of Life will be held at Loveland Funeral Chapel on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at 7:00pm. Mark was born December 27, 1957 in Norfolk, Virginia to Carrol and Loretta (Milne) Combs. He resided in Virginia; Hawaii; Bellingham, WA; Ludowici, GA; Sunnyvale, CA; Deridder, LA; Cove, OR and La Grande, OR. Mark graduated from high school in Ludowici, GA and attended college in California. After serving on a submarine in the Navy for about 3 years, Mark used his talents to work with a group that designed GPS units. Upon selling his shares, he was able to open and operate a comic book store in California He then worked at Target and worked at the La Grande Safeway Store for nearly 10 years. Mark had an endless love for his cats. He would often say they were his kids. He loved to draw comics, really enjoyed Jazz, playing guitar. He was an avid pipe smoker and tobacco collector. He had a tobacco collection he estimated would take more than 10 years to smoke. He liked jokes and making all of us laugh was possibly his favorite thing ever. He was very interested in history, loved gardening, loved discussing the science of plants, loved reading and had thousands of books - mainly science fiction, but read a bit of everything. He was into so many different things on so many different subjects. Mark is survived by his half sister, Elizabeth Svanberg of Boca Raton, FL; step brother, Scott Bobarger (Margie) of Elgin, OR; step-mother, Doris Combs of La Grande, OR; Uncle, Donald C. Combs of Ludowici, GA; Uncle Durelle Combs of Ludowici, GA; and Aunt, Patsy West of Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents Carrol and Loretta.

I've got a stack of CDs that I have been meaning to give away for a while now. Some are dupes, others are just stuff that I didn't dig. Let me know if any of these interest you... Lin Halliday - Delayed Exposure (Delmark) with Halliday, Ira Sullivan, Jody Christian, Dennis Carrol & George Fludas. Billy Higgins - Mr. Billy Higgins (Evidence) with Higgins, Gary Bias, William Henderson & Tony Dumas. Pharoah Sanders - Heart Is A Melody (Evidence) with Sanders, William Henderson, John Heard & Idris Muhammad Pharoah Sanders - Moon Child (Timeless) with Sanders, William Henderson, Stafford James, Eddie Moore & Cheikh Tidlane Fale A two-fer: Various - Soundtrack to The Bridges of Madison County & Remembering Madison County. I picked these up because it used to be the only way to get Johnny Hartman's "Once In Every Life" on CD. All of the tracks from that Bee Hive LP are on these 2 CDs. I'll ship these free to anyone in the US but I have to ask that anyone outside the US to pay for the actual shipping cost. I've gotten sticker shock on some of my international CD shipments these past few years.

I was telling Jim on Facebook that I had to laugh at one of the redirect websites I got today. It was an official-looking "Microsoft Support" website with a serious voiceover telling me that my Windows computer has been compromised and I must immediately call their tech support number shown on the screen or I would be disconnected from the network. I was seeing this while using my Linux/Ubuntu laptop.

Charles Earland - Living Black! (Prestige). Green label RVG pressing. Based on the personnel, I was expecting to like this more than I do. Good reviews too. I think what bugs me most is when Earland plays a sustained single tone for far too long. It's gets to be like an audio ear drill. -
I am still getting this on my two Linux machines this morning. Since I've never heard of malware working on a Linux box, I would guess that it's the DNS as well.

Amazon Music Unlimited vs. Spotify
Kevin Bresnahan replied to sonnymax's topic in Miscellaneous Music
A few missing albums or tracks might be "no big deal", but it kinda is when they advertise that they *will* be available if you pay. -

Great music but I was never a fan of the bootleg-quality sound. -
I would really like to be at that Greenfield show but I'm heading down to Orlando, FL early the next day. I hope he adds a few more dates after I get back.

I'm spinning LP2 right now. It's been a while since I pulled this off the shelf. -

I love those Blackhawk recordings for Mobley's contributions. I need to pull this box out again myself. -
Amazon Music Unlimited vs. Spotify

What's even weirder is that if I follow your link to "No Amps Allowed", I see all 15 tracks listed and when I hover over any of these tracks, I get a pop-up message that says, "Go Unlimited to listen to "Track Name". All 15 tracks have this same pop-up message. If I were to buy Amazon Unlimited specifically to hear all of these tracks, I'd be pretty upset at them for lying like that. -
Benito's son Romano was a pretty good pianist. I have his Piano e Forte CD that I picked up from trumpeter Cicci Santucci at one of his local appearances a few years back.

I think they're talking about HD Tracks: http://www.hdtracks.com/stan-getz-with-guest-artist-laurindo-almeida-443352 From what I've heard, the audio quality of these Hi Res downloads is all over the map. It varies from recording to recording. It all comes down to the source and the mastering (as usual).

New Soul Station XRCD Blue Note - out now. Sounds great!

The Blue Note XRCDs were put out by Elusive Disc: http://www.elusivedisc.com/Audio-Wave-Music-Blue-Note-XRCD24/products/1513/ -
I doubt that there is any kind of archive manager these, especially since I've heard that they shipped all of the tapes into an Iron Mountain facility somewhere in CA. I imagine at this point, anyone making an inquiry about tape availability is at the mercy of whoever cataloged these tapes before shipping them off to storage.

Going To Disney - Orlando
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
13 years later, we're going back to Orlando. We'll be there 2/24-3/03/2018. We'll likely be going back to Christini's as I see it's still open. Anyone with some insight into the Jazz scene? -
I think Bloom's strength is her ballad playing. One of my favorite recordings by Bloom is "The Red Quartets" with Fred Hersch on piano, Mark Dresser on bass, and Bobby Previte on drums. Most of the tracks can be found on youtube, including this beautiful ballad:

Teddy Edwards - Nothin' But The Truth! (Prestige). Blue label Van Gelder pressing. It's not my favorite Edwards date but I haven't found a lot of his Prestige dates on vinyl. The CDs are usually in the player for his catalog. -

Miles Davis - My Funny Valentine (Columbia) Two-eye mono again. I must've bought a pile of these somewhere along the line. I'm not usually a mono guy.
