  1. I always liked reading Sandi's stories. Now that the All About Jazz forum is dead, are her little stories gone too? Did anyone ever back them up off of the forum?
  2. I've read that Mark Wilder digitized all of Brubeck's Columbia/Sony catalog and that there were plans to issue all of it in the form of those 5 CD "Original Album Classics" box sets that they started in 2010. The fact that they stopped after 2 boxes would seem to indicate that the money wasn't there. Then when they issued that "The Complete Columbia Studio Albums Collection" box set, I was thinking a "The Complete Columbia Live Albums Collection" was next. I just think the CD market is on its way out.
  3. I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but I used to post there regularly until I got into a major disagreement with Mike Ricci over what I felt was a joke done in very poor taste. His attitude was "If you don't like it, leave". So I left and never went back.
  4. On top of this, this title may be one of the ones where the newer OJC pressing sounds better than the original. I've found a few like that.
  5. I do too but i will add that the S3 version (the last version B&W issued) included the improved Nautilus tweeter and should be the version you get.
  6. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bowers-and-Wilkins-B-W-DM601-S3-Speakers-/112269191414?hash=item1a23c3e8f6:g:gPUAAOSwt5hYenwO Wait until after the auction and offer $350 including shipping?
  7. Depending on the age, old Snells will probably need re-foamed woofers. Worst case, they may need re-foamed *and* new capacitors in the crossover. My friend had some old B&W speakers that improved tremendously when he re-capped them. BTW, that might be what happened to your old Cambridge Soundworks speakers, You can re-foam them too but the grill has to be pried off with a screwdriver. I did it without damaging the speaker but it was tricky.
  8. What a killer band! It's shows like this that make me wish I lived a lot closer to NYC.
  9. Dusty's price on the Mobley was $24.99, which is why I ordered from them instead of CD Japan, who have much higher shipping prices.
  10. I ordered it to hear it in real sound. The cassette I had sounded so poor that I could barely listen to it. While I was at it, I ordered a new (to me) Tubby Hayes CD called "Interlude For Music": https://www.dustygroove.com/item/805241/Tubby-Hayes:Interlude-For-Music-Japanese-paper-sleeve-edition
  11. Is this the same stuff: https://www.dustygroove.com/item/719825? If it is, the samples i listened to sounded a lot better than the old cassette I have. I wonder if I have another date on cassette? Kevin
  12. Single cup of coffee? Why go the Keurig route? Aeropress yourself a cup of real coffee:
  13. I hate it too and it's why I boycott all of them. It's a terrible trend in the audiophile world. On top of that, I picked up most of the Music Matters 33 rpm Blue Note discs and they sound phenomenal so all the talk about the sonic benefits of 45 rpm went out the window. It was really just a way for the sellers to double their profit.
  14. My bet would be that the three TOCJ CDs will sound very similar to the XRCD. The XRCD will beat all the others.

    Yes

Debating the hell out of of the word "timeless" - so fucking lame. In case you didn't notice, the thread is titled "Yes" - as in the rock band Yes. Timeless or not - this debate has nothing to do with the discussion of the band, Sometimes. this group derails honest discussion in the stupidest of ways.

    Yes

I really like a lot of Yes's output. I think Chris Squire's incredible bass work sets this band apart. I hear their hit "Roundabout" with Squire's bass belting out the melody loud & clear and I think, "What other rock band did this?". I'm not a fan of all of their work. Sure, they made some clunkers, but the good ones more than make up for it. BTW, I think it's a disgrace that it took so many years for the Rock & Roll "Hall of Fame" to recognize Yes for induction. It's almost like they got shamed into it when Squire died last year and people finally started realizing how corrupt the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame election process was. They have inducted so many non-Rock bands and artists before classic bands like Deep Purple, Yes and Jethro Tull (still not in). I guess they are waiting until Ian Anderson dies before they decide to induct Tull.
  17. Funded! Congrats!!! Now get to work.
  18. Jim - did you go the "Target" or "Non-target" route with this?
  19. I've never heard of this one. How is it?
  20. While I have enjoyed many of the titles mentioned in this thread and I do play some of them quite a bit (Pepper Adams), I haven't been all that thrilled with the CD masterings I've heard on quite a few of them. I don't know if the masters are lost or if some of these recordings were just badly recorded, but I haven't been able to find a decent version of several titles. Many of them sound muffled while others are overly bright. I think some of the worst reissues were the mini-LP versions I bought from Japan in the early 00's. Stan Levey's "Grand Stan" and Howard McGhee's "The Return of Howard McGhee" sound particularly harsh, especially if you crank them up a bit. Almost painfully sibilant.
  21. In 2001, the Classical Jazz Quartet created an interesting version of The Nutcracker. The Classical Jazz Quartet is Kenny Barron on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Stefon Harris on vibraphone and marimba, and Lewis Nash on drums. Bob Belden was the arranger. Well worth picking up if you're a fan of these songs. You have to get yourself a copy of Scott Hamilton's "Christmas Love Songs". Great "late night" Christmas Jazz. It gets regular play at my house around the holidays. Also, both Milestone and Uptown did nice Christmas compilations that have some nice tunes. Milestone comp is called "Christmas Songs" and the Uptown Records comp is called "An Uptown Christmas".
  22. Well, since Brubeck introduces "Take Five" as a song that "I am sure most of you have heard", the date of this Hollywood Bowl date must be wrong since nobody would have heard in 1958.
  23. Dan, If they're still available, i'd like the Art Blakey and Junior Mance discs. Kevin
  24. When did Blue Note fix the typo on the cover of "The Sidewinder"? There was a time when I thought there were two bassists - one named Bob Cranshaw and another named Bob Crenshaw.
