  1. Cecil Payne - Brookfiled Andante (Spotlite). OK audio for a so-so live date. Lower your expectations and everything's fine. Cecil is in good form. The record sleeve came completely unglued and had to be taped. The guy at the record store said he doesn't tape record covers because "some people complain that I should leave them original". I said, "Oh, so letting the record fall out onto the ground is more original'.
  2. Frank Wess - Frank Wess Quartet (Prestige/Moodsville 8). A new purchase I found in a "New arrivals" bin at a local store for $8.00. AN original RVG pressing too.
  3. They compressed it? Really? Why did they feel the need to compress this to audible levels? Sure, add some compression to bring the bassist out of the murk but don't go so far that it's too loud. That's just dumb and very unfortunate. Did they "flat top" any of it? That would be even dumber.
  4. Apologies to those who live in the area, but I know two people who have recently traveled to Detroit and both said that the homeless in the streets and the crime in their downtown area made them afraid to leave their cars, even in daylight. That said, if you want to be able to buy a beat up house for under $20K, Detroit is your place.
  5. It blows my mind to realize that Jeb Patton is now over 40. I remember seeing him as "a kid" playing with Jimmy Heath back in the 90's. How time flies.
  6. From one of my posts in the Larry Young thread in the New Releases forum: http://www.themasterdiskrecord.com/2014/06/deciding-long-make-side-vinyl-record/ Summary of cutting length trade offs from this article: Here are your guide lines: Under 18 minutes, I could cut almost anything. As loud as wanted up to the groove distorting. Full bass, metal, rock—it’s all good. Between 18-22 minutes, I’m going to depend on a ballad or acoustic song to help with the length. If not, I’ll have to lower the level 2 or 3 db at 22 mins compared to 18 min. From 22-26 minutes, I might have to lower the level more, or roll off a little bass. This depends on the client’s preference for bass/full/warm sounds vs level. Over 25 minutes, it’s very likely—even for jazz—that I’ll have to lower the level, maybe clean up the low bass, and maybe more. I can cut 30 minutes on a side, but the level is down 8db or more from the level I can cut on a 18 minute side. That's a lot. But, the sound is still good (or can be) even though the record noise becomes more apparent since the music is quieter. If pressed at a high-quality plant with careful consideration, a long side can sound really good.
  7. He's from your neck of the woods. From memory, I think he played for tv studios in LA for many years. I had one of his trio cds, on Four Star Records iirc,..capable playing, left me underwhelmed. Just my $.02. Smith plays on two of the dates in Mosaic's Bee Hive box; Brignola's "Baritone Madness" and Salvador's "Star Fingers".
  8. I've yet to find a universal remote that fully duplicates a smart TV's myriad functions. If you're going to use any of the smart TV apps, you might be stuck with the TV remote anyway.
  9. Almost all will exceed 26 minutes if my calculations were correct.
  10. My Dad had a few "Sing Along With Mitch Miller" LPs in the stacks. I did keep a couple of Simon & Garfunkel LPs, although I later replaced them with clean copies. The rest was so scratched, they were basically unlistenable.
  11. My parents offered me their record collection a few years ago. Most were scratched to heck and I didn't even want to hear them.
  12. Given how much music they're going to have to have to stuff onto an LP side to get it all to fit, I would think that this is not one to opt for the vinyl edition. They'll have to roll off the bass to get ~26 minutes to fit on an LP side. See: http://www.themasterdiskrecord.com/2014/06/deciding-long-make-side-vinyl-record/
  13. I don't think Bobby is playing any more.
  14. Not so hard to understand when you realize what most people were using to play them back in the 50's & 60's. I still remember stacking several LPs for playback at my parents' parties. By the time the 4th or 5th LP fell, the playback started back slow as the record slid a bit on the stack below it. We really abused LPs back in the day.
  15. It almost looks like: WILSON LIVE
  16. I've seen Charles Lloyd several times, each time coming away thinking, "Maybe I caught him on an off night". The time I saw him with Billy Higgins on drums was memorable for the fact that it was a band with Billy Higgins.
  17. I wanted to like this one a lot more than I did.
  18. Why didn't they combine "True Blue" and "Silver Blue" onto 1 CD? It would've been less than 79 minutes (78:30 by my calculation) and as we have been noting in another thread, there are 81+ minute CDs being issued these days.
  19. For some reason, I thought it looked like an Atlantic cover but I searched all over and couldn't find it.
  20. Why? Were you using a flash? At all of the shows around here, as long as you don't use a flash or actually record the show, you can take as many pictures as you want.
  21. My family has a whole stack of 3D movies. Some are phenomenal. Some are just OK. And yes, all are much darker than the non-3D version. This wouldn't be true if I were to get a TV that used passive 3D instead of active 3D. Active 3D works on a shutter, which will obviously reduce brightness. If I get another TV, I will try to get one that has passive 3D.
  22. I know that she wanted to show respect to the dearly departed but "my friend" seems a bit of a stretch considering how many times she sued him.
  23. My new Panasonic is a Smart TV. I believe "Smart TV" means that there is a screen full of selectable icons on a screen that allow you to directly link to things like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and You Tube without a computer (as long as you link your Smart TV to a wireless router). On my TV, I have the option of turning the TV on with a "Home screen" filled with these icons or have it simply turn on as a TV (which is what I did). FWIW, I bought my mother a new Smart TV and she doesn't even have an internet connection. I set it up to default to turning on as a TV and she's having no trouble at all. She doesn't have to use them.
  24. Some LGs are supposed to have motion blur, a very annoying fault when watching sports. Since you'll be using it to watch some European football , you'll have to let us know if it works out for you. If you do see motion blur, try turning off all of the motion settings. Also, regarding positive reviews, it depends on where you read the reviews. At some sites, like most manufacturers websites, there is moderation that often blocks negative reviews. And not to scare you too much, but here's a thread for your perusal on the AVS forums (a forum admittedly populated by video lunatics, but worth reading anyway): http://www.avsforum.com/forum/166-lcd-flat-panel-displays/2221762-vizio-m65-uhd-vs-lg-65uf6450-uhd.html Remember, some people only go on line only to bitch, not praise.
  25. Had a blast last night. It was a great show with an incredible drum performance by Marcus Baylor (I think that's who it was - the mics there are not favorable to the spoken word). Unfortunately, said drummer was playing so loudly that the sound guy felt the need to crank everyone else up to pain-inducing levels. You could actually feel the "acoustic" bass thumping your chest. There was an older guy sitting next to me who left early. It was that loud. I went out in the hall for a tune to give my ears a break. My right ear is still complaining shrilly at me today. I am not a fan of loud gigs and there is really no need to do this at Scullers, a club with good acoustics to begin with. The solid wood panels on the walls act like acoustic mirrors, making it pretty loud & bright. A little amplification goes a long way in that space. A note to Kenny Garrett if he reads this - Tell your incredible drummer that he can still play like a maniac without trying to pound the sticks through the drum heads. BTW, I think this was the band I saw. I say "I think" because the pianist was behind a pole. Check out the duet with the drummer starting at around the 21:30 mark. It was even wilder last night (if you can believe it).
