  1. Yeah, and it's an orchestra but it's not either.
  2. I've listened to this twice through now and it just isn't quite my style. It would be great to see live but as a recording, I have trouble seeing all of the connections between the individual players.
  3. Ammons & Stitt - Boss Tenors In Orbit (Verve) Original RVG promo mono(?) pressing. No indication that it's stereo so I guess it's mono. BTW, first tunes played with my newly arrived Mcintosh MX-110 tubed preamp. Sounds pretty good but better? Jury's still out.
  4. Heath's "Picture Of Heath" has been out on CD a couple of times, with the latest being on a Prevue CD issued in 1998.
  5. My answer to this thread is, the whole Bee Hive catalog with the exception of Johnny Hartman's "Once In Every Life", which was issued on two soundtrack CDs for "The Bridges Of Madison County". Great stuff there. I play my needledrop CDs often.
  6. Coleman's "Big George" came out in 1990 on an Affinity CD called "Stablemates". It couples Junior Cook's "Pressure Cooker" (minus the track "The 8th Cat") with the complete "Big George" session. Someone in Germany has a copy on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/CD-Junior-COOK-QUARTET-Stablemates-G-Coleman-Affinity-1990-like-new-AFF-766/160678311955 and someone has a copy for $60 on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Stablemates-Junior-Quartet-Coleman-Affinity/dp/B000LFLGN4
  7. Maybe more like someone on eBay is trying to sell an empty bottle of BB for $55. P.T. Barnum knew what he was talking about.
  8. Next Thursday night (1/24) Scullers in Boston has a band in house that they've billed as "Baritone Madness". 3 bari players on the front line. Sounds like a great night. I wonder if they're going to play the Bee Hive album in it's entirety? It'll be hard to top the pace of "Donna Lee".
  9. Is this any good? Someone has been trying to sell a copy for while but I knew nothing about it.
  10. Oh... clocks... I thought the topic said something else. :D:D
  11. Tor Lundvall - The Shipyard (Dais) Number 24 out of 500 pressed. Dark ambient sounds that is very relaxing for me. Someone posted a few tracks on youtube: <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/y72Z8nCR3jU?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/KiVGgNaR6Tw?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
  12. A real blast from the 1970s to see that cover again ! Issued with special clarity!
  13. I sent some Mr. Priester's way. I'm glad to see that he got in touch with the Jazz Foundation of America too. They are a great organization that was established just for this type of situation.
  14. Last one for the night... Herbie Mann - Great Ideas Of Western Mann (Japanese Riverside)
  15. Just finished: Pat Metheny - Rejoicing (ECM). Side one is nice but side 2... not so much. Now playing: Johnny Griffin - Bush Dance (Galaxy). I've heard better Griff before. Just OK. Indicative of the times, I guess.
  16. Actually, he'll need a specific decoder downstream to handle the copy-protected DSD bitstream. Denon's decoder is called Denon Link and even they had trouble implementing it over the objections of Sony. Sony never wanted SACD streamed. They required players to have analog outputs exclusively for many years. BTW, I never understood the desire to stream DSD anyway. The digital-to-analog conversion has to happen somewhere. Why would the D/A converter be better in a cheapie Denon or Onkyo reveiver than the D/A converter in the player itself?
  17. You can only play SACD through HDMI if your preamp/receiver can properly decode it. The last I knew, there were only a couple of preamps/receivers out there that could do it. Denon was one. Maybe Onkyo was the other?
  18. After JazzWax's Marc Myers wrote that Jordi Pujol "lovefest" interview a while back, I stopped reading anything he wrote.
  19. I just bought tickets to see McCoy at the Regattabar in Febraury and I got to thinking about this thread. Here we are 7 years later and McCoy is still out there touring. I am glad that he got over his health problems.
  20. I have listened to machines that convert to PCM and machines that don't and I haven't been able to hear any lessening of sound quality. Both sounded great. I have to wonder if the "no PCM for SACDs" stance is simply a continuation of the SACD vs. DVD-A debate. The thing is, they both lost.
  21. What I find most strange about the cover is that it appears to be a nude woman & young girl falling from the sky. Considering what happened to Wayne's wife & neice... well, could it be that this is what Wayne was doing here or does he actually not see the connection?
  22. FWIW, I was being ironic. Really? I would never have guessed! On the other hand, I was being very serious. I even started looking around for information on this Dexter Gordon tribute tour to see if they were able to get Eric.
  23. Sometimes you may know a little about it from the word of mouth. Sometime the same players or organization have done them before and you know from past experiences whether it's worthwhile to give a listen. The Blue Note has done many with McCoy and others that I wouldn't go to, for example. All of these factors can give you a idea if the program is going to be worthwhile, or if it's going to be a thrown together set of players picking tunes on stage, playing with little real energy. There's going to be a Dexter Gordon Tribute coming up soon. Dexter's widow and manager Maxine Gordon is fully involved, and the musical director is George Cables. Sounds good. And the role of Dexter will be played by Eric Alexander? One can only hope. He'd do a great job of it. BTW, the chance to hear most of these classic Jazz recordings played live by *anyone* may be a once in a lfetime event for a lot of us "youngsters" (the under 50 crowd). Just because some of you saw Coltrane play "Ascension" live doesn't mean no one else wants to see it and hear it live again today. Ditto for a Dexter Gordon tribute. I've never seen Dexter Gordon live and I never will. He's dead, but his music doen't have to be. My only option to hear Dexter Gordon's music in a live setting is seeing it played by someone alive today who can play it like him.
  24. Yeah, but fwiw, it is expressly ILLEGAL for anyone who obtains promo copies from record labels to sell them for profit. So that puts Dusty Groove on both sides of the fence. On one hand, they finally woke up a few years ago and stopped selling black market Euro releases. On the other hand, they continue to resell promos that they shouldn't have bought in the first place. The courts have ruled that selling promos is NOT illegal. It was a big lawsuit and it went pretty high up the appellate food chain. The court ruled that once a label gives away a disc, it's no longer theirs.
