Newport (RI) Jazz Festival 2023 Lineup Announced
Kevin Bresnahan replied to tranemonk's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I'm not seeing what you're seeing. I see three "old timers" and a whole lot of "who the hell is that" myself. Even the ones I do know, I wouldn't consider what they play "jazz", nor would I want pay "Newport money" to see/hear them, especially since I'd have to add in lodging these days. But then again, most of the "old timers" are gone, so someone has to fill that slot up on stage. This is the future. -
I looked at this sale but I'm going to pass. Their fulfillment system sucks and their customer service is even worse. I'm not ordering something to end up waiting 6 months without getting anything and having every E-mail answered by a bot. I've already cancelled two orders there. Not willing to make it three.

Just finished - Barney Wilen - French Ballads (IDA/Elemental Music). Now playing: Barney Wilen - Talisman (IDA).

"Uniquities Vol. 1 & 2" shipped today. It's 2 CDs. Disc 1 Without A Song All The Things You Are Careful Chelsea Bridge Is What It Is Uniquities Part 1 St. Thomas Disc 2 Without A Song Body And Soul Big Blues In A Sentimental Mood Uniquities Part 2 - St. Thomas I don't know why the second "Uniquities" has "St. Thomas" hyphenated after it. I'll find out when I play it. It's recorded live in Japan in 2012 but in listening to the downloads, the audience is dead silent during the tunes and so far (a few tunes in), they only clap at the conclusion of each tune. Very nicely recorded if not almost too "soft"... but that could just be Jim's setup.

I think they were pretty scarce in those days too.

What live music are you going to see tonight?

Not my video but made very close to my seat. -
I always thought this might make a good Mosaic set but only if they could find the masters and especially if there is any unissued material on them.

I'm playing this CD as I work today and one of the tunes that I always love playing is Wayne's first take at "Tom Thumb". I am so used to hearing it as part of "Schizophrenia" with James Spaulding's alto in there that this quartet version always surprises me when Wayne starts playing the melody.

I am not usually a fan of thread necrophilia, but I am thinking about picking up a CD of Dickerson's "Impressions of a Patch of Blue" from the Verve Elite series. What are the thoughts on this CD? It's going for about $20 right now but I'm on the fence after sampling some tunes on YouTube. Seems rather sleepy.

Not tonight, but tomorrow night - The Cookers at Scullers in Boston. I've caught this band on every swing through the area. This is a "can't miss" event for me. I'm posting a little early because there are still a few seats left to both shows. I'll be right up front for the first set. -
For the original release in Japan in 1966, they clearly tried to capitalize on Shorter's presence:

I wish I was into getting stuff signed back in the days when I saw Mulgrew on a semi-regular basis.

Phil Woods - Bird With Strings... And More! (Storyville)
Kevin Bresnahan replied to EKE BBB's topic in New Releases
Oh - so this is a live date? From what I read in Dusty Groove's blurb about "the mix", I thought it was recorded in a large hall purposefully for release. BTW - Phil's website has a video of this from the same year (2005) recorded at the Marciac Jazz Festival in pretty good sound: https://www.philwoods.com/discography/item/400-phil-woods-bird-with-strings -

Why didn't this get released years ago? It was recorded almost 18 years ago (June, 2005) when Phil was still with us. It might have been nice if he could've made a few extra bucks back then. -
Here's a fun write-up on Ronnie's Steeplechase dates (written in 2018 so it's missing a few of the last ones): https://jazzprofiles.blogspot.com/2018/09/cuberquest-ronnie-cuber-on-steeplechase.html

That was my impression as well. I assume you meant Xanadu or Steeplechase and not Muse though.

From the Mosaic Select box... Curtis Amy & Paul Bryant - The Blues Message (Pacific Jazz). Nice blues here. Unusual in that it has a bassist with an organ player which honestly anchors these blues tunes a bit more. I love a nice walking bass line on a slow blues tune. This would make an excellent Tone Poet LP.

My favorite Strayhorn date is "Cue For Saxophone"

Horace Silver Quintet Live New York, Revisited
Kevin Bresnahan replied to romualdo's topic in Re-issues
All someone has to do is start a label in Switzerland and release a bunch of Beatles or Rolling Stones LPs on "Switzerland PD" CDs and watch how quickly they change those rules. It's never a problem to screw with the "little guys"... not when you mess with the money.- 34 replies

I have learned that because these Ezz-thetics CDs are being issued in Switzerland, which is not part of EU, they fall into some sort of PD black hole. I thought that was only true for Andorra, but apparently not. So these may be PD in Switzerland unless someone can tell us otherwise. This will change quickly if Ezz-thetics decides to start releasing Beatles CDs.- 34 replies

So Steeplechase is going the PD route now too? Although I suppose they could have negotiated with the estate. The thing I wonder about these deals with musicians' estates is if these family members ever consider if these musicians even wanted these sessions released.

I actually didn't keep "The Scene Is Clean". It was a long time ago, so I don't remember why but it definitely wasn't something I would play repeatedly. It's not like I don't have enough of Ronnie's CDs though. I still have 15 other titles.
