  1. Thanks to my Facebook friend Derek Taylor, I learned that Jim Hall's estate is releasing a CD (2 CDs maybe?) featuring Hall, Scott Colley & Joey Baron via Artist Share on March 2, 2023. It is called "Uniquities Vol. 1 + 2". I wish they offered more details on this release (Live? Studio?) but I still ordered the CD(s). Derek's post also pointed out that I missed an earlier Artist Share recording of Hall & Baron called "Conversations" that was released in 2010. It's sold out on CD but still available as a download from Artist Share. I'm not a huge fan of downloads but since the CDs are pricey on the used market, it may be my best option.
  2. Not a fan of Columbia for doing these "bootleg" releases since they're being done strictly to claim the copyright, which they would lose in the EU under their "use it or lose it" copyright rule. I wouldn't be as bothered by it if they were actually doing it to make it available to fans of the music. They clearly are not. They do one limited pressing - just enough to get credited with releasing it - and then let it run out of print. My feeling is that they should "lose it" because then maybe the fans could actually buy it from someone who would keep it in print.
  3. I'd love to help you out but I have most of these already. I've also pretty much given up on audio upgrades as I don't think my hearing can tell much difference these days.
  4. I don't know that cover at all. Is it some new PD release? This is the cover I have:
  5. Lousy bass sound on this one... although typical of that era. Direct bass pickup I assume? Further listening to that web link and I hear that this was recorded when Pharoah was still doing that random screeching stuff, which I find weird. In my experience, this was better live than it is on this recording. It's like he's playing a regular solo and then just loses his shit for second. This is the same label that's been putting out those Onkel Pös Carnegie Hall recordings.
  6. Crosby, Stills & Nash - CSN (AF Gold CD). This was never a favorite of mine but when I'm in the mood for some mellow rock, it fits the bill.
  7. The sheet music and lyrics enter the public domain. The musical recordings are still under copyright for quite a few more years (2049).
  8. The same thing happened to Ronnie Cuber's web page a few years ago. It also happened to Horace Silver's webpage a few months after he died. Once you let your web domain rental expire, it's fair game for anyone to grab it.
  9. I have heard this music in various forms over the years. In fact, I'm pretty sure I owned it on CD at least once. But I found an inexpensive used Japanese CD in my local record store so I thought I'd give it another listen. It's been a while since I've heard it.
  10. I picked up the CD versions. I'm close to being done with vinyl (again).
  11. Yesterday actually... Duke Ellington - Charles Mingus - Max Roach - Money Jungle Abdullah Ibrahim - Water From An Ancient Well
  12. It is very good stuff. I'm glad I picked it up as well.
  13. Through Facebook, I was able to contact Jay Migliori's niece, Sheri Campbell and she is going to ask her Aunt Patti to see if she knows anything about this.
  14. This is not a new thing. There have been several hot cuts that have given quite a few turntables trouble during playback. The only difference is that this time Blue Note actually admitted it but they made it quite clear it's the buyer's problem, not theirs. It's why I stopped buying Blue Note's new LPs before others report on the audio. I am not dropping another $28 (Classic Vinyl) or $39 (Tone Poet) on a record that won't play on my turntable.
  15. One of the latest Tone Poet releases was Chet Baker & Art Pepper's "Picture of Heath", from the Pacific Jazz catalog. A lot of people are having difficulties playing side 2 due to it being cut very hot. Sound familiar? There were enough complaints that Blue Note felt that they had to respond. They posted this to their Facebook page: “We’re aware of the complaints about the Tone Poet Vinyl Edition of Chet Baker & Art Pepper “Picture of Heath” from some customers who are experiencing skipping on side two, while for most it plays fine. We’ve looked into it and have determined there is no defect with the pressing. It is however a very dynamic recording and Joe Harley & Kevin Gray don’t use any limiting or compression in their mastering approach. That can expose the need for some adjustments to be made with particular turntable set-ups. For instance, we’ve found that customers who adjusted their tracking force and anti-skate (even slightly reducing both), and made sure their turntable is level, no longer had playback issues. We hope this helps!” So basically, if you have problems playing this... Blue Note doesn't care. Why should they care if you have played thousands of records fine? If you can't play this record, it's your fault, not theirs. That's really great news for those customers who can't play it. I'm glad I bought the Pure Pleasure LP of this title a few years ago.
  16. If you have Prime, you can order it today and get it delivered Saturday. That's what I just did.
  17. I just ordered a CD of Jeff Hamilton's "Merry & Bright" after hearing a tune on Sirius/XM's Jazz channel the other day during Marcus Miller's "Miller Time" program.
  18. I have a Raspberry Pi music player that I output to my Marantz integrated amp using USB. It sounds really good too. It's extremely easy to playback my digitized music library now.
  19. Sonny Criss - This Is Criss! (Prestige) A green label Van Gelder pressing that sounds really good. Such a fine date with a killer rhythm section - Walter Davis, Paul Chambers & Alan Dawson. Criss should have been bigger. I always assumed it was because he stayed on the West Coast. I just realized that this particular release is not in the discogs database. From what I read at the London Jazz Collector's page, these green label Prestige LPs came out ~1972 and are not very highly though of. I admit that the vinyl is pretty flimsy but as I said, this particular cut sounds fine to me. Maybe I got lucky?
  20. Andrew Hill - Dance With Death (Blue Note LT-1030). This sounds fine to me. No need to get the upcoming Tone Poet of this one... well, I suppose the cover is nicer.
  21. You know you've been buying too much new music when you find sealed records in your shelves that you don't even remember buying. Now playing one of them... The Jazz Couriers - In Concert (Tempo/TAP 22). Ronnie Scott, Tubby Hayes, Terry Shannon, Phil Bates & Bill Eyden live at the Dominion Theatre in London Feb. 16, 1958. So of course as I'm playing this brand new record for the first time, I hear this loud popping. I find a small scratch on Side 1. Very noticeable visually so I don't how their QC team missed it. Oh well, it's not like I can send it back for a replacement.
  22. Not rock but not really all blues & certainly not Jazz or Classical. Disc 1 of "The Mercury Blues 'N' Rhythm Story 1945-55".
  23. For some reason, I thought that Alex Sipiagin was leading the Mingus Big Band. It probably doesn't matter as it is more of an ensemble than anything.
  24. So this morning on my drive into work, Sirius/XM's Jazz channel was playing a "Let it Snow" by a vocalist I had not heard of, Sarah Partridge. As I listened, I thought it must be an older recording with Horace Silver on piano. I was pretty surprised when I got into work and saw that it was just recorded in 2022 with Allan Farnham on piano. It available to listen on bandcamp: https://sarahpartridge.bandcamp.com/track/let-it-snow Tell me that doesn't sound like Horace! BTW - why do some artists refuse to identify their backing band? I had to Google this recording for quite a while before I found something that listed the band members and now I can't even find where that was again. So I think the pianist is Allan Farnham. I found the only listing of the band! It was in one of Partridge's Facebook posts referencing a Jersey Jazz Review.
  25. My order is in. I can see it when I log into my account. But I never did receive an e-mail confirmation. Maybe because I used a credit card and they don't charge your card until it ships?
