Always been a favorite of mine and I agree that the audio on the Collectables two-fer isn't the greatest. I always attributed it to the Atlantic fire that destroyed the masters but since there have been several other Atlantic titles reissued on CD with decent sound, maybe it was just a bad tape given to Collectables? There was a Japanese CD issued in 2012 but I did not pick it up.

Thomas M. Bresnahan - RIP
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yesterday I was installing a bike hanger in my garage. I needed to drive the screws deep into a stud. I used my cordless drill and stripped a Philips-head screw. Then I stripped another one. Even using variable speed, the damn thing kept stripping screws. After 3 or 4, I dug through a bunch of old screws in one of my dad's coffee cans full of screws and found 2 flat head wood screws. Big suckers. Then I went to the bottom of my toolbox and pulled out this monster flat head screwdriver that my dad gave me years ago. A little grunting and voila, installed. Thanks dad. -
It's the Post-Pandemic Covid Poll!
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Of course it was! Look at the statistics after the vaccine was introduced. A large percentage of those dying after the vaccine came out were un-vaccinated idiots. And yes, they are the real idiots, not those of us who use the term "anti-vaxxer". Why are they idiots? Because the vaccine could have saved their lives. In case you don't want to read that story, the key point is this, "We estimated that vaccinations prevented 14·4 million (95% credible interval [Crl] 13·7–15·9) deaths from COVID-19 in 185 countries and territories between Dec 8, 2020, and Dec 8, 2021". BTW, what makes an anti-vaccine stance even more idiotic, at least here is the US, is that is became a political stance of the far right, resulting in a lot more deaths in that group of Americans. These people were proud to take their medical advice from Tucker Carlson instead of their doctors and quite a few of them died for it. -
Miles Davis: First Nine Albums On Prestige

This is how I have most of this material too, but when I ripped them to my hard drive, I separated them into their respective LPs. -
I have this CD with a different title and cover. I must have a Japanese version?

Back in 1989, Richard Dreyfuss made a movie called "Let It Ride". I always liked this movie. I was just reminded that Robbie Coltrane had a bit part as the window teller at the race track. He was good even in that small role.

Actor Robbie Coltrane has died at the age of 72. My family are huge fans of the Harry Potter books & movies. Coltrane's portrayal of Hagrid was one of the best in those movies. Coltrane's birth name was Anthony McMillan. He chose Coltrane for a stage name as an homage to John Coltrane.

I have always been a fan of "Walkin'", particularly the sextet tunes with JJ & Lucky. -

So what? It's the antivaxxers that latch onto this as some sort of "victory" in their fight against the vaccination. The vaccine helps prevent you from dying. That's enough for me. BTW, https://www.sorryantivaxxer.com/ is a better website to find out about what happens when you don't get vaccinated than The Epoch Times. -
I picked this up when it came out. Chase has been teaching at Berklee for a long time and used to play pretty frequently in the Boston area before Covid. I haven't seen him on a club schedule in a while.

Lee Konitz - Motion 3 CD set Verve Elite Edition
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Ken Dryden's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I actually sold this 3 CD set a long time ago. I found myself playing the released stuff and stopping when I got to the bonus material. I wasn't much of a fan of the extra tracks without Elvin Jones, especially the partial tracks at the beginning of disc 2. -
That one post is enough for me. Too many of those posters ignore problems with these Tone Poet LPs so that one negative means more to me than the many posters praising it. I'll watch for more posts on this but for now, I'll continue to enjoy the CD.

What vinyl are you spinning right now??
Kevin Bresnahan replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I was going to buy this but my local stores seem to have all sold out rather quickly. -
Someone on Facebook reminded me of this relatively new CD (2010) with some great Cuber solos on it from Steve Gadd: The recently departed Joey DeFrancesco adds to the fun.

I had Kenny Burrell's "Kenny Burrell", one of the latest Tone Poet LPs, in my hands at Bull Moose Music store in Portsmouth over the weekend and decided to hold off since I hadn't read any reviews of this newest pressing. Glad I did - people are reporting distortion on Side 2. They didn't get me this time.

I really miss seeing Harry Allen once a year at Jocko's in Methuen. I bought this one from him during one of his swings through town... Such a beautiful ballad date. Perfect for this rainy holiday afternoon. I do have to get this entered into discogs one of these days.

Such a great player... I loved it when he came to Boston. I think the last time I saw him live was recorded and released as "Straight Street". I was lucky to catch the Mingus Big Band at the Time Cafe when Ronnie was in the band too, RIP Ronnie. Thanks for the great memories. BTW - the George Benson Columbia compilation, "The Essence of George Benson", has a lot of great Cuber playing on it. Probably the best compilation I ever bought (thanks Rob).

Charles Lloyd - Oceans (Blue Note). A second LP of 3 Lloyd trio recordings with him noodling away. These are pleasant if rather lifeless records. I can see playing these at dinner time or if I'm having trouble sleeping. I wonder if Lloyd still thinks he's making records for ECM? -
Does this work? https://cloudconvert.com/mp4-to-wav

If you want to back it up on a CD-R, just burn it to a CD-R as an mp4 file. You can burn any data file to a CD-R. It doesn't have to be an audio file.

Looking for an Album - Gary Smulyan?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Discography
The audio is particularly bad on this YouTube upload, but you can get an idea of the string arrangements. I'd also add that this is far from my favorite Smulyan on CD. In fact, I don't even know if I have it anymore. -
I can see not knowing Nakamura, as he is a relative newcomer, but both Kikoski and Allen have been on a lot of recording dates over the years. Allen has toured as a leader quite a bit too. This does sound intriguing.

Looking for an Album - Gary Smulyan?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Discography
This sounds a lot like your anti-Eric Alexander stance. Can no modern player emulate any older player and gain your "approval"? There are so many classic players that as time goes on, any new player almost has to sound close to someone else from history. I like listening to and seeing Smulyan because he's alive, putting out new CDs and playing at clubs. Pepper Adams died in 1986. If I want to hear someone play in that style, Smulyan is a great choice. I've seen Smulyan live many times over the years and he puts on a great performance. If he's comes through the area again, I'll be there again.
