I'm really thankful that I didn't lose my sense of taste. Several of my friends lost their sense of taste for a few days or even weeks. The wife of one of my coworkers hasn't been able to taste anything for almost a year. I would have a very useless wine cellar if that had happened to me.

I am much better now. I was really sick for a short time... maybe a day and a half? Then I had (have?) a nagging cough. The cough was from a cold I got about 3 weeks before COVID, so I don't think it's been made any worse because of it. I'm very glad I got vaccinated because I would've hated for that day & a half to stretch out longer.

Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix. Having Mickey Haller cruise down the road with "The Sidewinder" playing is pretty cool.

I saw Wayne Shorter live a few times. At at least one concert, he played the soprano exclusively. I think it was the tour for Herbie & Wayne's duo CD "1 + 1". Truth be told, it wasn't that great of a show. The two of them just sorta noodled the night away.

If you like Chanbers' arco bass solos... not my favorite.

It took for me to get this Tone Poet LP to realize that there is a ton of reverb added to the horns on this date. I don't think it's a good thing. It's too bad that there isn't a master tape of this session "dry" before RVG added all that reverb, because I'd love to hear it.

Jim Alfredson's Dirty Fingers - A Tribute To Big John Patton (Big O Records). Excellent CD. No offense to the organissimo dates, I really like this date by Jim.

The last time I saw George, he was still "Big George". Man, he looks so frail up there. But then again, my mom is 85 and she can barely walk, never mind play a saxophone, so George is doing something right. Joe Farnsworth is a damn fine drummer.

I actually pulled it out because it has Gary Bartz on it and I've read on Facebook that Gary has had to cancel a few appearances due to his health, so I wanted to spin something of his. I should've spun his live date from Birdland, "There Goes The Neighborhood", which is smokin'.

Next up, Lawrence Brown's All-Stars with Johnny Hodges - Inspired Abandon (Impulse!). A nice stereo original I found at Stereo Jack's a few years ago. I hear a record like this and all I can think is that this is one of Duke's guys trying to make a few bucks on his own but it's still an Ellington record. Funny, but I saw this "Inspired Abandon" as I was filing Donald Brown's "Sources of Inspiration" a rather fitting progression.

Donald Brown - Sources of Inspiration (Muse). With this band, I thought I'd like this more. It's not inspiring me to spin it again.

Not Jazz... not classical... not quite rock... I guess it belongs here though: Jim Alfredson - In Memorandom (Big O Records). I listen to this pretty regularly while working. I keep hoping that Jim puts the long-awaited sequel to this date. I do like it a lot.

Lee Morgan - Search For The New Land. One of my few (only?) DMM LPs. I am not generally a fan of these pressings, as they generally sound too bright to me. This LP is no different. Very bright or maybe a better way to put it - very little bass and too much midrange. I never did pick this up when Music Matters put it out. I should have. This is a great session. Probably my favorite Lee Morgan date.

James Clay & David 'Fathead' Newman - The Sound Of The Wide Open Spaces!!!! (Riverside/OJC). Great rhythm section, Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones & Art Taylor. that rarely recorded together. I think their only other recording is Byrd's "Off To The Races". Is that Clay who keeps having reed problems? You would've thought after the first one or two, he would've gotten that straightened out.

But this is the first time I've seen it on YouTube. I don't generally buy every music DVD ever made.

Andre .Jaume / Barry Altschul / Barre Phillips – Giacobazzi "Autour De La Rade" (CELP). This is an unusual CD. It's really mellow, but it's avant garde mellow, if you know what I mean. There's a lot of dirge-like tunes but on a couple of tracks, Jaume burns it up. My favorite of the "burners" is "L'Arsenal", the closing piece of the "Point de Vue" suite. It's a tour de force for Jaume.

Art Pepper - Meets The Rhythm Section (Craft). Mono Record Store Day pressing. This sounds very nice. I wasn't expecting it to sound this good. I am not usually a mono fetishist, so I was thinking I might be a bit disappointed.

Have you tried different methods of connection to see if you get more sound out at lower volumes? You can switch between USB and the line out and see if one works better than another.

Ben Allison - Moments Inside

Ben Allison - Moments Inside (Sonic Camera Records). Nice mellow date.

I just got in Ben Allison's latest release, a vinyl LP of "Moments Inside". It arrived in an LP shipper with a large red FRAGILE sticker on it. It also arrived looking like it got ran over by a postal truck. Surprisingly, the LP only suffered a slight corner ding and another corner is slightly bent, but c'mon USPS, you can do better than this.

I've read all the books and watched all the shows. The books are better but the show is very good. Connelly even included a Jazz compilation CD in the first editions of the Bosch novel, "Dark Sacred Night".
