What live music are you going to see tonight?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
So Kenny Barron last night was wonderful. He is still playing great at 78. My only complaint would be that the club I went to is new and they don't seem to have the hang of how to mix the sound for a piano trio or they didn't design the sound system right. We sat in front of the stage and could barely hear Kenny's piano if the trio was playing. I got up at one point and walked back into the club and after about two rows of tables, Kenny was clear as a bell. I think the stage speakers are too high up. They have to be 15-20 feet up. -
Miles Davis Radio coming to Sirius-XM
Kevin Bresnahan replied to felser's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
I drive one hour each way to work every weekday, so I get those 2 hours of listening almost daily. It's why I got Sirius/XM in the first place. BTW - Christian McBride also hosts one of Real Jazz's regular show called The Low Down - an obvious pun on his bass playing abilities. -

I used to like the Sirius/XM channel called Coffee House. I used to enjoy seeing acoustic folk/rock bands at a coffee house in Cambridge,MA called Passim. I saw quite a few great shows there and this channel captured that vibe. Then they started moving more and more into straight acoustic pop and I eventually gave up on it. -
It is a good one. It's too bad that it sold so poorly here in the US that they eventually stopped releasing his recordings here.

Miles Davis Radio coming to Sirius-XM
Kevin Bresnahan replied to felser's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
I like Sirius/XM for what it is - Satellite Radio. I've been at the mercy of DJs my whole life and I don't hate them for that. In fact, they've managed to turn me on to some music I never would have heard otherwise. As it is, I've bought quite a few LPs/CDs after hearing a tune on Sirius/XM's Jazz Radio. If I want to hear specific tunes, I have most of my libraries on USB sticks in the glove box. I also have the Amazon app I can play. It's fun sometimes to say, "Alexa, play some Hank Mobley". -
Miles Davis Radio coming to Sirius-XM

I entered the Twilight Zone this morning. I posted my complaint about Miles Davis Radio taking over Real Jazz, jumped into my car to find that they had (accidentally I assume) shut off my radio. I was able to use the app to listen on my ride in and I will re-flash the radio later today but talk about timing... -
Miles Davis Radio coming to Sirius-XM

I listen to both Classic Vinyl and Real Jazz in my car... almost equally. I do know that the pop-up rock tribute shows typically show up on Deep Tracks. I tune it in whenever some big name rock artist dies because I know it'll be there. Rush Radio was awesome BTW. There is no Deep Tracks channel for jazz. There is one jazz channel. But there are 8 country channels, 2 gospel channels & 2 Smooth/New Age channels. They choose to use the only Jazz channel for Miles Davis Radio when they take over Seriously Sinatra (Channel 70) every summer for Yacht Rock Radio? Why not have Miles Davis Radio on channel 70? -
I'm seeing Kenny live in 2 days. It'll be my first time attending Jimmy's Jazz & Blues Club in Portsmouth, NH.

Why the hell does it have to take over the ONLY Jazz channel they have?? These "takeover" stations typically take over the lesser listened to channels. This is the equivalent of making Classic Vinyl be the Led Zeppelin Channel for a week. -
That's not out yet, is it? Michael's webpage says that it will be released on Feb. 18th.

It does seem rather fitting that we've kept Phil Schaap's RIP thread going for 5 months. ...And I use that smiley because I believe he would've gotten a chuckle out of it too.

Mosaics at my local vinyl shop
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sadly, most of the local used record stores near me put nearly all of their Mosaic boxes up on eBay. I can't remember the last time I found a large used Mosaic box on a store shelf. -

It's on Bandcamp right now. I found it when searching to see if there was something to buy for Bandcamp Friday, when all of the profits go to the artists. I thought it was funny as hell. BTW - the music is actually pretty good. Pianist Milton Keanes is really Sabbath's current keyboard player, Adam Wakeman... oh, hey... wow. He's Rick Wakeman's son. Did not know about him at all.

Is this a modern day version of Buck Hammer? The back cover tells the "story":

The Side Door is an Inn too? Maybe that is something my wife might be up for. Are there any art museums nearby that we could check out the next day before heading back to Maine? We do love art museums.

Damn - I was hoping to get to see them one more time. They were fun to see/hear live. But then again, Lake is 79, Workman is 84 & Cyrille is 82, so it shouldn't be too much of a surprise.

Chiefs/Bengals game question
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I would never bet on a game in today's NFL. The referring is horrible and there have been far too many games where their bad calls have dramatically changed outcomes. It makes the NFL a much more random thing than it should be. The only sport where this is worse is basketball, where fouls are often called based on the name & number on the back of the jersey rather than any actual violation. -
Those RVG CDs have some of Rudy's best work in that series. They sound very good.

I had an E-mail conversation with Joe Harley, who is the producer of the Tone Poet series for Blue Note, and he assured me that these LPs are not limited in any way. There have been massive delays at the pressing plants though, so many titles appear to be going out of print. Just be patient and they will come back into stock.

I don't think that is around the Hackensack studio. Not enough trees around there:

Chiefs/Bengals game question
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The Bills should have pooched the kick off. They would've run time off of those 13 seconds that way. By kicking it through the endzone, no time went off the clock. To compound that mistake, they played soft on D and allowed two throws in front of them. Yeah, you want to protect from a long throw/TD, but you don't have to give up 20 & 22 yard passes to do that. As for the Chiefs yesterday, the main question is what was Andy Reid doing at the end of the first half? You take the points there. That was really stupid.
