  1. In my experience, there were very few OJC LPs that failed to make it to CD. As Colin mentioned, some only showed up on a 2 LPs on 1 CD compilation, but most all of them came out one way or the other.
  2. The Verve Elite Edition CD of Lawrence's "Slide Trombone" is very good. https://www.discogs.com/release/3651984-Lawrence-Brown-Slide-Trombone
  3. I like this one quite a bit.
  4. For many buyers, it's just a collectable. Some of the buyers won't even open it up to give it a spin. It'll just sit on their shelf waiting to appreciate in value.
  5. Ethiopian Mocha Sidama coffee from a small coffee roaster in Salem, NH called Coffee Coffee. Smooth cup 'o joe.
  6. I get that "Patterns" was included in one of those ridiculously-priced Blue Note boxes, but that box is long out of print so they are not affecting that box set's market. Blue Note should not be protecting an LP's re-sale value. They should reissue it.
  7. Plus, AP uses Kevin Gray, who mastering style sounds better to my ears than Bernie Grundman's. I'll stick to my CD versions.
  8. I heard on the news that he had been dealing with a rare genetic muscle disorder called Type II Myotonic Dystrophy, a kind of muscular dystrophy, for a long time. Apparently, people often have it and don't realize it until they are older as the early symptoms like muscle weakness, shortness of breath, difficulty with stairs etc. are often attributed to just "getting old".
  9. https://variety.com/2022/film/news/gilbert-gottfried-dead-dies-comedian-aladdin-1235231387/ Gilbert was funny as hell. He was unafraid to tell the hard jokes. He could be disgusting. He could be nasty. But man, am I going to miss him. One of the best "groan laugh" comedians ever. All 3 gone in the past 7 months... And Louie Anderson too... The comedy world has taken some big hits in this past year.
  10. If you really like Tubby's work, you should try to find that old Columbia CD. It has 4 extra tracks that are not in the Fontana box. They add almost an extra LP (~29 minutes) of music to this session and this Columbia CD sounds pretty good. Not great, but good enough. The extra tunes: Soho Soul 8:02 The Simple Waltz 8:57 Half A Sawbuck 7:13 You're My Everything 5:06 Only 2 of these tracks, "Half A Sawbuck" & "You're My Everything" have showed up elsewhere. They were on the Columbia LP issued coincidentally with the CD and a recent PD LP from WaxTime.
  11. After looking through my LP & CD racks, I decided to go with these 10. I had 25 listed but I didn't want to spend that much right now. 5185 Lytle, Johnny Fast Hands w/ Houston Person, Mickey Tucker, etc. 5197 Schnitter, David Thundering w/ Kenny Barron, Billy Hart, Cecil McBee, etc. 5234 Newman, David "Fathead" Resurgence w/ Marcus Belgrave, Cedar Walton, etc. 5249 Tate, Buddy Hard Blowin' w/ Ray Bryant, George Duvivier, Alan Dawson 5256 Dailey, Albert Textures w/ Rufus Reid, Eddie Gladden, Arthur Rhames 5270 Cole, Richie Alive! 12. As long as you're OK with mono as that is what Elusive Disc is reporting for this new release. I know it's a bit sacrilegious, but this has never been a favorite of mine.
  13. I bought that CD a long long time ago and have enjoyed it ever since. I watched the live show listings for decades to see if Leitch would ever make his way through the Boston area. He never did (that I am aware of).
  14. Belden once told me that "Black Dahlia" was meant to be heard in surround sound. He spent many hours on those mixes. He was really getting into surround sound right before he died. He saw it as a great way to get his music into the hands of people who would otherwise never listen to it.
  15. I just got an E-mail from Tommy's Jazz offering Muse & Landmark LPs. I have a few of these already but I was wondering of there might be some in here that are "must have" recordings that I might have missed. Anyone want to chime in? 16. It looks like he's a writer for Wired magazine: https://www.c-span.org/video/?513056-5/washington-journal-gilad-edelman-discusses-section-230-communications-decency-act
  17. Back in the late 80's, I got to know a jazz record collector who worked at a record store in Northampton, MA. He had a huge collection that included a bunch of rare Blue Notes. He told me that he had never seen an original of "True Blue".
  18. Jackie McLean - Hipnosis (Blue Note). The Moncur session. I needle-dropped this to mp3 years ago so I could listen at work on my PC. I hear this and can't help but wonder why it didn't come out when it was recorded. About the only thing I can think is that the cymbal sound is not quite right in spots. Really "phase-y" sounding, even on the Mosaic Select CD.
  19. Looks like a nice player. Half price is a good deal. Back when I did audio comparisons, I never really heard CD player differences. I heard mastering differences from CD to CD, but I can't remember a player making a certain CD sound good in one player and worse in another. I did use certain CDs to compare speakers though. I would just recommend using some favorites and see how they sound. You should have a few CDs that you know every note - for me it would CDs like "Kind of Blue", "Blue Train" or "Soul Station". I would use something like this.
  20. I picked up a Toshiba pressing from Stereo Jack's many years ago. Great session. The slow blues tune, "Phil T. McNasty's Blues" is my favorite track.
  21. My favorite Transition date is the Doug Watkins.
  22. Joe Harley knows that the master tape for "The Jody Grind" is a needle drop. I discussed it at length with him and Michael Cuscuna via E-mail. However, he did not say that this would preclude it from being reissued on LP, just that it might not be good enough for a Tone Poet (premium) reissue. The Japanese CD reissue program has released 2 alternate takes of "Blue Train" and one of "Lazy Bird" but they only clock in at ~25 minutes. Maybe they will release these on a 2nd LP?
  23. I was in a small produce market in Kittery, ME over the weekend and they were playing "Cousin Mary" from "Giant Steps" over the speaker system throughout the store.
  24. I've lost track of how many musicians have said that to me. In a few cases, it was close to the truth though.
  25. Well, after 6 days of negative tests, I assume I avoided it again. Hopefully this run will continue.
