  1. Don Pullen select, all new to me and its a corker!
  2. In 2 weeks I am off to Morocco, so I expect I will see a band with bellydancers! Aint life grand? Seriously Africa if you like Kaleidoscope perhaps you should check out the catalogue of the Turkish label Kalan ( they are on the web) who have an embarassment of riches, both traditional and Turkish fusion, I picked up about a dozen albums around new year and I shall soon go back for more. Taxim!
  3. And Plant said that Kaleidoscope was his ideal band many moons ago in a Zigzag article! Loved all the belly dancers and flamenco dancers...Now how would Dazed and Confused come across with several shimmering dusky beauties rolling their midrifts? Might have even made me a fan (or perhaps not...)
  4. Africa, you could be right about the chronolgy...I heard that his then girlfriend was a witch hence the dark stuff to which you allude. I have heard that the guy who was brought in to keep Skip in line at the time of 20 Granite Creek was his dealer, and it was thus best to have him on hand. In a recent Mojo about psychedelia Robert Plant recalls meeting Skip once and that he was a real sweet guy despite his health problems. Also interesting to see that Oar has now been elevated to the pantheon of the greatest psych albums ever! (and good to see that Loves Forever Changes is listed as number two after Electric Ladyland, I would have put it at number one!)
  5. Thanks Africa. Yes apparently Skippy attacked the other members of the Grape with a fire axe in the studio, jumped on his bike and drove off to record Oar.

    Time

Bertrand, no the album merely lists recording dates as february 11 and 12 1960. No indication of which sides were recorded on each of these 2 days. I have found my copy of Showboat and as expected there are no alternates
  7. Up for information and appreciation (?) of the Rascals albums

    Time

Bertrand , you are correct on both counts! The Kenny Dorham does include the bonus Sign Off, and the Sonny Clark does not include the alternate of Minor Meeting!

Hope this helps.
  10. Africa, I ve had Skippys Oar in several different editions down the years, I bought it new and mint on import shortly after its release and following a wonderful review in Rollin Stone. Sad that hes gone, favourite stories of Skip include the one where he awoke in the morgue following an o.d! Better is the one when having been commited to a psychiatric institution he dissapeared and was discovered days later in the womens ward! Think Ill spin it this evening.
  11. Anybody know the 2 Rascals albums that Sundazed has? Joe FarrelL Alice Coltrane, Pepper Adams and Ron Carter are involved. Colour me curious yellow.
  12. Thanks Chalupa, your annoucement had me bright eyed and bushy tailed with joy, shame it didnt last long....lets keep our fingers crossed!
  13. Yes Africa, I suppose chaos theory might be able to explain why we all seem to have so much of our collections in common. I mean we are not even tangentally talking about jazz here, right? I mean what are the chances of finding someone else who digs Skippy, or even the Rounders or Millenium? I sure do feel at home here!
  14. Shame that Sweden seems to be missing, so if you would just parcel up that Count Basie studio Roulette box that is gathering dust....
  15. This one is next on my list too, next month?
  16. Chalupa, whats a podcast?
  17. Both just reissued in Europe.
  18. ...tho I think I will avoid the Gandalf recomendation, ( already have the Cosmic Sounds) in order to avoid the senario of the missus catching me back to back with a hot hippie chick ( sigh)
  19. Clem, Wendy and Bonnie is in my local store waiting for me even as we speak. And of course Skip Spence is one of the best albums ever made, in any genre, period! And yeah the Artex( still waiting for vol 4, Wheres my daddy and a Band called Markley though) USA, Beau brummels, HMS Bounty et al , they are all sitting upstairs on my shelves....sometimes seems like our tastes coincide ne ce pas?

    Joe Maini

Thanks for the link Brownie, really nice site.
  21. O.K. Brandon, you win! a fine case of one-up-manship! It was never even released on vinyl in the UK. I know it came out in the Netherlands. My copy was a US import....Perhaps its time to score a copy of the Sundazed Version with all the Ballroom stuff? My copy on cd is a Japanese issue...
  22. Yep, and some were bussed in from Windsor.
  23. Bev, they live in Saxe Coburg.
  24. Africa, are you a closet Curt Boettcher fan? I am! Yes, I have the 4 Howard Robert records, fine stuff.
  25. tonym, perhaps its not too late to save your sorry ass! Not if enough of us remember M De Sade advice to his countrymen `One more effort Frenchmen if you would be republicans! ´ I had completely forgotten the origins of the lurgy and thank you profoundly for your erudite contributions!
