If you do vinyl, you can look for the French series of double lps that cover the Columbia 1930s sides in complete chronological form - both small units and full band. I've not researched if they are truly complete, but the bulk of the recordings should be there. Every so often I see them on offer at reasonable prices - check Cadence or Euclid. There are no liner notes but they have complete discographical details. The sonics aren't necessarily the best, but they are acceptable, at least to my ears. I love that period of Ellington - they are definitely worth having.
-
I have found Duke Ellington - A Listener's Guide by Eddie Lambert to be an invaluable guide in exploring Ellington's music. the 1947-1952 box set was issued as a cd box in France (4 cds I think - they left out the Liberian Suite as I remember). I have the vinyls so I have never bought a copy but I see them turn up on Ebay from time to time and they don't seem to draw many bids. I'm rather fond of that period. Some of the vocal numbers are, shall we say, an acquired taste, but the bulk of this box is prime Ellington.

I bought one of these last summer and I've been pleased with it. I use it sometimes to record myself in practice (acoustic bass) but I use it primarily to record myself on gigs. It makes remarkably good recordings even in rather noisy nightclubs. I replaced the miniature tripod with a full size camera tripod which works well in most situations. My experience has been that it records best at about waist height - putting it near the floor on the mini-tripod seems to drown the recordings in bass notes.

I really like Lunarcy with Pete Christlieb. If you do vinyl, find a copy of "The Kid's Got Ears" on Jazzizz label - great solo version of "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" and some nice trio material. If you dig vocalists, check out his album with Pinky Winters - "Happy Madness".
-
You're right, of course, how did I miss that? Stardust set is missing "Harmony in Harlem" and a version of "If Dreams Come True".
-
I have the 2-cd set above but it is on Stardust label. It is a straight re-release of 2 lps on Jazz Archives Label (JA-12 and JA-13). There are 22 tracks on this release. According to DESOR, the following remain: 4/29/38 1 title, 5/5/38 1 title, 5/8/38 titles, 5/22/38 7 titles. Most of these are on the Jazz Panorama LP JP-14. I don't know if they are available on cd. There are also 6 titles listed as unreleased. I too have long anticipated the Storyville release. I would order a copy the minute it bacame available.

Coates lives in the Delaware Water Gap, PA area and is still active. I saw him perform a couple of years ago at one of the annual COTA (Celebration of the Arts) festivals which are held there every September. He gave a marvelous solo performance, mature and powerful and beautiful.

Kevin, I'll try to get over to my friend's house soon and copy some details. I remember they claimed the whole first disc was newly issued, taken from 3 hours of tapes found in Ben Webster's estate. It seems they have access to his stock of tapes. I do remember that, according to the booklet, the session with Rowles is newly discovered. Storyville had sent a small batch of cds for review in addition to the box. The only Warne Marsh was the date with Kenny Drew, previously titled "I've Got a Good One for You". I don't recall what the other titles were, but everything was a rerelease. I regret the absence of the Ellington Cotton Club material. Although I have this on vinyl, I have long looked forward to a complete issue on cd. Likewise the absense of stockpile material. It's a shame that their access to that material is going to waste.

I got to look at a review copy of the Webster box. According to the notes in the booklet, part of the material has not been released before. Some of it is from Webster's private tapes. I got to hear the first disc, which the booklet says is previously unreleased material from the Montmartre. The music was excellent, in pretty good sound. I can't remember all the things on the 8 discs, but I recognize some of the things from private recordings I have traded for. Most of it seems to be extracted from various broadcasts in Europe. The last disc has the "No Fool, No Fun" session which I think was released on vinyl (Spotlite label, perhaps) and then a studio session with Jimmy Rowles that was supposed to be background music for a commercial (I don't remember the details). The book is nicely produced, very handsome with a lot of nice photos. I read over the session notes and I thought they were very well informed and well done but I am by no means an expert on Webster. Among other things in the booklet there is a nice essay by NHOP about working with Webster which I really enjoyed. Again, I only got to spend an hour or so with the set, but my impression was good enough that I will buy this at some point, since I own almost none of this material.

The Patty McGovern features arrangements by Thomas Talbert. These were done around the same time as his "Bix Fats Duke" album. Previously available on cd on a very hard to find Norma label release. The original vinyl always seems to go for many $ when it turns up on ebay. I just listened to this cd again, very fine small group arrangements prominently featuring Barry Galbraith, with some nice contributions from Joe Wilder.

Pete B replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Offering and Looking For...
If you google the album name you will see the link to a certain blog that has a link to an mp3 download of the album. I think that's what Chuck's referring to . I had the good fortune to snag a copy of this cd with a preorder at cdjapan. It's really nice. I'm amazed that it is already out of print - I only received mine at the end of July. -

The full session is available on "First Bass" issued by the IAJRC, and readily available. I would assume they paid the appropriate fees, and the cd is excellent. It was produced by OP's discographer Coover Gazdar.

Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Sinatra, Freddie Slack
Pete B replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I managed to get this on dvd-r. Previously I only had a rather poor videocassette of it from a collector friend. The Ellington and Basie segments are very nice. I particularly liked watching Ray Nance do his "showtime" routine. -

Paris Jazz
Pete B replied to garthsj's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I had a chance to leaf through the "Paris Jazz" book yesterday. It is mostly a series of chapters on various jazz clubs in Paris, and also a few historic addresses related to jazz in the city. Not really focused on the history of jazz at all. It is an attractive little book and if I had the good fortune to be travelling to Paris anytime soon I would have bought it. -
from http://story.scout.com/a.z?s=78&p=2&c=630007 Jason Ray, Tar Heel Mascot, Passes Away By UNC Athletic Comm. Posted Mar 26, 2007 Jason Kendall Ray, 21, died Monday morning at Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center. Ray, a senior at the University of North Carolina, was a member of UNC's cheerleading squad and was injured in a pedestrian/vehicle accident in Fort Lee, N.J., on Friday, March 23. He was pronounced dead by doctors at 8:38 a.m. Ray was in New Jersey to perform as the Tar Heels’ mascot, Rameses, in the NCAA Men’s Basketball East Regional in East Rutherford, N.J., on Friday and Sunday. Dozens of family and friends gathered at the hospital’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit since the accident. ”Our family would like to thank the staff at Hackensack University Medical Center for the compassionate and professional care they provided,” says Jason’s brother, Allen, speaking on behalf of the family. “They made this terrible experience as tolerable as possible and gave solace to our family. “We would also like to thank the UNC athletic department. Jason was a member of their family and they extended their support to us and provided support to our family as we have dealt with this terrible loss. “Jason was a wonderful son, brother and friend. He leaves behind a legacy of friendship, laughter, excitement for life and a genuine love for all the people he touched during his all-too-short life.” In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Jason Kendall Ray Memorial Fund, Concord Christian Church, 3101 Davidson Highway, Concord, NC 28027. ”Jason believed in organ donation and in the sharing of the gift of life,” Allen Ray says. “His organs will be donated to the Sharing Network of New Jersey. We hope that Jason’s gift will be able to help up to 50 people in critical need of transplant.” “This is a devastating loss to the Ray family and our University community,” says Director of Athletics Dick Baddour. “Jason had many talents. Over the last several days, we have heard from so many people who said Jason went above the call of duty to brighten their days and make their child smile and laugh. He may have performed in the anonymity that comes with playing the mascot, but his life has had an overt and lasting impact on the people whose lives he touched. Our hearts and prayers again go out to his family and friends in this time of extraordinary grief.” Jason was majoring in business administration with a concentration in marketing at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School and was working toward a minor in religious studies. He had played the Ram mascot for the past three seasons. “Jason gave Rameses an energy that was unique,” says UNC cheerleading coach Brown Walters. “He embodied all of the qualities you would want in a team member. He was a tremendous ambassador of the University of North Carolina and that spirit will live on forever. The Carolina Spirit Program has lost a member of our family and he will be deeply missed.” "The loss of Jason Ray will be felt by all of us who love and care about Carolina,” says Chancellor James Moeser. “His legacy will be one of caring and joy, of hard work and enthusiasm for life. Susan and I join his friends, classmates, teammates and instructors, people across the campus and far beyond Chapel Hill in wishing his family comfort during this time of profound loss." “My heart goes out to Jason’s family,” says Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams. “He was an engaging young man and a friend to a number of our players and managers. They tell me he was a wonderful person. Obviously our team is disappointed with the outcome of Sunday’s game, but that pales greatly in comparison with the loss the Ray family is dealing with today. We ask everyone to remember Jason and his family in their prayers.”
