  1. Horace Parlan: The Maestro
  2. A set of music that captures the spirit of Monk better than most. Many others just play the tunes and do little more.
  3. For me, the ultimate Monk tribute (one ringer with music written by another Monk).

  5. Lester Bowie: The Great Pretender (ECM)
  6. An aside - I recently watched an episode of Inspector Lewis in which am American book dealer with the last name of Jackson said that his father named him Quentin because the father was a devoted Duke Ellington fan. Back to Three People.
  7. Is the art biz as nasty as the music biz? I would imagine so.
  8. I post on https://www.goodreads.com/. Today, when I logged on, there was a recommendation posted for me - by Goodreads, not by an individual. It read: Because you enjoyed For the End of Time - The Story of the Messiaen Quartet You might enjoy: At first I thought, wtf. But then I thought I probably might enjoy reading it. I just wondered where the recommendation came from. I doubt that a human being was behind it, so that leaves a computer. Are they developing computers with senses of humor?
  9. Wonderful story, Jeff. It says much about the waitress, yourself, your musician friend, and how good and kind people can be. I'm going to carry this inside me for as long as I can. I felt a lightness after I read it and I hope it will inspire me to do more good for others in need and just in general.
  10. I saw him at a show with Professor Irwin Corey and Jerry Stiller a few years ago. He was great that evening - his comedic commentary was on the money. Joe Morton just did an Off-Broadway show on Dick Gregory that got good reviews.
  11. Happy Birthday, Tom!
  12. Alan Haven: Allmusic - http://www.allmusic.com/artist/alan-haven-mn0000520967/biography Obit - http://organs.uk/alan-haven/ I have to admit that I'd never heard of him before this.
  13. Nappy Brown Brownie McGhee Molly Pitcher
  14. Helen DeWitt: The Last Samurai
  15. I can remember hearing "Rock Island Line" on the radio here in the U.S, when I was a kid. Even though I didn't know much about music back then (some might say that nothing has changed there ), I knew that he wasn't American. I can't remember if it was the sound of his voice or if it was mentioned that he was from the U.K.
  16. I have a lot of that material, but if Mosaic does it right (as they usually do), I'll probably go for it.
  17. I haven't seen the movie and don't plan to. Dick Gregory sure made his opinion of it clear.
  18. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/18/business/media/this-guthrie-song-is-your-song-a-lawsuit-claims.html?_r=0 Not to bring politics into it, but it's interesting that they're not going after "God Bless America".
  19. Hinterland - series 1
  20. Interesting pairing. I've come to expect that sort of thing from Jeff. Amusing story about Willie Guy Rainey, too.
  21. Nah - I just didn't read the thread title closely before I posted.
  22. Good story. Thanks to both of you for the links.
  23. Inside and outside the jazz world: Not a single artist tribute - my bad.
