  1. http://www.birminghamtimes.com/2016/06/10-of-the-greatest-jazz-groups-bands-orchestras/ I saw this on Mosaic's weekly ad/blog. I suppose that by titling it 10 of the Greatest Jazz Groups, whoever made up this list figured they could get a free pass. And since, like all lists of this kind, it's subjective, in a sense it's beyond criticism. But - any list of this kind that excludes Louis' Hot 5's and 7's, Bird's quintet (either with Miles or KD - the latter would be my choice), the classic Coltrane Quartet, Jelly Roll's Red Hot Peppers, Ornette's first quartet or mid 60's trio, one of Mingus' groups, to name a few - and includes the World Saxophone Quartet and Cab Calloway (or even the Art Ensemble, as much as I love their music) - doesn't deserve much attention. And, as Michael Cuscuna points out, which version of the Messengers? Plus, a photo of the Brown-Roach Quintet follows the Jazz Messengers listing rather than appearing where it should be. I'm surprised that Mosaic would print something like this list, and I guess I'm surprised that I bothered to comment on it. I evidently just needed something to rant about this morning.

  5. Nice one. A man with style.
  6. That rock solid & swinging bottom he gave to so many blues sessions.
  7. When I read the title of this thread, I thought of A.B, Spellman's poem, "Bobby's Ballad", which begins: "bobby hutcherson is playing polka dots/ and moonbeams & it's so clean & pretty/ you'll miss the lyric if you listen lite." and ends: "such is the truth of bobby's song/ as he floats plump effulgent polka dots/ into the argent beams of the bayside moon"
  8. The Door in the Floor - A ten year old film I wish I hadn't wasted my time watching. Jeff Bridges, doing his thing, is the only saving grace of this empty work. I don't think that I've ever seen a worse actor than that bleached out zombie, Kim Basinger, and I hope that I never will. edit - I do have to give the filmmakers credit for being hip enough to have Jeff Bridges' character play some Ornette during a very short scene in the film.
  9. The Hines is a great pickup. And if you haven't already, you should check out Hines/Venuti on Chiaroscuro.
  10. Welcome to the club.
  11. There are some good suggestions in this thread but, if I'm being honest with myself, I have a fair number of Mosaic box sets that I've only listened to once. Until I listen more and get to know the Mosaics I already have, I don't need any more Mosaics. I've been trying to give "needs" priority over "wants" lately.
  12. I mentioned Joao Gilberto above, and I guess his solo albums aren't "jazz". Here are two other good records that aren't jazz either: And a more recent recording: Even if they're not jazz, they're bossa nova. It's all music, and if it's good music, it's all good.

  14. Happy Birthday! And thanks for all of the film tips I've picked up from your posts.
  15. Read the article in my dentist's waiting room a few days ago. I would say that calling her "a complex person" is an understatement. I didn't find the book challenging - though I didn't attempt to begin to learn to read ancient Greek and didn't buy into her child raising theories, which I think was part of her her intent. The last two thirds of the novel is the meat of it, and that's a fairly straightforward read.
  16. Sounds like it belongs in a "guilty pleasures" thread.

  19. If either of you want to restart it, just put an album up and write a bit about it. I'll probably participate if I know the music.
  20. Strange goings on at Fenway last night: 7th inning: 4-1 Sox. Yankees have men on first and second, no outs. Brett Gardner is at bat, looking to bunt. Reliever Robbie Ross Jr. throws a pitch over the plate, about the height of the top of Gardner's head that tips the top of the catcher's glove. The umpire ducks out of the way and the ball goes to the backstop. The runners moved up and the announcers were wondering why they didn't keep running, since the catcher didn't go after the ball. It turned out that the ball was stuck in the netting, just over the overhang, and it was a dead ball. Shades of Bull Durham! Before he was taken out, Ross threw two more wild pitches, one way high and outside and another that skipped way low and inside. Rob Refsnyder scored from first base, one base at a time, on three separate wild pitches. I can't recall ever seeing that before. If I were on the Red Sox, I think I'd give Ross the nickname, Nuke, although all those players are too young to have seen Bull Durham.

  22. Side 1 for me too - near perfection that side 2 can't live up to. When it was issued on CD with three extra tracks, I was annoyed. Why add to something that was already done right? Now that I have an LP version, I almost feel as if it should be a one sided LP.
