Holy Stitt, it's a beautiful reproduction, and in a triple matted frame it looks wonderful. -

Not quite the same thing, but I have seven framed digital drawings of jazz musicians by Don Van Selus (a former poster here and on the BN Board) that I feature and cherish. I have a Duke Ellington poster I have framed in my living room, as well as a poster image of the Miles Davis/Gil Evans box set that I got from Columbia when it was released. That is the centerpiece of the walls in the living room and very expensively framed! In my office at work I have a great framed enlargement of a magazine article about how Lester Young prepares his pork pie hat that Tom in RI sent me that I can gaze at from my desk, and behind me are two posters: A TOCJ RVG poster with the picture of RVG smoking in front of the lathe (given to me by Greg Maltz), and the David X. Young poster that came with the Jazz Loft two cd set. I have pen drawings my youngest brother Bill drew of Duke, Mingus, Cannon, Strays, Miles and Dolphy, framed and on disply in my listening room and in my office at work. I also have a Sidney Bechet Savoy 45 EP cover on display on the wall of my office, and in my listening room a wonderful oil painting of Coltrane done by my brother Bill. . . it's a painted version of the Blue Train cover. I also have a cool little jazz drawing by Vanbeat that I need to get framed. An embarassment of wealth! -
You didn't! There are two things that I really like about Hines' solo playing. One: there's no cocktail prettiness. Or I've never heard it. Not that I dislike me some cocktail prettiness, but it's all jazz with Earl. Two: he has this unique to my ears drive and rhythm. He just seems to motor along like a '30s roadster on a winding road and always have just the right amount of throttle. . . . It's exhilirating.

How many favorites can one have? I really enjoy a lot of Hines work, but my favorites are those I mentioned. Poor Paul! He'll go broke if he buys all our favorites! If we're talking NONsolo Hines, I really like that Delmark of material with Ellingtonians.

I can tell you that the LP set is WAY heavier than the CD set. I actually had both. . . cduniverse sent me the LP set instead of the CD set. . . got that corrected though, don't have it any longer. (This was years ago).

Nancy Wilson & The Three Sounds Sittin' In With Nancy Wilson And The Three Sounds, recorded live at Jorgie's, 1961 VGM Records Dan is right about the sound. I think The Three Sounds back her up on her side.

Add me to the list of those who likes the Geller and the CBBB collaborations. Don't have much else by him but that's likely going to change in the years ahead.

The party is underway! Many more happy ones.

My favorites are the Ellington volumes on Master Jazz/New World. Amazing stuff! I have a Danish cd of early thirties solos that is really nice as well. . . but I keep coming back to the pairing of the amazing fingerwork of Hines (unpredicatable, I really like that choice of word) and the amazing compositions of Ellington.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
jazzbo replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Took the Ellington Reprise in to work and had a great time listening to it as I did the most goshawful database reporting and transfers to a spreadsheet for a big report to the Legislature. -
No wonder Sue's not going to put that one out! You have her copies!
-
Yes, agreed. . . Sometimes it seems melodically a tad more "So Whatty" than other times. . . for me at least. Sometimes it's more "Impressions"istic.
-
I agree that fellow Chris is talented. . . though he does nothing for me personally to be honest! Man I can't believe they are all oohing and ahhing over "Bucky." That guy was not all that! And they seem to want young Will to go home. . . and he did pretty well imo!
-
I often hear the chord changes to "So What" pretty clearly in some versions of "Impressions."

Who cares? We can utilize it for our own purposes. Lon the Leo.

I've been enjoying that Do-Re-Mi and The Cool School two-fer a lot. The instrumental tracks that were left off the recent US reissue of Christy's that included the vocal selections of Do Re Mi are quite nice to have, the album is well programmed. And even though I'm not a big fan of some of the songs on the Cool School lp, the playing is superb and her singing is so so nice (as almost always). She was very unique to my ears. She and Jeri Southern should be better known these days. I wish Jeri's catalog got even the attention that June's has.

A rather short 1967 appearance was circulated as a promo before, on vhs I believe, not dvd. It's excellent and you sure wish it were longer!

Happy birthday Al! Hope you have many happy returns. Have a great dinner. Maybe some fajitas? (This is Texas after all!)

Well Elliot Yasmin did an excellent rendition of "Moody's Mood for Love" tonight. Who'd have thunk? (Another contestant did this in an audition last season actually). He's really good. Also a favorite of mine is Taylor Hicks. Man. . . that guy has the soul of Ray Charles in him there somewhere. I rather doubt either of those wil be in the final four but they're some of my favorite singers of any season on this show.

After a half dozen releases or so you'll begin to realize that you can't go wrong with Helen! I have been listneing to "Lilaac Wine" a bit lately and enjoying it!

What ongoing thread do you never look at?

Me too. I look at Funny Rat now and again, not often, but I never look at these threads (sports is a huge turn away for me). -
Many more happy ones!

Welcome! He changed my life too I would say. He helped introduce me to a wonderful world of music.
