Well. . . I don't know too much. Let me share what I have been able to learn in comparisons with just a few items. I personally feel the top most pictured, the most recent of US releases, is likely the best sounding and most complete. This has been true when I have been able to make comparisons, such as between the US and French releases of the RCA Mingus title and two titles by Gato Barbieri. The Mingus US release had more material, more liner notes, and "better" sound than the French release. Contentwise the Barbieri material was the same, but the US version had two titles on one, and was "better" sounding. "Better" sounding is subjective. . . . Some may prefer the one to the other. I felt that the US versions were perhaps a bit more "full" sounding and less bright.

Just won Jacky Terrasson's "A Paris" (only one of his BNs I don't have I think) from ebay for a total cost of 5.35 . . . not bad!

I really doubt that this thing sounds like a tube radio of old! It just has a tube for an input I would bet, has a solid state output stage. Nice. . . but for a man who doesn't even have a car, and who spent the last decade with a car without any music within, not a big deal! (But I am a tube man!)

I've been downloading some 1975 material from archive.org. . . . I really enjoy these studio rehearsal discs from Ace's studio and Club Front! Amazing opportunity to hear the band working on material. . . . The few live appearances that year are also interesting so far, and I'll download these. Pretty amazing how little there is from 1975 and what hight quality it its!

The Complete Liszt Transcriptions of Beethoven Symphonies, performed by Leslie Howard, on Hyperion. This five cd set has it all: great sound, wonderous interpretations by a virtuoso pianist, incredible source material, fascinating transcriptions to solo piano by Liszt. www.broinc.com often has this for about 30 dollars.

As I remember it Dan, you're correct. They were licensed for release within the European market, or a segment of that market. They weren't licensed for US sales, so in that sense they're "gray" in the US. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

I've got it SS! It was just an attempt at humor. . . I think I'd die laughing if I saw an all blued over Spanish Blue Note cover of "Shades of Redd." Maybe I'm the only one who would bust a gut over it, but I would!

David, I think the reality of the shrinking retail jazz world means that your statement would read more along the lines of: "This issue will put a Leo Parker release in some Borders and Tower stores in the country for a month or two." In a lot of cases they'll order a few copies initially and if they sell, they MAY reorder copies to replace them. . . they may not. I still think it's good that they are releasing this, but I don't think the scope of its distribution will be as you predict.

There were about 102 total of the single discs, but no these box sets are not just groupings of the single discs. They are each three cd collections of material that MOSTLY are within the individual discs, but there are selections on each box set that do not appear on individual discs in the series. And each box set includes a large and thick beautiful booklet with album covers, hand bills, photographs, etc. The booklets are gorgeous!

I do think that counting "lurkers" the impact of these jazz boards is hard to estimate and easy to underestimate. . . . But I'm pretty much in agreement with Brandon, especially about these Time Life Spanish Blue Notes. I know several who will rebuy any US release of titles they did not have before except in the Spanish version. If for no other reason than. . . those all blue covers are hard to take long term!
