Two I'd like to mention: Lush Life and Dakar. Lush Life was quoted as being Van Gelder's favorite Prestige session for some reason. Dakar is very nice because of the baritones. . . unusual, everyone plays very well. At least the sound on almost all of the Prestiges is more than good. . . .

Echoes to the above. Sorry for the loss of your friend Chris. Knudsen was a true benefactor of jazz.

I'll have to check out that single disc. . . I didn't realize it sounded different. To my ears the two cd set in jewelcase, the later release, sounds considerably better than the longbox earlier edition.

I don't have this, but I have nearly all the material on it mainly on separate Verve releases from the US and Japan. . . .Amazing stuff. A treasure trove. I'm sure the booklet is great. I think you did GOOD.

Yeah, when is "Flute Suite" going to be on cd anyway? It's an interesting date David. And the liner notes include Savoy talking about how Van Gelder has really become an expert with that newfangled thing called "STEREO."

I've never heard the lps; the cd sounds acceptable to me. Incredible music!

And if I remember correctly, by the time the record was distributed, the P O box had been closed because the rental fee had not been paid!

I like them both, but I like the cohesion of Water Babies' versions best. I think that Wayne was likely thinking very differently about music in general, perhaps these compositions in particular, between and during these sessions. . . .

hooommmmm. . . I think I could agree with that statement if "Duke Ellington" or "Louis Armstrong" or just plain "JAZZ" were substituted for "hard bop"! Hard bop ain't toppin' my list!

Art Taylor KILLS on this one. That is one very tired drumset by the end. As a former drummer, I dig this one. Dex has a fire lit under his ass!

I think that Kofi and Electric Byrd are two really solid Byrd dates. I dig 'em. . . I like Ethiopian Nights too, and after that. . . well I have most of the others, and listen to them now and then, but Kofi is a keeper.

Ronnie Smith. . . I think he's related to Raurence Brown.

I was really overwhelmed with choices, but went with my heart and voted yes.

I haven't heard the Masakela, but these are all fine choices. . . . I'm looking forward to the Teagarden (a clean copy at last!) and the Al Grey will NOT disappoint!

I've learned to really dig him. Something about his playing used to really GRATE me. Not sure why or specifically what. BUT I am a decided fan now. That footage with Roland Kirk is AMAZING!

Water Babies.

I've listened to their release a half a dozen times. I like it. It's sound is bold and forceful and I think the guys can PLAY. The recording is geared to feature their "hard" sound and is very dynamic and full. I hardly go and see anyone. . . . If they were appearing again in town at a reasonable price I might spring to see them. Would be interesting to see them perform. . . .

Now I find myself anticipating the next Jazz Oracle Records releases with the same excitment! "Grey Gull Rareties" is on the way to me now! Hotcha!

They're as good as they appear. This is the material that used to be used on ESP, plus I believe a bit more. The performances are great. The sound is a bit smoothed over than some other releases, some would prefer this, some wouldn't, but it's not something to stay away from.
