Hopefully warmer today. Had a rough night, Lucinda was not sleeping well . . . and that meant I didn't either. Starting off with an old favorite, my OG LP copy of Grateful Dead "Blues for Allah". . . sounds really good today.

Something different than my usual. I bought this after seeing her Austin City Limits performance and being very impressed. I think I would have mixed and mastered this differently but I like this music. She’s exhibiting a bigger Prince influence than I noticed before, and man can she SING. Brittany Howard “What Now”

Something there is about Tom Harrell’s music that I keep reaching for it the last 12 months or so. Perhaps it’s because it is solidly a part of the tradition and yet also a personal distillation of the post-bop musical world. He’a a favorite of my best friend who is also a trumpeter and that I think also plays a part–we have listened to his music over the years together. This is a nice one. . . a live recording that sounds great and has spirited playing by musicians who listen to each other and enjoy playing together–THAT you can feel in the music. George Robert & Tom Harrell Quintet “Cape Verde” Mons cd 300×300 17.8 KB Alto Saxophone – George Robert Bass – Reggie Johnson Drums – Byron Landham Flugelhorn, Trumpet – Tom Harrell Piano – Dado Moroni Recorded live in Rheinfelden, Switzerland on September 24-25, 1992

Jimmy Smith “Cool Blues” Blue Note RVG Edition cd Despite the complaints many raise against RVG Edition cds I find quite a few that sound really nice at least to me on my system–this is one of them. Great music here! Alto Saxophone – Lou Donaldson (tracks: 1 to 6) Drums – Art Blakey or Donald Bailey Guitar – Eddie McFadden Organ – Jimmy Smith Tenor Saxophone – Tina Brooks Recorded live on mono at Small’s Paradise, New York City on April 7, 1958. Remastered in 2001. All transfers from the analog tapes to digital were made at 24-bit resolution. The original CD issue on this material (B2-84441) contained pitch errors that have since been corrected.

Charles Mingus, Kenny Dorham, Freddie Hubbard for RSD 2025
jazzbo replied to ghost of miles's topic in New Releases
This Dorham sounds so so much better than Olatunji! My copy is flawless. Luck of the draw I guess. -
oe Locke David Hazeltine “Mutual Admiration Society” Sharp Nine cd I have enjoyed revisting this and “2” its sequel. I especially like the lower tempo numbers where the vibraphone “rings out” more. Engineering is really nice on this–all instruments are well portrayed and the overall balance seems very natural.
