At this point Hip-O = Universal seems to be the thing. I wish they had really taken over the concept and just gone with the digipaks. I don't know why that didn't happen, that's my big disappointment. I have all the bonus material other places and to be honest there's a reason why some of it wasn't officially released. I tend to listen to Coltrane as I did in the lp age. I never really liked the Cuscuna produced box set, and I liked the separate issues with bonus tracks, but I think what I'll do is make myself a boxset of the alternate material all over the place and put that with these Original Album sets. Somehow hearing the albums as originally released is my priority and makes me hear new things in them. I found the upcoming Vol.5 at a pretty good price on Blow it Out of Here, so I'm looking forward to that.

sometimes jazz is just too heavy

That's life. By which I mean you can examine many lives within the arts and without and come to that sort of conclusion. Chance and circumstance and nature and nurture and the air and the ether all are a battlefield or a cakewalk and sometimes both to endure and win or be defeated by for any of us. The difference being with artists, and in our case especially jazz artists because we love and understand the art, we have that beauty to savor . . . . And so yes it's bitter-sweet at times, but we don't have to dwell on the bitter background. I'm listening to Nathan Davis tell a little story right now. All those stories! Art is a wonderful thing, to be able to bring something out of the human brain and communicate it in a fascinating way. -
I confess I haven't even really taken a good look at the VV cover! I've seen those covers so many times. Yeah, if you're not seeking a sonic upgrade, and you don't have a nostalgic or "brain" need to have these in lp format, no reason to buy these. I've the best sounds system that I've ever had now (my recent purchase of a PS Audio PerfectWave Transport and DAC really set my system flying!) and I'm really enjoying the sonic upgrade on these.

I'd say the reproductions are mediocre, not lousy. That's a very personal value choice I guess. Would look much better on a digipak, that's the main problem in my opinion. The price I paid was as if I paid ten or eleven bucks each for five reissues, not too bad. And I hardly read notes any longer, I still haven't read the notes of the last three or four Mosaics I bought. . .most bore me. So I'm not unhappy.

Audra McDonald singing a few Ellington tunes on Great Performances, and now An American In Paris on the same program from Carnegie Hall.

Or if you're pressed for time, unplug your router or modem for about thirty seconds.

OKAY, OKAY, I'LL TRY TO STOP.

Aric, John Coltrane only appears on the other two selections. The Sun, and Lord Help Me to Be are Alice Coltrane led tunes that feature Pharoah Sanders with Jimmy Garrison and Ben Riley.

Yes, the box has: Expression At the Village Vanguard Again Om Cosmic Music Selflessness Really enjoying the new mastering.

The one plus that I can see to this set is. . . I think it sounds significantly improved than earlier releases of the material. The same will hold true for the next. I'm used to having multiple versions of Coltrane items, and enjoy listening sometimes to the original release form, and another to an expanded. When the original release sounds this good, I end up grabbing it often enough to justify having it.

Dowloading time is most likely at the mercy of your internet provider. So there may be no direct connection.

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?

Disc the fifth. -
Cosmic Music has been reissued (in very good, imo, sound) on the Original Impulse Album Collection, Vol. 4. Infinity music is scheduled for reissue within Vol. 5 in October.

Oh definitely, I know I'm behind, but it's by choice.

I remember that too Chuck. Things ARE a little different now.

I put this one in today because it was mentioned in this thread. I'd forgotten how nice sounding an album this is.

Listening to this today and really enjoying it. Once again I must say JOB WELL DONE ALLEN.

I can't choose! I think this week if I could have five cds of Ellington I'd choose my French CBS five cd set of material from '47 to '52. . . such good music, and such variety!

Interesting that Clapton is playing different guitars here than his usual Strat. I may be ill or weird, but I'd like to hear this. I'm just willing to give it a chance.

Four or five of these would make a nice Mosaic Select. Is it possible there's a reason we haven't had these on domestic cd. . . such as Brubeck's personal wishes.

I've returned to Prince admiration and collection after a few decades absence. A fun time for me. I don't really think Zappa was a specific influence on the builidng of Sign O' the Times, but perhaps, I don't have any specific knowledge. I think rather that Prince was just building UP to the arranging and production of that release. I am an atypical Prince fan (or at least as far as I can tell online) that likes most Prince AFTER this period, the NPG, and beyond.

They sound pretty good. I'd say there are Japanese issues that sound better when I've been able to compare, and these seem to sound better than the 20 bit US digipak versions I've compared. They're a bit on the loud side, but not as badly as a lot of rock releases.

Okay. Last FM has El Chico.

Well, I like the Hamilton and the Szabo. They're jazz versions of then current hits. And they bring something to them that makes them worth recording in my opinion. If it's possible to hear some of these tracks via a blog or sales site I recommend checking them out.
