Stuart, I'd suggest checking all the settings (maybe again), it's possible that one video setting is preventing this other setting from accessing that aspect ratio?

I don't know Bev, AMC has aired some really good dramas . . . Mad Men, Rubicon. . . .I think there's a chance they'll do well with this material. Watched the De Niro SNL they rebroadcast tonight. The very end with Dana Carvey voiceover really cracked me up.

Egads I'm pretty sure of the recording, and the Italian pianist's name has just shot out of my head. I'll have to search my racks soon to find it and I'll try to remember to revisit this thread.

I enjoy watching Welk on PBS every now and then as well. My Mom's parents would have that show on and my Grandma Dorothy would even dance with us sometimes. It seems almost as if it's a memory from another planet. A happy planet. I'm watching today's episode of "The Naked Archaeologist."

I'm not sure Jazzbo is. No I agree it can fun. In my case it can also be maddening. Doing it properly means waiting long hours for a tube to be totally warmed up before evaluating, and then you have memory issues of what the previous set up sounded like, listening for subtle differences, etc. Eventually for me it becomes a few steps further away from actually listening to and enjoying music. So. . . I've stuck with the suggested tubes from the manufacturer for the most part. And get great sound. I rolled tubes heavily for a few years, and now I rarely swap out tubes, I've found a handful that seem to work really well and have some distinct signatures, and I'll change a tube if I want to have that signature to complement a number of recordings.

Buddy Rich and Johnny Smith sets running low
jazzbo replied to golfcrazy1984's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Nor mine. This is a good set. Yeah, I was a drummer and maybe I enjoy the drumming aspects a bit more than others may, but there is much swinging jazz here to get excited about. I truly like this eet more than I expected to, and am glad I've had it a few years. -
Have to say, I'm not that familiar with KT88s to begin with. I've amps that will run them, but they've been modded to favor EL34s and sound so good I don't run any other output types. I think that input tubes can have a big impact to the overall sound of an amp, just as rectifier tubes can as well. I was surfing at top speed down that slippery tube rolling slope. I lost my reference points over time. I am in a 12A-type step program now.

The quality is "okay." Not great, but a bit better than the copies of the material I've had through a fellow collector for about five or six years.

Well, those sound like good (and expensive) possibilities. I only have one unit in use that uses 12AU7 tubes, and one of my recent "tube rolling" adventures I bought a grab bag off ebay that has a few tubes each from GE, RCA and a few I can't identify. The RCA and the GE sound quite good. I've had Mullards too, from my 1959 EICO integrated stereo amp. If you don't need matched pairs, or even matched brands, there's almost always some bargains on ebay. Can your amp also use EL34s? I'm pretty sold on the "Winged C" Svetlana tubes from Russia. And there's a modification for grid connection that seems to make a very significant difference (I've an amp I've known before and after this modification, and it was quite a change.) The thing I've discovered over time is that I believe that tubes sound differently in different circuits and applications, and it's worth the time and effort to experiment and judge for yourself.

Personally, one of the big appeals of the man's work for me is Jobim's singing. Just unique, so expressive. Charming, enchanting. One of my favorite singers of any type.

I agree; I watched that very early this morning. Been a good series of episodes the last three or so. And it's heating up a few more degrees. I started re-watching this series, a favorite.

LOL! Wow. Unexpectedly cool. They're going for it while there's a remnant of a market for discs. They must need some money. "We're going to have to sell 3,000". . . I don't think they are going to have a problem, or more accurately I guess I'd be surprised if they didn't have to worry about that.

Decided to join the throngs who have read this book and its companions and see what the fuss is.

I love Jobim. But these fully-orchestrated dates don't do as much for me as smaller group dates do. Don't listen to these Riddle or OGerman recordings often at all. Over time my favorite Jobim has become late Jobim, the Banda Nova material.

Watched last night's SNL. A few good skits.

Roulette lp back cover is reproduced as the back cover of the cd booklet on the Toshiba cd reissues.

I'll have to look for this one soon. I've become quite a Lovano fan over time. This is a nice concept.

Sonny Clark -- an interesting article
jazzbo replied to Victor Christensen's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I've grown ashamed of my out-of-control jazz collecting. So I've started collecting classical. -
I don't know what the source material for the new cds (available via Dusty Groove, Aric) is but the discs sound much better than the probably-LP-sourced Fresh Sound cds, which have a dull and rolled off sound in comparison. It's not a subtle difference.

Are there any box bargains currently available?
jazzbo replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That was even cheaper a few days in December via Europe. Some great performances and recordings in that box. Last one I ordered was the Heifetz Original Jacket one, it's on the way. -
The new cds sound significantly better. . . I hesitated, but I'm glad I bought them. Not essential recordings, but fun. The Bryant Bros. contribute to a great feel.
