Yeah. I also agree that the new XRCDs sound fantastic. I have two, Soul Station and True Blue. I may get more in the future.

I guess we all hear things differently. Yes, I find that many RVGs and JRVGs sound compressed and some bright and a few even harsh. I can do something about those, and many sound splendid, alive and kicking. I decided about a decade ago to build a system with flexible sound. I have a tube amplifier that sounds more like a solid state amplifier than otherwise, but does allow me to tailor the bias of the tubes and "roll" tubes to tailor the sound. I also have a preamp that has adjustable output up to 5 Volts and of course I can roll tubes there. I also have a tube "buffer amp" that runs a tube at a low bias and fleshes out the sound of thin recordings. With a few adjustments and/or a change of a tube or two I can alter the sound of the system to suit a recording. I find when I dial in the sound for RVGs, there's a realism to the sound, a texture to the sound that gives a full body to the instruments. To me this is the most "REAL" my system sounds, it sounds like I'm in a small club with the band. And despite what I've read from others, there are real dynamics in these recordings. (I'm also a fan of the Concord RVG series; I have every issue in both the Blue Note and the Concord RVG series). The BN Works cds. . . well I've parted with many of them because I prefer another version where available. They're sort of polite, sedate and a bit boring to my ears. I certainly can understand their appeal to others, especially those who have no way to alter the tone or weight of the soun in their system. More and more with my flexible system I'm able to step aside from fretting over sonics as I had in the past and just immerse myself in the music. I think it's great we all have different preferences, what counts is we're passionate about the music. That's why I come here. Passion for minutiae and pressings and engineering I can find at the Steve Hoffman forum 24/7.

I first heard it about the same time as Jim, and was about a half year older. I had just come back from living in Africa and was in rural Ohio and hated what I heard on the radio. I heard this and Filles De Kiamanjaro and Miles Davis At Fillmore all about the same time and they just knocked me on my ass. Especially Bitches Brew. It had a wild mixture of blues and African sound and something totally different and the energy just has never left the music for me. It's definitely a desert island disc for me, and I have never tired of it, and find new joy in it year by year. I love In A Silent WAy too. But it's no Bitches Brew.

I bought my fist cds in 1987. Don't remember what they were but they may have been Coltrane cds.

The sound quality is pretty good on those, though if Mosaic were to put these out they'd sound better due to changes in mastering, and the type of source search Mosaic follows. Good luck finding those, I bought these about the time of release the ONLY time I've ever seen them for sale.

Not, or not entirely, Davies transfers in those JSPs if I'm not mistaken. I haven't heard them. I have the material in Masters of Jazz, Chrongical Classics, the RCA Centennial box, Columbia cds, etc.

Two more episodes to go of Caprica. This series is a slow builder (sort of like, but different from, Rubicon), but it pays off. This series fascinates me. I'll be watching it again. Wish it could have had another season.

The discs in this set are going to feel the same way. . . . I've been extremely careful and gotten them out safely enough, but with effort.

Ken, I'm right there with Matthew: I probably reach for the Parker set more often, and I think it's a fascinating set, a unique bit of history and mythology. But Mosaic owns this material and it should be in print in the future (though one should expect possible backorder status it seems). I doubt the Jazz Crusaders set is in danger in the near future, but you never know these days. . . if you KNOW you will eventually get this set, then I'd suggest ordering that.

Yes, I bet you would. If I ever find a pot of gold I'll have it restored perhaps. Toay I'm riding a rented 2010 Harley Davidson Street Glide (FLXH). Nice bike, rides smoother than my Fat Bob, is a bit more comfortable for around town (but probably not for the long haul, as it has mid-controls and that puts more pressure on my hips than forwards do over the hours). It has a fork-mounted fairing that frustrates me. I'd rather not have a fairing or screen. I get less wind on my chest (and I've never been bothered by wind on my chest to be honest, ever) but I get really annoying head buffeting at any speed over residential speeds. Pfui. I'm eager to get my Fat Bob back, but right now. . . it needs repairs. I was struck from behind by a Dodge Ram truck while stopped to make a left-hand turn on Wednesday. I walked away, but the bike fared worse than I did. Still waiting to hear a repair estimate and to hear from the guy's insurance company.

There's more than just alternates as a difference between the two sets. I say get the 8 disc, it will be a cornerstone of your Parker collection for years and years to come. There are sessions in the Mosaic set with more complete items (i.e. not just Parker solos) and some sound pretty darned good all considered. But the Savoy/Dial box smokes them in the sound quality of the original source material. Both boxes have different types of liner notes, but they're both pretty good.

And a nice booklet. I'd get the set rather than track down old LPs and boot cds of the live stuff. I have almost all that live (and studio) stuff on other sources, and it sounds SO MUCH BETTER on the box set.
