  1. That may be so true it has frikkin' laserbeams mounted on its forehead. Paul, you may be familiar with these but I highly recommend Rex Stout and Cornell Woolrich. Love those guys. I'd rather say he doesn't disappoint very often. Some of his are brilliant, and I always wish the rest were just a bit more like those. This thread has made me realize it's been too long since I read one of the B. Cool and Lamb detective series by A. A. Fair (a pseudonym of course).
  2. Short and short-lived series. Very Fox TV but not too bad. I enjoy watching Juliana.
  3. Happy birthday Clifford! I hope you have a great day and a great party! I'd be there except I'll be working tonight til ten and will be lucky to get straight home on my rented two wheels in the rain! Many happy happy returns!
  4. Interesting as I've compared one of the two XRCDs I have to TOCJ version and hear a large enough difference for me to prefer the XRCD versions. I hear more closely defined instrumental images and a more dynamic presentation. Yesterday I ordered another XRCD and the first of the SACDs. I'm anticipating having a pay check soon.
  5. Agreed. What I like about HERE as opposed to THERE is that there's much more discussion about the music or our enjoyment and perception of the music. That's a better balance that I prefer. I didn't at all mean to infer that we can't or shouldn't discuss these things here. Nor do I have any delusions of authority, etc. I read and post at both sites, but I prefer the way we converse and what we converse overall better here. And I was merely stating my personal viewpoint.
  6. Yeah. I also agree that the new XRCDs sound fantastic. I have two, Soul Station and True Blue. I may get more in the future.
  7. I guess we all hear things differently. Yes, I find that many RVGs and JRVGs sound compressed and some bright and a few even harsh. I can do something about those, and many sound splendid, alive and kicking. I decided about a decade ago to build a system with flexible sound. I have a tube amplifier that sounds more like a solid state amplifier than otherwise, but does allow me to tailor the bias of the tubes and "roll" tubes to tailor the sound. I also have a preamp that has adjustable output up to 5 Volts and of course I can roll tubes there. I also have a tube "buffer amp" that runs a tube at a low bias and fleshes out the sound of thin recordings. With a few adjustments and/or a change of a tube or two I can alter the sound of the system to suit a recording. I find when I dial in the sound for RVGs, there's a realism to the sound, a texture to the sound that gives a full body to the instruments. To me this is the most "REAL" my system sounds, it sounds like I'm in a small club with the band. And despite what I've read from others, there are real dynamics in these recordings. (I'm also a fan of the Concord RVG series; I have every issue in both the Blue Note and the Concord RVG series). The BN Works cds. . . well I've parted with many of them because I prefer another version where available. They're sort of polite, sedate and a bit boring to my ears. I certainly can understand their appeal to others, especially those who have no way to alter the tone or weight of the soun in their system. More and more with my flexible system I'm able to step aside from fretting over sonics as I had in the past and just immerse myself in the music. I think it's great we all have different preferences, what counts is we're passionate about the music. That's why I come here. Passion for minutiae and pressings and engineering I can find at the Steve Hoffman forum 24/7.
  8. Which may be a good thing. Work is good for one. (I started working again on Tuesday.)
  9. I first heard it about the same time as Jim, and was about a half year older. I had just come back from living in Africa and was in rural Ohio and hated what I heard on the radio. I heard this and Filles De Kiamanjaro and Miles Davis At Fillmore all about the same time and they just knocked me on my ass. Especially Bitches Brew. It had a wild mixture of blues and African sound and something totally different and the energy just has never left the music for me. It's definitely a desert island disc for me, and I have never tired of it, and find new joy in it year by year. I love In A Silent WAy too. But it's no Bitches Brew.
  10. Many many many happy returns.
  11. This is a great show for many reasons. Good tv, indeed.
  12. I bought my fist cds in 1987. Don't remember what they were but they may have been Coltrane cds.
  13. The sound quality is pretty good on those, though if Mosaic were to put these out they'd sound better due to changes in mastering, and the type of source search Mosaic follows. Good luck finding those, I bought these about the time of release the ONLY time I've ever seen them for sale.
  14. Not, or not entirely, Davies transfers in those JSPs if I'm not mistaken. I haven't heard them. I have the material in Masters of Jazz, Chrongical Classics, the RCA Centennial box, Columbia cds, etc.
  15. Awesome movie!
  16. Two more episodes to go of Caprica. This series is a slow builder (sort of like, but different from, Rubicon), but it pays off. This series fascinates me. I'll be watching it again. Wish it could have had another season.
  17. The discs in this set are going to feel the same way. . . . I've been extremely careful and gotten them out safely enough, but with effort.
  18. Many many happy returns my friend!
  19. Smooth move! Let us know what you think in a few weeks.
  20. I think there's a distinct possibility that Fats was playing basically what Tadd wanted or expected him to play on that record date. . . .
  21. Yeah, well shit happens. Sure happened on Wednesday. I still feel all whiplashed, but it's a bit better today.
  22. Happy New Year all to all! Damn, it better be a better one!
  23. And I feel compelled to say that not the entire Parker box set is "just solos." There are some very interesting near complete and complete performances.
  24. Yes, I'm lucky. Feel like I was thrown through a wall, but it's just sore and stiffness. Not even any visible bruising. Can't wait to get my Fat Bob back, but it's probably going to take a little time.
  25. Ken, I'm right there with Matthew: I probably reach for the Parker set more often, and I think it's a fascinating set, a unique bit of history and mythology. But Mosaic owns this material and it should be in print in the future (though one should expect possible backorder status it seems). I doubt the Jazz Crusaders set is in danger in the near future, but you never know these days. . . if you KNOW you will eventually get this set, then I'd suggest ordering that.
