  1. Great prices for the Bird and Billie. The Pres is a great disc. I like the Patty Waters a lot. And the Sun Ra is a trip.
  2. Added a few t hat I double ordered by mistake.
  3. That didn't open for me. . . . But you can go directly to 'the source' http://www.espdisk.com/official/SaleItems.html
  4. Ghosts, Albert Ayler, "Spiritual Unity" ESP DISK
  5. Very much worth it musically in my opinion. And the sound is good to very good on these discs. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
  6. I agree, without the alternates. tranemonk, I think you're doing the right thing. This is great music. Some see this as the BEST Ellington. I don't, but it's great stuff.
  7. I had no idea what you were talking about, I had to look it up . . . seems a budget release that probably stole their "masters" from Chrongical (sic) Classics or the RCA set of the same material. I would think you would know if you had the Ellington material in this time frame and don't have to buy it again. Personally, I would buy the legitimate US release if I could. I don't know if you would consider this essential or not, not sure how you view this period of Ellington. I know how you feel about Armstrong of the same vintate. Here's what the Duke Ellington Society pages say about this release: 01/3 DEMS 14/1 Sugabeat S3Beat 301 3 CD set Sir Duke The classic Victor recordings1940-1942 This 3 CD set has been sent to me. It has 72 recordings. It's neatly packaged with the discs inside the box in cardboard envelopes. The sound quality is good - similar to the RCAs, I imagine. The only credit for any engineering is given as 'Digital remastering by Mass Masters'. Who he? The originators call themselves Sugabeat Ltd. and the set originates in England. is the only address. I've just been there and it says in many different languages that the site is under construction. Anyone anything to add? 8. Yes, but I do really enjoy Svend's playing.
  9. Sadly, you could be right. . . .
  10. I've avoided the whole mess by never watching a Superbowl!
  11. I had a seventies Marantz receiver for a while. The stereo I have now is several times better! I did used to enjoy an older vintage sound (have a '59 EICO integrated stereo amp) but it's too limited for me nowadays. They make some incredible stereo equipment now, especially in the tube world, which has sound so far beyond the classic idea of "tube sound."
  12. Last night: Frode Gjerstad Trio Here in Austin at "Space 12" Good time!
  13. Lost Season 6 premier.
  14. That will be a great show. Such an amazing triumvirate of musicians!
  15. Was a well-presented and interesting show! It was fun to be there with Kevin and Clifford!
  16. Today is the day for Space 12! It looks as if it's not going to rain so I think I'll be there. "Lost" will be recorded, you bet.
  17. It amazes me what they take seriously there sometimes. I imagine this place looks odd from another viewpoint as well! Jazz is sure a stepchild there, and "sound" is more important than "music." But it takes a lot of different strokes to turn the big engine over.
  18. Yup. Season 3 is off to a bang up start as well. Right now
  19. Well, that thread is back up over there, minus a lot of posts. I really like Soul Station and True Blue. . . I'll probably buy a few more titles from future batches. Interesting to hear Blue Note on XRCD.
  20. Yes, that trumpet entrance scared me as well! I like the sound on these a lot.
  21. Updated, one sold.
  22. Prince movies are among my favorite comic book movies.
  23. There's no "right" or "wrong" answer to "what's the best sounding version" of anything. You're going to get differing opinions. I have some of these in Japanese Impulse 24 bit lp facsimile versions and prefer them to the sound of the 'nineties US digipaks. Others prefer the very first US releases. The US digipaks do sound very good.
