Really? It's a better "action" movie than the first, but. . . well. . . I like the first of all best of all four, and then I like the fourth next best.

Anybody know if there's still a Blue Note? I wished them luck in a mail regarding a proposition for a Mosaic Select, and in his recent (well probably two weeks by now) reply, MC said they didn't know anything about their future yet... I guess it takes a while to evaluate things and decide how to milk that cow... Mosaic has obviously been milking a lot of other cows for a long time. They aren't an EMI property, so I'm sure their future is fine. They really do need to get on that Braxton Arista set, though! Actually, Mosaic is partly-owned, if I remember correctly half-owned, by EMI.

Thanks gentlemen. Chris, no reason to apologize, the reason this is coming some time after the event is my own avoidance of announcing it.

Thanks all you great pals, Sandi, MG, GA, DJ, Bill and James. It's getting better day by day. Though weekends are tough. I am finding new ways to combat the loneliness. For example last night I wrote her a poem. (She never much liked my poetry, but that doesn't matter). Anyway, what this thread shows over and over is. . .there's no place like O!

Davis/Evans: box or individual discs?
jazzbo replied to Big Al's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Gosh Al, knowing you the way I do (a tiny slice, not a comprehensive knowledge!) I'd say. . . individual cds. -
Randy, no information to offer, but I'm thinking of you both.

He makes electrics too. If I played more guitar I'd order one because the bass is so wonderful, but I don't play enough to warrant it and will stick with my old Ovation Breadwinner solidbody (which is a nice guitar!)

I agree that "Batman Begins" was excellent as an action movie. . . but I hated the way they reinvented the "history". . . .! (Well, maybe not the way, but just that they did!)

Thanks B, and E, and all (I don't want to keep posting about this). I've gotten through the last four months with the help of many friends, at hand and online, and I've consoled myself somewhat with the fact that we did everything possible to combat the diseases, and we were able to do it all together because of the wonderful benefits I've had in 25 years of state government service and hadn't squandered. Also, we always talked through everything and we knew how we felt about each other and expressed it. Because of the danger we even forced ourselves to talk extensively about what would happen if the disease won and I know exactly what she would want me to do. Which includes finding someone else to share my life with. But it's very hard, she was the centerpiece of my life. I even have postponed a retirement we were both looking forward to because I can't look into the future to a retirement without her yet. The shock has worn off and there's real pain to wade through. I'm doing alright overall, time will be my friend.

B, I bought a fretless "Wishbass" made by Steve Wishnevsky and LOVE it. It's so easy to play and quite an interesting sounding axe. If I were ready to buy a guitar, I'd query him--seems that around your price point you could have a unique guitar (literally, he'd build one to your design). www.wishnevsky.com www.wishbass.com

Absolutely. Sometimes I think we all forget that, like them or not, whether or not we believe fair play is in action or not, they're just boards. Life is far more complicated and important, and jazzbo, I sure do hope that second bone marrow transplant yielded a positive outcome. Well, thanks for your wish. It didn't. This was an unrelated donor transplant with a one in three chance of success, a one in three chance of immediate disaster, and a one in three chance of chronic host vs graft disease and death within one to three years. What happened was a disaster. The donor cells attacked her lungs and did so much damage that she was unable to breathe on her own. On October 8 I lost her. The MDS won. . . I had been so convinced that we would beat the MDS as we had beaten (sort of I guess) the lymphoma. I miss her very much.

Good call Marty. That movie made me dog tired!

well, I may not be able to play by the rules, and I don't quite have the same idea of an "action" movie per se, but here goes some of my favorites. The Fifth Element Alexander (Revisited version) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon House of Flying Daggers Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut) Hellboy (the first portion of this film is killer)

Thelonious Monk - New Sony Columbia CD reissues
jazzbo replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
I've got to say that I agree, these are likely repressings. Which makes the Big Band and Quartet release a ringer, possibly mispriced. -
I\'m not too surprised to hear that story and would like to know more as well. I noticed that eMusic carries this title below and it spurred me to dig up my cd copy. Just finished listening to it and must say I really think anyone who likes Gonsalves should listen to it. . . really a nice session! Villegas adds an interesting dimension to the Ellingtonian air. James try as I might I really don't know how to answer your question. Sure, since the RCA set is so highly priced these days, that's not the way to go. But Ducal music is so important that I'm not sure what route to suggest in grabbing the music, except keep at it. I'll confess that I spent a large amount of time and thousands of dollars in the nineties getting as much Ellington as I could because I became ADDICTED to the musical world he presents. I still grab Ellington I don't have. (And Ellington I already have!) And I find NO clunkers!

Well, the music on these is excellent. I have the music on other recordings and haven't bothered with the JSP, which likely lifted the music in their way from those same sources.

Hey David, yes, Lonson was banned. He was continually goaded and misquoted about his statement that he found the rest of the site boring, disagreed with the philosophy behind the review writing guidelines and only liked to post on the bulletin board. In a way I feel another poster is responsible for his banning because I remember post after post misrepresenting my opinions, and my responses back to clarify seemed to annoy Mike tremendously, and he called me an asshole and locked and then deleted the thread after banning me when I called him (in PM) about his decision to lock it. In my view he was as much an asshole as I was if not more, and I was very tired of his insecurity about the board especially vis a vis this one, and I'm glad to let the whole matter lie. To be honest, I was peeved a few days, but this was in the midst of one of the most important periods of my life, the beginning of my wife's second bone marrow transplant, which soon become the most intense series of events I've ever gone through, and AAJ banishment pales in comparison. And ultimately nothing stopped me from returning to AAJ as someone else!

Flurin, I won't say "just forget about the Live and Rare" but. . .you can leave it lie for some time. Has some nice stuff but. . .there's a reason I think that it wasn't in the big RCA box! My favorite part are the "answers" Duke gives to a number of questions that would be asked by radio staff.

John, I don't know how long you've been collecting, but I've been collecting records and tapes and cds for over 35 years. . . . I used to read liner notes with rapt attention. And I've read hundreds of books about jazz and jazz artists. Now. . .I think I've had enough! The last five years or so I've not paid that much attention. I think the last set of liner notes that REALLY impressed me were Chris Albertson's for the Basie Mosaic.

The internet never fails to astound me. I found a site listing my 1967 class at the school outside of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia! There are even photos of my sister, one of my brothers, and myself! http://www.ethi-usmappingmission.com/26133...session*id*val* If anyone knows where Sandy Cowper or Tamara Orr is today, let me know.

Thanks Reiner. Wasn't interested in that one. -

Flurin, you're right, I totally blanked out that those two were reissued by US Columbia a half a decade ago. I clearly need to go back to the Columbia years soon and listen to these discs~! It's good news about Big Band and Quartet, but . . . why not the entire two cds?
