  1. From that blog Weiz mentions: The Golden Flute / Yusef Lateef Cat On A Hot Fiddle / Stuff Smith Candido / Candido Camero Personal Appearance / Sonny Stitt Johnny Griffin / Johnny Griffin California Here I Come / Bill Evans Alexandria The Greatn / Lorez Alexandria Sittin' In / Dizzy Gillespie Joe Newman Quintet At Count Basie's / Joe Newman Blues Caravan / Buddy Rich Hello, Dolly! / Ella Fitzgerald After Hours At The London House / Sarah Vaughan My favorites of these are the Diz, Newman and of course the excellent Lateef, and there are others too, right, like the Kirk in Cophenhagen (essential!)? Are are these above, and others, not really part of the same series?

  3. Word.
  4. I have a mono lp of Cosmic Scene, and the Mosaic Single. Very nice little session indeed! Yesterday I got the Jazz Beat version of "A Drum is A Woman" from Worlds Records. Well, aside from the obvious problems of provenance of which I'm well aware, this is a beautiful digipak with the best cover image, glossy as an Impulse reissue, I've seen on cd, and sound that I think is a tad better than the CBS cd from France. (Plus one extra track). Until Columbia and/or Mosaic see fit to grace us with an official release this is one worth having. A friend of mine thinks the music on this is silly, but I really like it more and more.

    Duke Ellington

Well, I guess it would be pricey . . . but it's worth looking for at a good price and you never know. There is a Definitive Music edition from Spain with nearly the same material, but minimal notes, which is not a good thing in this instance. The music is great!

    Duke Ellington

James, you have an exciting road ahead of you! I keep returning to the world of Ellington/Strayhorn music because it contains all human experience in musical mode: excitement, tranquility, love, hate, lust. . . .All the colors and textures of life. You can almost NOT go wrong. I've discovered over time that all periods are worth examining. I used to love the earliest most, and the latest least, but I've learned to just love it all. One recommendation I would make: look for the Decca three cd collection "Early Ellington." It sort of went out of print but still can be found. Excellent music, sound and notes. Another recommendation: seek out the Pablo and Riverside OJC cds, they also are sort of out of print but still findable now and not a clunker among them.
  7. Oddly enough I would think that in the seventies they felt these covers would not sell because the people "dressed funny." And now we look at people in the seventies and think. . .boy they dressed funny!
  8. Wow. . . I guess I'd never seen the original cover before!
  9. Right, the alternative (tell me about it, I'm learning too much about it) sucks. And I just liek the age I am and the way that my life is set up partly as a result. In six weeks I can tell my employers to shove it if I feel like it at any time, and retire, and do something else. The last few years I've had more money than I ever have in my life even though I've been shelling out more money than ever before in my life. And a lot of "urgencies" have left me. I can contemplate my moves or nonmoves, not hurl through scenarios and situations. And I even dress, look and act better than I did ever before! Win win. . .I hope to keep enjoying it some time longer. It's a very interesting cd this one, worth seeking out. If I see any leads I'll pass them along.
  10. Yes, that old. I'm HAPPY to be that old!
  11. Not surrendering my copy! This was recorded on the afternoon of my birth!
  12. I too really liked him in "I'm Not There." And am looking forward to his grittier (less of a joke) rendition of the Joker. RIP. . . sad to hear of such a young death of a growing talent.
  13. Happy Birthday Bill! Many more happy happy ones!
  14. I don't think that's going to happen. . . there's NO Columbia material whatever on yourmusic currently.
  15. Glad you got it Evan. I got this from eMusic and I think the music is fantastic, and the sound gets the job done.
  16. Well, you didn't get a wrongly assebled set, but you could still have been "brain dead" part of the time! (Just speaking from my own personal experience really!)
  17. Jimi Hendrix Live at Monterey
  18. Charles Mingus The Millenium Collection: The Best Of Charles Mingus Nancy Wilson The Nancy Wilson Show! Julie London All Through The Night (Remastered) Sarah Vaughan The Divine One (Remastered) Joe Williams Everyday I Have The Blues (Remastered)
  19. I liked it! The women were beautiful! What sets this apart is the handheld video thing and the way there was no real explanations or narrations and the mystery was pretty intact throughout. Cool on the big screen!
  20. Wow, lots of nice Storyville titles added as well as more from Uptown and two Phil Grenadiers
  21. I'm going to see it Sunday; four friends and I have been planning this outing since we saw the preview together at our last "macho man movie get together" (Beowulf).
  22. There's a wonderful Japanese Blue Note cd, but it was expensive WHEN it was in print. Also, there was a Classics (was there not?)
  23. I'll second the recommendation for the Beverly Caverns, and I really like the Verve albums, which unfortunately aren't on cd (what a nice Select that would be). I like all the Riversides as well, and haven't explored the GHB labels output too thoroughly, something else to look forward to.
  24. Nah, my keyhole watchin' days were through by the time I left Philly in '66 to go to Addis.
  25. Here's hoping!
