    Keely Smith, RIP

Keely Smith, the iconic singer/performer known for her many solo recordings as well as her musical partnership with first husband Louis Prima died in Palm Springs, CA on Saturday, December 16. She was 89 and under physicians’ care at the time of her passing from apparent heart failure. 4. This info was in the liner notes of this two-fer, which is how I first heard the session:
  5. There is no honor among thieves.
  6. No, I haven't either. I've been especially disappointed with the lack of bargains on those Classical "bricks" - I'm just not seeing those deep discounts. I'm hoping that prices will drop after the first of the year, as they do post-holiday inventory clean outs. As for jazz, heck, I'm not even seeing any releases! No new Verve boxes, Sony...nuthin'!
  7. Cool! To be fair, if the OP is only interested in another AirPlay receiver, the device I linked to would do the same at around the same price, and with a lot less bother.
  8. Can this send or receive an AirPlay stream?
  9. Now up to $204.90.
  10. I use two Airport Expresses, of varying vintages, and two Apple TVs (ditto), and one device that has AirPlay connectivity built-in. I used to sometimes have problems with connectivity, but found that the latest Comcast router has made things a lot better - if you have Comcast, you should check with them, as I think you can swap out your router at no cost. Otherwise, just keep your AEs up to date - make sure you apply updates to them and your other devices. And sometimes it just helps to unplug them and plug them back in. Old school, but it can work. You also asked about alternative devices. Last year's Apple TV had an optical audio out, but the newer ones do not. There are third-party AirPlay receivers, such as this: https://www.amazon.com/ANEWISH-Wireless-Receiver-Airplay-Adapter/dp/B01N5FOVAJ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1513311806&sr=8-3&keywords=airplay+receiver
  11. Hope you get through it OK. That's not the kind of smoke you want.

    Sunny Murray

RIP. He profoundly changed the way I heard the role of drums.
  13. I hope he gets better soon. A giant in the field.
  14. That, and also this:

    Mundell Lowe RIP

RIP. He seemed to be instrumental in the Charlie Parker Records label; maybe there was an Aubrey Mayhew connection. Truly an amazing life, and he played some sweet guitar. San-Diego Union Tribune San Diego Reader
  16. I saw The Jazz Messengers once. I wish I could remember the date. It was at The Village Gate in Manhattan. It was the band sometime after Wynton left; was Valery Ponomarev in it? I went because I heard that George Benson would be sitting in, as indeed he did. I had never been to the Gate before; it had cement walls almost like a cellar, and the acoustics were terrible for jazz. Blakey was wearing big-ass hearing aids, but was fun to watch.
  17. The "when" I can't tell you. I discovered it after I got the Mosaic Select. When I rip the CDs to iTunes, I like to have them by the original albums, including the covers. A search for Comin' On revealed that, for some reason, they removed the photo.
  18. I think they're two different shots from the same photo shoot. There had to be some deliberate reason to switch to the second shot (I like the first shot better). Could it be that, when it came time to create the CD cover, they couldn't locate the original negative for the first shot? They did some weird things sometimes. I'm still puzzled by the cover of Dizzy Reece's Comin' On. The original cover had a photo, then it didn't:
  19. So sorry to hear this. I love the interview he did with Ben Sidran for Talking Jazz. LH&R... one of the greats. RIP.
  20. RIP. Always enjoyed his playing.
  21. 1) How does he think Brooklyn, where he grew up, influenced him? 2) Ask him to speak a little about his cousin, Wynton Kelly.
  22. It's just an investment, a place to park some money (OK, a lot of money). Sure to appreciate in value. Similarly, Manhattan is getting overrun with global money. Tons of new housing skyscrapers; even if fully bought, I'll bet most of the living spaces are not occupied most of the year.
