    Jutta Hipp

I call it hearsay because the only person we're hearing these allegations from is von Schuttenbach, who never even met Hipp. She says she "found evidence;" okay, when she publishes and shows us the evidence, then we can make our decisions. Mind you, it might all turn out to be correct, but right now it's hearsay. Hipp not only turned down his compositions, she turned down his advances. Although Feather’s memoir makes no mention of any sexual tension or personal conflict, Hipp’s biographer, Katja von Schuttenbach, found evidence when she interviewed musicians who knew Hipp; they said that Feather pursued Hipp romantically once she was in the United States. Feather was married and a father at the time, and Jutta was engaged to a Hungarian guitarist named Atilla Zoller. Even though they called off their engagement after he moved to the United States in 1956, Zoller and Hipp remained lifelong friends. Von Schuttenbach has been researching Hipp since 2005 as part of her master’s thesis, and she intends to publish as a biography. Her account will show how Feather retaliated, turning Hipp, in von Schuttenbach’s words, “from protégée to persona non grata.”
  2. Abercrombie, Mick Goodrick, Emily Remler and John Scofield @ Berklee 3/24/88:
  3. Thanks.
  4. Check out Abercrombie's contributions to side 2.
  5. I just finished listening to Road Trips vol. 1 no. 1 (mostly November 1979) and I have to say it smoked. The band was on fire, very creative, and Brent was very much in the thick of it.
  6. dead.net just announced their next box set release: RFK Stadium, July 12 & 13, 1989. Six discs.
  7. Just do a web search for him. Site after site comes up with his passing. Also see his Facebook page.
  8. Very sad news. I was thinking about him this morning. I sent a letter to him a few weeks ago at his address in intensive care, and hearing a track from his Cat & Mouse album, was wondering how he was doing. His was a great voice, both in playing and recording. RIP.

Leonard Feather doesn't come off well in the article. To be fair, the bad stuff is largely hearsay. Still, it seems like he did much to dampen her career.

Just read the article (there's a link to it in the Mosaic Daily Jazz Gazette). Fascinating read. She seemed like someone I'd like to be friends with - someone who liked jazz for the art, but wasn't thrilled with the business. Was also nice to see Tom Evered's name again.
  12. Hard to believe he's 75. He seems perpetually young. Happy birthday!
  13. I had never heard of Sagittarius. Fascinating story: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagittarius_(band) I wouldn't have identified Campbell as the lead singer.

  15. It's interesting how time marches on. Right now, the years are roughly equal where the Benedetti tapes were rumored about and their existence was questionable (30 years or so, 1955-85) and the Mosaic has been available for all to hear (1985 - present). They've gone from being a holy grail to just some more entries in the Parker discography. If Mosaic ever releases the Buddy Bolden cylinders, it'll probably go OOP in a couple of years!
  16. Thanks for the NL post. Well-written, to the point, and believable. It didn't occur to me that the Benedetti box has been around 30 years! Can't imagine any of the majors keeping a box in print for that long. Let's look forward to a few more great Mosaic boxes! And thanks too for mentioning our Organissimo board.
  17. I imagine any Bags is worth listening to, but, for the record, I haven't listened to JTWIHTB yet. But Teddy Edwards, Monty Alexander and Ray Brown? C'mon. As for Memphis Jackson, the first time I saw that title was on a CDJapan listing, so dunno. I'd guess all those Impulse Bags releases are due for a reevaluation. Hey, maybe Mosaic can do a box! Oh yeah...
  18. I got that Milt Jackson/Ray Brown a few weeks ago from Dusty Groove, also on vinyl, $4.99 used. Now I have to find it's counterpart (recorded on the same night):
  19. That's pretty funny, Chewy.
  20. I really like this:
