  1. It looks like Roulette and Colpix went to Warners. I've always been interested in the Colpix material - I might get that Nina.
  2. Just saw this interesting new release notice on Amazon. The cover has an Impulse logo, but the label in the listing says Blue Note.
  3. "Paul Joseph Horn was born in New York City on March 17, 1930, and began studying piano at 4, clarinet at 10 and saxophone at 12. He received a bachelor’s degree from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music in Ohio and a master’s from the Manhattan School of Music." Yup, this is the stuff I read in every biography. I suspect there's a story there re his family. I hasten to add that I know none of this is my business. Just curious, that's all.
  4. Lou Donaldson - Complete Argo & Cadet Recordings
  5. David, I recommend you buy an AppleCare extended warranty, because it comes with free tech support for the life of the warranty. That includes expert advice on how to do things, as well as troubleshooting problems. I was on the phone with them for 3 hours today, trying to solve an iTunes problem (we succeeded).
  6. I did some Google searches on Horn (Wikipedia, etc.) and find it interesting that all bios gloss over his early life. All that's said is he was born in NYC. From the bios, you'd think he was born in Oberlin. I'll bet his family history is interesting...a lot of these new-age guys try to put their past behind them. Just a hunch.
  7. Tri-Centric would probably know the disc's "official" title.
  8. RIP. I'll play this later today:
  9. There are big improvements coming in the next upgrades to both the desktop and iOS operating systems. Rush gave a rundown on them yesterday (nothing political here): http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2014/07/03/new_apple_features_to_tempt_your_mom
  10. I feel bad for JLH, seeing that Flute Fever is included in the release.
  11. I know what you mean, but, without hearing it, I figure it can't be that good. If it was really worth it, they would've included it on the Mosaic. Having said that, can anyone report back on any of the new alternate takes included in this series? Worth it, or just warm-ups? I got five in the series (Tippin' The Scales, Z.T.'s Blues, Easy Living, Boogaloo, and Memphis To New York Spirit) but don't know when I'll be listening to them. I also got Sonny Rollins's Alfie.
  12. For those who do eMusic, they have the complete Oscar Peterson "Exclusively For My Friends" on MPS for $6.99: eMusic
  13. CDJapan now has these listed.
  14. According to Dusty Groove, the bonus tracks are alternate takes of Jubilee Shout, My Ship and Brother Tom. Note that the last 2 are also on the Mosaic.

    Bob Dylan corner

Dylan usually takes a hands-off approach to collectibles - he didn't object to the recent auction of the electric guitar he used at Newport.
  16. I had a real asshole puckering moments a few months ago where my iMac simply refused to eject a disc I had ripped. I had to restart it twice before it finally spit out the goods. That sucked. If it's a tray, it's a little easier to deal with. Pop the cover, and manually push the tray out. Slot load? That's a whole new problem. And not a pleasant one. I'd recommend getting the external Samsung drive, if only for future peace of mind. It's really an elegant solution. There's only one wire, because it's powered by USB, but it does need to be plugged into the computer and not to a hub.
  17. Although I like a tray, the solution is probably the same for both: unplug it and plug it back in. Also, if the tray were stuck, it's not like I'd take a screwdriver and pry it open - it's a problem either way. I now have one of those new iMacs which does not come with an optical drive. Although I initially felt inconvenienced, I'm now seeing the advantages of this: if a disc gets stuck, all you're dealing with is a $40 optical drive, rather than having to open the whole computer. (I didn't buy an Apple SuperDrive; instead, I got a Samsung SE-218, which has been great.)
  18. That's correct, the MK II has a tray.
  19. One thing I'm surprised about: this unit can play mp3's but doesn't have the ability to record to mp3 format (it only saves in standard aiff format). Having the ability to record to mp3 would save me a few steps.
  20. I totally understand. I still miss making mix tapes.
  21. Curious why you don't just burn your CDR's on your computer. Do you bypass using a computer? (Many people do these days.)
  22. My Marantz finally died. Tascam came out with an updated version of the 900SL called the 900MKII, so I got it. Nice little machine.
  23. The one that stands out in my mind is Africa/Brass.
  24. I recently got from Japan the mono Coltrane My Favorite Things and Giant Steps, and am very happy with them. I'm hoping for mono Coltrane Impulses, which I think are even worse offenders in stereo.
