Thanks for posting that; it gives me a lot of insight into the project. I don't think I'll be getting it - it looks like his Americana music has crossed over into New Agey. Not my cup of meat.

Anyone heard anything about this one? Looks like high concept, but the listing gives no details (release date June 18): Amazon
  5. He always had the coolest sideburns.
  6. This is missing one track from the session (as stated in the liner notes). I think it's available on the Mosaic and on a Chronogical Classics. I concur about this being great stuff. I much prefer Ammons to Lewis - more fire.
  7. I've ripped many of my tapes to mp3 (by first transferring them to CD). Tapes that sound pretty bad on my stereo don't sound so bad in my car or on an iPod boom box. Overall, it's a worthwhile endeavor, but it does take a lot of time. To save time, you might want to transfer them a tape side at a time, and later on separating them into individual tracks.
  8. Happy birthday, Chuck!
  9. Warner Music Japan.
  10. I just saw this on the CDJapan site. I have no further info on the release. CDJapan Very clever follow-up to this release from the '70's:
  11. Cranshaw's had an amazing run with Sonny. 51 years!
  12. Is there a "Philadelphia sound"?
  13. Just got word that Brotzmann and Keiji Haino will appear in Houston on October 9.
  14. Happy birthday, Larry!
  15. Thanks. I have the two Chambers/Blakey tracks on Drums Around The Corner.
  16. Question re the Paul Chambers Mosaic Select: I have the 1987 Bass On Top and the Paul Chambers Quintet Connoisseur releases. Is the sound on the Mosaic Select appreciably better?

  18. Listening now to Wonderful Wonderful. On track 7, "Old Folks," JDF plays trumpet instead of organ, and sounds very much like Miles on mute.
  19. Amazon Release date: July 16 Legendary saxophonist Lester Young is captured during his residency in June, 1950 at the Hi-Hat in Boston on 14 tracks and in February, 1953 at the same venue on 2 other tracks. His group includes trumpeter Jesse Drakes, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Joe Schulman and drummer Connie Kay. The two later Boston dates substitute Horace Silver for Kenny Drew and Franklin Skeete for Joe Schulman. Includes extensive liner notes and photos from the era.

  21. Ringo was a very idiosyncratic drummer, interesting to listen to.
  22. I could see Macca morphing into a Jack Bruce.
  23. LONDON (AP) — Miles and Jimi. Jimi and Miles. Fans of the late trumpet and guitar masters have long known that Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix had been making plans to record together in the year before Hendrix's sudden death in 1970. But less attention has been paid to the bass player they were trying to recruit: Paul McCartney, who was busy with another band at the time. This tantalizing detail about the super group that never was — jazz standout Tony Williams would have been on drums — is contained in an oft-overlooked telegram that Hendrix sent to McCartney at The Beatles' Apple Records in London on Oct. 21, 1969. "We are recording and LP together this weekend in NewYork," it says, complete with typographical errors. "How about coming in to play bass stop call Alvan Douglas 212-5812212. Peace Jimi Hendrix Miles Davis Tony Williams." More here: Yahoo News
  24. Nice story. Not sure why it's important to the story that the proprietor is Jewish.
