  1. Thanks. According to CNET, DVD Audio Extractor also works on Mac. Maybe I'll try that.

    Bill Frisell

I like that quote. It holds true about listening too - not that there's any imperative to listen outside your comfort zone but enormous rewards can come from doing it. Again there you still have the choice to incorporate or discard music you haven't been involved with. Yeah, that's why I saved it. I think it's a good quote about life in general.

    Bill Frisell

This is a snippet from a Ron Carter interview in Down Beat some years ago: DB: Is being uncomfortable in a musical situation a good thing? RC: It's necessary. You have to process new information - adding to your library of musical knowledge a certain set of chords, or a rhythm that maybe Steve Kroon brings to the band for the first time, or the guitar sound that Bill Frisell brings - that you had not been introduced to nor expected to hear. That makes you uncomfortable. Once you accept that being uncomfortable is another step toward growing and maturing, you recognize there's a way to incorporate - or discard - music you haven't been involved with, and you can learn a great deal. The Joey Baron albums are really good:

That's kinda how I feel about Eric Dolphy. Just sayin'...
  5. BTW, my Toast 10 returns the following info about the DVD disc: The disc you have inserted is CSS encrypted and cannot be copied by Toast.
  6. The AUDIO_TS folder is always empty. I've never encountered a disc that had a full one. A good first step could be to make a rip of the DVD to your harddrive with Mac DVd Ripper Pro. I see that Mac DVD Ripper Pro will copy the video+audio to iTunes. But what if I just want the audio?
  7. The DVD on disc 4 is a different concert than on the other 3 audio discs. What's the best way to rip the audio track separately? My two go-to programs on the Mac, Amadeus and Toast 10, don't seem to offer this option. It's also strange that on the DVD disc, the AUDIO_TS folder is empty. Does anyone have experience with ripping the audio portion of this particular DVD (and not just general information)?

    Paul Motian

Paul Motian operated at the heart of NYC jazz for more than 50 years. After working in a series of celebrated groups—including Bill Evans’s late-’50s and early-’60s trio and Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet of the early to mid-’70s—the drummer launched a lengthy series of bandleading ventures. These disparate ensembles showcased Motian’s subtly enchanting compositions and nurtured a remarkable assortment of future stars. In advance of a March 22 concert honoring Motian, who passed away at age 80 in 2011, TONY spoke with many of the musicians scheduled to appear. More here: Time Out New York
  9. That's the second title in this "series." The first one was:

    Ben Webster

Does anyone here know about these two recordings, spotted on Amazon UK? (The description of volume 2 from Amazon:) Recorded live at Ronnie Scotts in 1964, here is the second set from tenor giant Ben Webster's first appearance at the club, backed by Stan Tracey's 'in-house' trio. The second in a trilogy of Ben Webster/Stan Tracey previously unissued recordings it has been digitally re-mastered from the original tape reel. "The music here has lain unheard on the original tape reel for 48 years and has never been released in any format, making it a remarkable rediscovery". Simon Spillett's informative liner notes once again put the people and the era into context. The superb recording quality of Volume 2 of Soho Nights perfectly captures the atmosphere of the club in its old home in Gerrard Street with announcements by Ronnie Scott as MC, making it an historic CD not to be missed. Personnel: Ben Webster (tenor saxophone), Stan Tracey (piano), Rick Laird (bass), Jackie Dougan (drums) Note that I did not see a volume 3.
  11. Nice article; this would make a good mix tape! I love this observation: "Dexter’s always been a favorite, and here’s a great example of his giant sound at full power. It’s also a good example of jazz rocking harder than rock music."
  12. It was pianist Bill Potts, who played on the gig and IIRC also recorded it. Potts, as you probably know, also was a brilliant D.C.-based composer-arranger, best known for the album "The Jazz Soul of Porgy and Bess." Also this:
  13. There was no link posted. Here are the releases in question:
  14. The albums also work as albums - each one has a nice flow to it.
  15. Regarding the MM cover, Reid Miles would have listed the other musicians there.

  17. There is definitely a problem with the way the search function works. I did my "Grateful" search again (using the search box at the top of the page, no advanced search) and received the same results (with "The Grateful Dead Dark Star" thread appearing at the bottom of the second page of search results). Now, notice the following: Here's the top of the first page of search results: Notice that it appears to be returning results based on the last post date which is listed in the far right column. Now, look at the bottom of the second page of search results: For "The Grateful Dead Dark Star," the date listed in the far-right column is 22 Aug 2011, and the search results conform to that date. However, "Last Post" (see two lines under "The Grateful Dead Dark Star in Artists") shows my last post as being 27 Mar 2013. If search results were truly being returned as per date of last post, this should have been one of the first search results shown. Further, since the thread was started in 2004, I don't know why the 22 Aug 2011 date is being returned at all. Maybe the database simply needs better or more thorough indexing. But something is definitely off with the search function. I think we shouldn't be so quick to condemn those who start new threads without being aware of earlier threads, at least not until the search function is fixed by IPB.
  18. Yes, CraigP! Great to meet all of you, and Chuck's wife too. Hope they have an easy trip back north. Some pix: That last little encore they played - it was a tune that sounded familiar (esp. the riff that Hugh Ragin played). Anyone know what it was?
  19. Wonderful show. Very powerful. Great to see fellow Organissimites Chuck, Jim, Joe, and I know I've forgotten someone.
  20. Was listening to a track from this just yesterday:

    Grant Green

OK, support for my complaint today about the board's search function. Let's face it, guys, it sux. IPB, are you listening?
  22. mjzee

    Grant Green

Yeah, Grant's been discussed here so often that I'm not sure there's more left to say. I have a particular fondness for the "concept" albums: Feelin' The Spirit, The Latin Bit, Am I Blue, and (to a lesser extent) Goin' West. Spirit and Blue I think are very underrated.
  23. I enter "Grateful" (without quotes) in the search box at the top of the webpage (I normally start at the page that results from clicking "View New Content"). I do not use advanced search or go to that page to choose any additional parameters. I just tested it again both on the View New Contents page and on the page Forums Discussion. In both searches, The Grateful Dead Dark Star appears for me at the bottom of the second page of search results. Others have similarly complained in the past about search results. I guess I'm just asking why IPB can't get this right, as this defect tends to diminish the board experience.
  24. I get all that. What I don't get is why the board software returns the search results that it does, as they often seem wildly inexact and unhelpful. Do other IPB boards have the same issues regarding search results? Why can't this be improved by IPB?
  25. Thanks for both of your suggestions. I tried "+grateful +dead" and I do see it in search results, at the bottom of the first page. Since it's the most widely used thread covering the Dead, and with the most recent posts, I don't understand why it doesn't come up higher in the search results.
