Does anyone here know about these two recordings, spotted on Amazon UK? (The description of volume 2 from Amazon:) Recorded live at Ronnie Scotts in 1964, here is the second set from tenor giant Ben Webster's first appearance at the club, backed by Stan Tracey's 'in-house' trio. The second in a trilogy of Ben Webster/Stan Tracey previously unissued recordings it has been digitally re-mastered from the original tape reel. "The music here has lain unheard on the original tape reel for 48 years and has never been released in any format, making it a remarkable rediscovery". Simon Spillett's informative liner notes once again put the people and the era into context. The superb recording quality of Volume 2 of Soho Nights perfectly captures the atmosphere of the club in its old home in Gerrard Street with announcements by Ronnie Scott as MC, making it an historic CD not to be missed. Personnel: Ben Webster (tenor saxophone), Stan Tracey (piano), Rick Laird (bass), Jackie Dougan (drums) Note that I did not see a volume 3.

Nice article; this would make a good mix tape! I love this observation: "Dexter’s always been a favorite, and here’s a great example of his giant sound at full power. It’s also a good example of jazz rocking harder than rock music."
-
It was pianist Bill Potts, who played on the gig and IIRC also recorded it. Potts, as you probably know, also was a brilliant D.C.-based composer-arranger, best known for the album "The Jazz Soul of Porgy and Bess." Also this:

There was no link posted. Here are the releases in question:

The albums also work as albums - each one has a nice flow to it.

Regarding the MM cover, Reid Miles would have listed the other musicians there.

There is definitely a problem with the way the search function works. I did my "Grateful" search again (using the search box at the top of the page, no advanced search) and received the same results (with "The Grateful Dead Dark Star" thread appearing at the bottom of the second page of search results). Now, notice the following: Here's the top of the first page of search results: Notice that it appears to be returning results based on the last post date which is listed in the far right column. Now, look at the bottom of the second page of search results: For "The Grateful Dead Dark Star," the date listed in the far-right column is 22 Aug 2011, and the search results conform to that date. However, "Last Post" (see two lines under "The Grateful Dead Dark Star in Artists") shows my last post as being 27 Mar 2013. If search results were truly being returned as per date of last post, this should have been one of the first search results shown. Further, since the thread was started in 2004, I don't know why the 22 Aug 2011 date is being returned at all. Maybe the database simply needs better or more thorough indexing. But something is definitely off with the search function. I think we shouldn't be so quick to condemn those who start new threads without being aware of earlier threads, at least not until the search function is fixed by IPB.

Yes, CraigP! Great to meet all of you, and Chuck's wife too. Hope they have an easy trip back north. Some pix: That last little encore they played - it was a tune that sounded familiar (esp. the riff that Hugh Ragin played). Anyone know what it was?

Wonderful show. Very powerful. Great to see fellow Organissimites Chuck, Jim, Joe, and I know I've forgotten someone.

Was listening to a track from this just yesterday:

OK, support for my complaint today about the board's search function. Let's face it, guys, it sux. IPB, are you listening?
-
Yeah, Grant's been discussed here so often that I'm not sure there's more left to say. I have a particular fondness for the "concept" albums: Feelin' The Spirit, The Latin Bit, Am I Blue, and (to a lesser extent) Goin' West. Spirit and Blue I think are very underrated.

I enter "Grateful" (without quotes) in the search box at the top of the webpage (I normally start at the page that results from clicking "View New Content"). I do not use advanced search or go to that page to choose any additional parameters. I just tested it again both on the View New Contents page and on the page Forums Discussion. In both searches, The Grateful Dead Dark Star appears for me at the bottom of the second page of search results. Others have similarly complained in the past about search results. I guess I'm just asking why IPB can't get this right, as this defect tends to diminish the board experience.
-
I get all that. What I don't get is why the board software returns the search results that it does, as they often seem wildly inexact and unhelpful. Do other IPB boards have the same issues regarding search results? Why can't this be improved by IPB?
-
Thanks for both of your suggestions. I tried "+grateful +dead" and I do see it in search results, at the bottom of the first page. Since it's the most widely used thread covering the Dead, and with the most recent posts, I don't understand why it doesn't come up higher in the search results.
-
If I enter "Grateful" (without the quotes) in the search box, why doesn't "The Grateful Dead Dark Star" thread show up in search results?

I've just finished listening to "Garcia Live: Volume One" and can heartily recommend it. It's a great band; they just jell. Johnny De Foncesca is a much more interesting drummer than Bill Vitt. The tune selection is great, the sound quality is excellent, and each disc flows so nicely. Garcia was in great voice that night, and his solos are fabulous.

If someone posts a link to a YouTube video, when I open that thread my iPad screen will involuntarily switch to YouTube.

I like far more of Frisell's work than I don't like. His tone, his timing, his taste... all good. Here's a great one that hasn't yet been mentioned - he really carries the date: One central aspect of his style is his self-effacing manner; he seems to work hard to not be the center of attention. In that respect, he seems to shy away from the role of "leader" or "star," and sometimes I do need that as a listener - which could be why I slightly prefer Scofield or Charlie Hunter to Frisell. But I do think Frisell has thoroughly digested more varied styles than Sco or Hunter. Another one I like: But I have to say I saw once the quartet with Ron Miles and Curtis Fowlkes, and the music left me cold.

Concord Music Group Sold
mjzee replied to Mark Stryker's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
The sale is probably due to Norman Lear's getting old and wanting to cash out. -
I wasn't that much into jazz at the time (1973), but I was on Capitol's mailing list and received a copy of Cannonball's "The Happy People." It's a Brazilian date, with George Duke, Airto, Flora Purim and Roy McCurdy...those are the names I recall. A really happening, fun, zesty date. I sold my LP many years ago and haven't seen it since. So I think there's a need for a Mosaic of at least the '70's material. Could someone post a list of the Capitol Cannonballs?
-
The Capitol Adderleys have been shamefully neglected on CD. One album-note writer put it nicely - it was early days for jazz tuba. I think it's like seeing an elephant dancing - it's not that it's dancing gracefully, but you're supposed to admire that it's dancing at all.

In my experience with upgrading, a lot depends on the age of your machine. I have a mid-2007 iMac, which is the earliest possible machine for a Mountain Lion upgrade. While I like ML, I've found my machine acting a lot more sluggishly than before: programs and web pages take much longer to load.

Which turntables do you use to play your 78's? (If this is covered on prior pages, my apologies.)
