  1. The way CDs should be marketed is within a 12" cover. The large cover is a big reason why people get more invested in the listening experience. It's hard to get excited about a CD booklet and clamshell.
  2. The Nameless Sound website has a link to their PayPal. That's how I bought them.
  3. I'll be curious to hear your impressions, especially about the overall arc of his career. I formed my opinions long ago, and it'll be interesting to hear from someone listening with fresh ears.
  4. Hey, sorry about all that. Being a subscriber, I can't tell whether the links I post will allow you to read the article. I know many times they will, but sometimes the paywall gets in the way.
  5. I do find it interesting that WSJ publishes so many pieces about jazz.
  6. The term made its debut exactly a century ago, but even jazz musicians long avoided using it More here: WSJ
  7. jazzdisco.org? I just now accessed it.
  8. I don't understand why when I select 'quote' my responses post as part of what the person I responded to said. E.g. the above response to Marcello. It's confusing and frustrating Make sure where you start typing (where your cursor is) is below the tan box that contains the post you're quoting.
  9. But prices are a lot higher without membership.
  10. Let's invite Dookie Coleman!
  11. He said these gigs were where Sonny got the idea for the trio format.
  12. In the interview with Max Roach included in Ben Sidran's Talking Jazz, Max said that after Clifford and Richie Powell died, the remaining trio fulfilled some gigs that were booked before the accident; they played as a trio. Are there any recordings of these performances?
  13. Max Kaminsky, I believe. Greil Marcus memorably used this story in his put-down review of Dylan's Self Portrait in Rolling Stone: "Kaminsky had to have that record. Would anyone say they had to have this record? No."
  14. I loved the liner notes on this package.
  15. I just got the Joe Henderson. These are packaged exceedingly cheaply, even by the standards of this sort of release. Flat cardboard, pretty thin paper, encased in a thin cardboard sleeve. Original front-cover art is surrounded by a white border. No original back covers. Back covers only list song titles, composers and timings, along with RVG mastering dates (these do appear to be the most recent remasters); personnel and recording dates are not mentioned! Haven't listened to one yet to check sound quality, but assume it's fine (these are EMI releases, not boots). Still, the prices are enticing.
  16. Larry, if you're starting to check out (relatively) younger guitarists, I strongly suggest that you sample Charlie Hunter's work.
  17. Oh, yeah. I got this in 1973, but didn't know what to make of it until a few years later:

    Alvin Lee, RIP

Guitarist Alvin Lee, whose incendiary performance with the British band Ten Years After was one of the highlights of the 1969 Woodstock festival, has died. NPR
  19. RIP, you grooveyard you.
  20. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
  21. I think Sony made a big error in pricing it too high on release date; I think that served to dampen enthusiasm and sales (and engender resentment from those who bought at too high a price). Hopefully they'll learn from this lesson for volume 3.
