  1. I've been delving into Indian music recently, and just found this: Amazon 11 1/2 hours for $4.99. I'm not sure what "Bhajan" is (perhaps some sort of religious song), but the samples sound interesting.
  2. All the best in the coming year!
  3. Never mind; I found it on Amazon.
  4. Can you provide an example URL so we can see this concept in action?
  5. Can someone post discographical info for this set? TIA.
  6. Duke, Trane, Armstrong, Art Pepper, Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Hank Mobley, Lee Morgan, Milt Jackson, Kenny Burrell. There are others (Dexter, Grant Green and John Scofield come to mind) who I've listened to so much that I'm not sure I'll hear anything additional out of their work.
  7. Interesting radio program. I've always loved The Koln Concert, and offer no apologies for this. I had heard Ruta & Daitya and Bremen/Lausanne before, but they struck me as rather cold and diffuse. Koln has a warmth and accessibility that I found appealing; it really does seem like a magical moment.
  8. Very gracious remarks by Bill Clinton. And kudos to Mark Stryker!
  9. Jazz is moving up in the world: On Friday, Newark's jazz radio station, WBGO 88.3 FM, plans to activate a new antenna in Manhattan that will be double the height of its current equipment and is expected to generate static-free reception in New York City for the first time in the station's more than 30 year history. More here: WSJ
  10. PERFECT! Thanks, Paul.
  11. The Magnificent Goldberg once posted a list he compiled of 100 Enjoyable Soul Jazz Classics. Does anyone remember this list and is able to locate it?
  12. See this prior discussion: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=35922&hl=status
  13. And let's not forget his contribution of Studio Rivbea and the loft scene.
  14. Shocking. A great loss. RIP.
  15. Rumor is that Gail was gonna release it in 2011 anyway for Don's 70th birthday. A year late, but looks like it's gonna happen: Beefheart’s original Bat Chain Puller to be released on CD
  16. Also, if you can make a deal with Mosaic Images, it would be great to have a link from each album to photos taken at the sessions.
  17. I remember a DownBeat interview with Milt Jackson (towards the end of his career...probably the last one they did with him). They interviewed him in his house. He showed them a boom box he kept in his kitchen, and told them that's where he did all his listening. They were astonished that he didn't listen on some huge audiophile setup; he told them it's good enough. (I think it's this interview, but weirdly, it doesn't show most of the article.)
  18. I use pretty much only mp3. In the beginning, I also ripped using Apple's m4a, but couldn't see much of a difference. I recently experienced FLAC when I downloaded 2 Furthur concerts, and was astonished by the file sizes. I converted the FLAC files into mp3, and I could hear a little sonic difference between the two, but not enough to encourage me to look into using it, well, further. I really do think that mp3, when ripped using VBR, is good enough. I've long since stopped using my living room stereo; I listen mostly using Altec computer speakers and in my car. mp3 is good enough to let me get lost in the music.
  19. Yes, that's it: Conte Candoli, trumpet (Steeplechase only); Wardell Gray, Dexter Gordon, tenor sax; Bobby Tucker, piano; Don Bagley, bass; Chico Hamilton, drums. Just Jazz Concert, "Pasadena Circus Auditorium," February 2, 1952.
  20. Yes, on here: The Modern Jazz Piano Album - Savoy
  21. One thing that comes to mind is: complete discography -> links to album cover art -> links to album details -> links to download availability from iTunes. Album details would list musicians on album -> links to other leader/sideman appearances on BN -> see above. I think there's also a big need for availability of album notes (i.e., back covers). This would be a huge boon in recreating the "owning the album" experience.
  22. I decided to go with the Mosaic Armstrong anyway. The alternate takes intrigued me, and of course the overall packaging (booklet, etc).
  23. Yah, I had posted that here. It's never a good sign when someone's giving you a lifetime achievement award. RIP, Mr. McDonald.
