  1. Back in my youth, I subscribed to Stereo Review. Recently, just to see what's going on in that world, I subscribed to its successor, Sound + Vision. I'm struck by how dumbed-down the writing is, as if it's tailored for an audience that lacks the patience to read anything longer than brief snippets. Does anyone here read any of the audiophile magazines, and can you recommend any?
  2. Amen to that, brother!
  3. Wall Street Journal Associated Press
  4. Excellent! Another reason to be thankful!!!
  5. Not really sure what you're referring to, Jim. I know you can use part of an iPod's memory to transport files, but I've never had a use for that.
  6. Just wondering...do they have that space already protected so you can't put any data on it? No, it was a decision on my part. When you sync the device to your computer, you can see how much space is reserved for the device's operating system. My space (hey, I should copyright that name!) is in addition to that.
  7. I do always regularly update all software, as I'm always eager to see the new functionality, or apply any bug fixes. Sometimes updates can result in bugs or erratic performance - I found some of that with the recent upgrade to Lion. But for me it's about the experience. I approach a new Apple version like I'd approach seeing a group in a jazz club: I'm hoping I'll experience something surprising and inventive; occasionally I'll be let down. I figure with technology, newer is almost always better. As for "impact on apparent capacity," the only time I experienced that was when I enabled the voice feature on my iPod Shuffle (it's so cool to hear the computer tell me the track name and artist through my headphones!); it took up some memory, so I wasn't able to import as many tracks as before. But it was worth it! However, that brings up a good point: I always make sure to leave some unused space in memory on the device. For example, on my 120 gb iPod, I only use 100 gb. Why? I always figure the devise needs some empty room for "doing stuff" (that's my technical term). You should try leaving a few gb free, and see if that helps you. I experience that sometimes too. What's even spookier is when the track continues to play after the "time remaining" reaches zero. Huh?? Although I don't use it, there is an option in iTunes when ripping tracks to "Use error correction when reading Audio CDs." This will slow the ripping process, tho.
  8. On a different subject, this is pretty amazing, more for Jimi than for John. Hard to believe that's really Buddy Miles. (Audio only): Jimi Hendrix & John McLaughlin jam - YouTube
  9. The version of "Dream" on "Between Nothingness and Eternity," and specifically the duet section of McLaughlin and Cobham, is one of the most incendiary things I've ever heard. I was fortunate to be at that concert, and was just listening to a cassette recording I made from the audience, and it's still, after all these years and listenings, just jaw-dropping.
  10. It might be that some of those photos and graphics are in file types not supported by the iPod. I know .jpg and .tif work, but I can't speak for others.
  11. Wow. I don't follow sports in general, so Canadian Rules Football adds an impressive extra layer of obscurity. I don't suppose I can vote for Wolverhampton Wanderers (who beat Lester 3-1)? OK, OK, I'm an underdog kinda guy, so I'll say Winnipeg and 20.
  12. Make sure the operating system on your iPod is up to date, and that you're using the most current version of iTunes.
  13. There's a Bob Marley box coming up later today.
  14. Very sad. RIP.
  15. Rouse always sounds to me like he's playing a trumpet, but on a tenor. Those individual notes, with the tiny spaces in-between.
  16. I saw GregK's mention of Google Music on the Braxton thread, and followed it to check out the scene there. Found some great bargains: Braxton/Hemingway: Old Dogs - $3.99 Art Tatum: Storyville Box - $9.49 Ben Webster: Storyville Box - $9.49 I couldn't post any of the album images; Google's using a type that this BB won't recognize.
  17. I always thought Rouse was told to take long solos, followed by the bassist and drummer doing likewise, in order to give Monk a break. Not sure Rouse really wanted to solo that long, or that he had a say in it. As for Monk selecting Rouse, and Rouse being with him for 10 years, it reminds me of what Frank Zappa said about musicians. To have someone on a tour, you want to select the best musicians you can, but you also need musicians with "portability" - someone who doesn't mind touring for months on end, years on end. Rouse fit the bill with Monk much like Tommy Flanagan fit the bill with Ella (and George Duke fit the bill with Zappa).
  18. I downloaded some things tonight. I needed to first download the new version of Download Manager, but then it worked fine. I agree that aspects of the site, including search, are buggier than usual.
  19. Saw him once at a Manhattan club in the '80's (Slugs? Five Spot?) with Ed Blackwell on drums.
  20. Listening now to the Cleveland 4/21/72 show - amazing! This was from that NPR site that someone here posted a link to a few months ago. This is the thread: Crooks & Liars
  21. i know i can always count on getting the most up to date info on Woody Allen by coming to the Mahavishnu Orchestra thread but seriously, thanks for posting this. i assume this is a new documentary? Woody is getting on and the more attention paid the better afaic; no matter my, or anyone else's, opinion on his later output, scandals, etc... i'll see if i can get my folks to dvr this so i can watch it at a later date. thanks mjzee... This is from The Week: American Masters: Seriously Funny - The Comic Art of Woody Allen Though notoriously private about his creative process, Woody Allen allowed cameras onto the set of 2010's You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger for this two-part portrait of his life and career. The filmmakers also follow Allen to his childhood home in Brooklyn and to the 2011 Cannes premiere of Midnight in Paris, Allen's highest-grossing film yet. Diane Keaton, Martin Scorsese, Sean Penn, and Mira Sorvino are among the many friends and collaborators interviewed. Sunday-Monday, Nov. 20-21, at 9 p.m., PBS; check local listings. Guess they never got around to interviewing Billy Cobham or Rick Laird!
  22. I once saw Flo & Eddie play at the 46th St theatre in Boro Park, underneath the El!
  23. There's going to be a documentary on Woody Allen shown on PBS next week, and it takes him to his childhood home.
  24. I'm going to grab it from eMusic once my monthly refresh happens.
