  1. As the music industry struggles to find its way in the digital era, it is seeing unlikely trailblazers in the likes of Beethoven, Mozart and Bach. Last year, the classical-music charts were dominated by two distribution companies: the world's largest record label and a five-year-old, Stockholm-based digital company with 43 employees, no performers under contract and virtually no profile in the broader music business. The contrast between the giant Universal Music Group and the tiny X5 Music Group AB offers insight into the future of music distribution. 2. Great site; thanks, Marcel! BTW, if you use either the Google Chrome or Opera browsers, they can automatically translate the Japanese into other languages.
  3. Thanks, Mike.
  4. $6.49 on eMusic.
  5. I liked the one released on Inner City, tho the sound quality wasn't wonderful. IIRC, it was recorded in Seattle.
  6. I wonder whether it will be an "official" version of this release. Certainly has the name power:

The record business is a funny business. There's always the possibility that you'll buy the record and not enjoy it. Who do you go to then? Also, there's no way to hear a lot of this music in advance, to even form an opinion. A good example is the early Stan Getz material on Verve. Long before the recent Getz box was announced, I bought the Lonehill version (packaged under Bob Brookmeyer's name), and found I really enjoyed the music. Then when the Getz box came out, I was struck by how much better the sound quality was, and I bought it. I doubt I would've bought the box if I hadn't first owned the "Brookmeyer" package. I suppose guilt over having bought the Lonehill was a factor in buying the Getz box, but it was only one of the factors.

  10. On the Pablo CD "Bebop," Hot House is 18:44. Does anyone have full discographical info for the 3 Pablo discs?
  11. I just got my copy today. Obviously a lot of love and care went into the packaging and production. I remember being not impressed with the music when I heard it in the '70's; I'm hoping I'll hear it in a different way today. So many people here spoke so highly of this album that I thought it's worth revisiting. But this is the way a rerelease should be done; bravo.
  12. He had a great partnership with Tom Wilkes, who died not long ago; see Wikipedia. Also interesting because it covers the same cast of characters, see this article from today's WSJ: ‘Outlaw Blues’ Uses iPad to Explore Rock’s Back Pages
  13. One of my favorite apps is Flashlight. It does exactly what it says: it turns your iPhone into a flashlight. Great for reading menus in dark restaurants. Another one we use every day is TuneIn Radio. Allows you to get any internet radio station anywhere in the world.
  14. Mr. Robinson, who continues to actively tour at age 71, recently reflected on "My Girl"'s inspiration and creative evolution—and talked about how the song's famous guitar lick nearly was discarded. WSJ

  21. If you're going to manufacture a CD, I think you need to make it a "collectible." Not just the music in a jewel box with an insert with a picture and track listings, but something special in addition. You'd have to give some thought to what that might be, since it needs to be genuine and integral to the group. Another thing to consider is an LP/CD combo, or even an LP/CD/mp3 combo. The LP in and of itself makes the package a collectible. Also, an LP requires an LP-sized cover, which is far more attractive and alluring than a CD-sized cover. Maybe also signed by the band members?
