  1. I read when their most recent album came out that it was their last one on WB. It didn't say, but I'm sure it's because of their age. Probably no other major wanted to sign them, and they didn't want to record for an indie (or worse, "REM/CD Baby." Could you imagine??) So they decided to pack it in. Just my guess, but it makes sense.
  2. Found one more on Amazon mp3: The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings Of Gerald Wilson And His Orchestra, $36.12
  3. Agreed that this was a great tour. I'm going the low-rent route by ordering Europe '72 Vol. II.
  4. The iTunes store and Amazon mp3 now have some more Mosaic titles: Dinah Washington - The Complete Roulette Collection, $44.99 ($37.09 on Amazon) Stanley Turrentine - Blue Note Quintet/Sextet Studio Sessions, $17.99 ($16.06 on Amazon) Elvin Jones - Capitol Vaults Jazz Series, $29.99 ($27.09 on Amazon) Bobby Hutcherson - Capitol Vaults Jazz Series, $14.99 ($13.55 on Amazon) John Patton - Capitol Vaults Jazz Series, $14.99 ($12.99 on Amazon) The Turrentine's a great value, and fine music.
  5. Weren't some of these already available as Dick's Picks or as individual releases (Steppin' Out, Rockin' the Rhein, etc.)?
  6. I'm still waiting for a shipping notice. They're saying "Delivery Estimate: September 26, 2011 - September 30, 2011."

  8. I've had pretty good luck with "Amazon non-Prime" and getting free shipping over $25. When problems arise, it's due to ordering multiple items in one order - they'll generally wait until they get all the items before shipping. If one item's delayed, it holds up the order. If I only order one or two things, they'll generally ship within a day or so. An even better strategy is to make one of the items a pre-order. If, say, I'll order 3 things but one of them's a pre-order that won't ship until, say, November, Amazon will ship the other two items within a few days at no extra shipping charge.
  9. Thanks to all. Jim Sangrey turned me right - the original was actually a Don Patterson album (hence my failure in finding it doing a search for Stitt). The Stitt "Tune Up" album is actually a date from the '70's, while the Prestige track is from the '60's. I appreciate all the help.
  10. I vote for Grant Stewart. I heard "Plays the Music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn" in a store, and was immediately taken, drawn in by his sound. Muscular, rounded, harmonically pleasing, and not at all apologetic.
  11. Muchas gracias!
  12. I was merely asking for someone to link to the cover. If that's a violation, then all the "album cover" threads are too.
  13. On the Prestige compilation "Sonny Stitt, Booker Ervin, Don Patterson - Soul People," there's a track, "Flyin' Home," that they say is from an album titled Tune Up! I was looking for a cover scan, but only found the album of the same name on Muse. Does anyone have a cover scan of the Prestige Tune Up? Many thanks in advance.
  14. All 4 1938 titles can also be found on this Proper release:
  15. I just got on fine. It can be a flaky site. BTW, in the last week or so, they've added many Fresh Sound titles, and some more Chronogical Classics.
  16. There was a homemade video of this performance that was up on YouTube for a few days. You can see Sonny & co. killing time while they're waiting for Ornette to come onstage - it took longer than planned.
  17. There were a number of sets recorded at MIDEM (a record company conference, I believe) in 1980 (specifically, "Palm Beach Casino", Cannes, France, January 23, 1980). There was a set with Stan Getz with Horn and Farrell, and other sets recorded of Ahmad Jamal and The Heath Brothers with Pat Metheny. These have been released on a variety of grey-market labels over the years. I believe that's the source of your CD.
  18. That's a good analysis, GA. I appreciate that you see this as a buying decision, where you need to weigh the relative value against another title you may not be able to buy (or should buy instead). The fanboy in me has ordered it because, after all, it's Sonny, but it's good to see the downside too.
  19. This looks tasty, especially for $4.40: No discographical info, though. Anyone know recording date or who plays on it? eMusic
