  1. Mingus Big Band - although I don't know if they qualify as "modern" or not.
  2. Living in SF, I've seen those cars several times. You can't MISS them, that's for sure!
  3. Because they were behind you? How is Cafe Oto? I might try to get there on Sunday for EP if I can squeeze it in.
  4. Today I played disks from a couple of sets that I really haven't listened to much: Anita O'Day and Jack Teagarden.
  5. Next week: Mingus Big Band at Ronnie Scott's
  6. Yeah - looks a little cleaner, but overall still the same iTunes.
  7. The design can't be much worse. It's always been a very poorly designed program - which is surprising for Apple. I'm updating now.
  8. Sounds good, Peter. I look forward to a re-energized "Yoshi's".
  9. Yoshi's San Francisco changes name
  10. Good luck, GA. I think you're good to GO!
  11. I haven't used the stand-alone app for a while. I'm currently running it trough Chrome and don't have those issues. If I remember correctly, you can disable the auto-startup through Preferences, and can close it by going to File/Close (or maybe it's "Exit")
  12. I remember having an Egg album back in the 70s and liked it a lot. Don't remember why I got rid of it, but wouldn't mind hearing it again.
  13. I just listened to Heritage tonight on Spotify. On first listen it seemed a LOT less interesting than Pale Communion. This new album seems like a quantum leap for both songwriting and arrangements. I'll check out Damnation too, though.
  14. Funny you should mention Opeth. I just posted on the "Opeth Corner" thread yesterday.
  15. Been listening to Pale Communion a lot lately. Pretty astounding set of music. They cover a lot of ground - sometimes sounding like vintage Jethro Tull or Deep Purple and other times like early Hancock/Corea fusion, and a lot of influences from all over. Great stuff!
  16. About the name and the apostrophe, it's in the article:
  17. You better hurry. Hesitation can be fatal when Mosaics start "running low"! gregmo I picked up Artie's "Self Portrait" box that he assembled several years ago and got great reviews. I still haven't listened to it much, but am glad it's in my collection.
  18. Kevin (or anyone else), how is the Akiyoshi/Tabackin set? I picked it up because I really didn't know anything about them, actually. I liked the clips and figured it would be a good way to get into them. I've only been through it once, so far. There's a diversity of music, but it all seems pretty interesting.
  19. You're too easy to please, Erik!!
  20. I'd have to agree with that. This IS a great collection!
  21. Saw King Crimson the other night - VERY entertaining show. Can't say it was amazing, because I don't know their music all that well - mostly just the old stuff. But I really enjoyed seeing and hearing Fripp and the rest of the band negotiate all of that difficult music. I WAS amazed at '21st Century Schizoid Man,' which I thought would sound dated after all these years, but seeing it live was a whole new experience. They're pretty strict about no photography and even have a humorous audio introduction to the show about why you should put your phones away and just enjoy the music. Very effective. Interestingly enough, Tony Levin has a camera with him and is documenting different parts of the tour, including audience shots from the stage at the end of the show. You can see that stuff HERE.
  22. Saw Lucinda Williams tear it up at Slim's (a smallish club here in SF) last night for a solid 2 hours. Excellent show and the band is tighter than ever. Her new album is sounding pretty great, too. Here's a bad iPhone image.
