  1. I think you'll like it. There's a deluxe edition with live stuff, too.
  2. Saw him most recently in March at the Continental Club in Austin during the South by Southwest festival. He was always around there playing and participating in panel discussions. Besides a Hall of Fame musician, he seemed like a great guy and great storyteller, too. He'll be missed, for sure.
  3. A lot on tap this coming week: SFJAZZ Celebrating 50th anniversary of A Love Supreme Dec 10, 'A Love Supreme' Symposium w/ Ashley Kahn, Ravi Coltrane, Ishmael Reed & more! Dec 13, Ravi Coltrane saxophones, Nicholas Payton trumpet, Adam Rogers guitar, Matt Garrison (Jimmy's son) electric bass, Marcus Gilmore (Roy Haynes' grandson) drums Dec 14, Johnny Marr at the Independent, a small club - 12/8, TOUR CANCELLED
  4. Just got back from NYC. Saw the Matisse cutouts at MoMA and the Leonard Lauder cubist collection at the Met...........among many others.
  5. Dolan, did you get the latest Drive-By Truckers? It's probably their best yet. Also check out Sturgill Simpson. He's got a Waylon voice and is a good songwriter with contemporary sensibilities, made obvious by the title of his latest: "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music" In Rock/Pop, my favorite new bands of 2014 are Temples and Syd Arthur: Brit bands with heavy 60s influences.
  6. Just watched "Shine a Light" (Scorcese's film of the Stones at the Beacon in NYC) over the weekend, and he was featured in the band. RIP, Bobby!
  7. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, MAN! So close! There's always NEXT year ...
  8. AWWWWWWWWWWWW, TCs you let me DOWN!
  9. I predict a BIG comeback for Hamilton!
  10. Thanks again!
  11. Thanks guys! A low key, uneventful day, but the wife and I are off to NYC next week to celebrate both of our birthdays.
  12. Here's an under-the-radar Jackie sideman date that's really solid.
  13. I don't know much about him, but I remember him with Billy Harper, probably from that Angel Eyes album that Randy mentioned.
  14. Likewise. Keystone Korner, Great American Music Hall... Keystone Korner for Dexter & Jefferson/Cole, too. Freddie was at UC Santa Barbara in the early 70s - my first jazz concert.
  15. I've seen him a number of times with the Cookers, too. Appears to be doing well. Also saw him in the 70s with Dexter, Freddie Hubbard and Eddie Jefferson/Ritchie Cole,
  16. Another one I listened to this morning.
  17. Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman: The Complete Series - $95.49, Amazon
  18. Saw the Drive-By Truckers at the Fillmore last night. Was a little disappointed - they were too loud (or maybe the mix was bad), and a lot of the songs tended to sound alike. Maybe I don't know their music well enough, but I had high expectations, I guess. Sturgill Simpson opened, who's had a LOT of buzz going for him this year. He's got a real Waylon Jennings-type voice, but his lyrics are a little more abstract, and he has a couple of tunes that are down-right psychedelic. His guitar player is a MONSTER.
  19. I liked him when he was paired up with Lee Morgan, too - like Tom Cat, Charisma, Sixth Sense.
  20. Don't forget the Grachan Moncur Mosaic Select. Four of the six albums are Jackie's.
  21. Will do! The Mosaic box is a good place to start.
  22. I think with relatively short sets and multiple small venues, seating would make the logistics of navigating the festival more difficult.
  23. I need to go one of these years. Looks like a mini, jazz version of South by Southwest.
