  1. Saw St Vincent in March. Gotta say I didn't "get it". But thinking that I need to get her latest album, anyway, and try to figure out what it was that I didn't "get". Off to NYC in a week and a half. Planning to see Harold Mabern at Small's and Ben Allison at Birdland. Looking forward to it!
  2. Great - thanks for the heads up!
  3. Lee Morgan Complete 50's - Disks 1, 2 (w/Horace Silver)
  4. I'll be in NYC in a couple of weeks and am planning to see Harold Mabern. I can't figure out what their ticket policy is, though - anyone have information on that?
  5. This time around he's got Ted Nash, Jeremy Pelt, Steve Cardenas and Rudy Royston. Looking forward to it!
  6. I see that Ben is doing a few days at Birdland in the middle of July. I've been wanting to see him for a long time and he doesn't seem to get out to the West Coast much. Fortunately I'm going to be in NYC then, so the timing is GREAT!
  7. You guys are cracking me up! I've been there a handful of times - not in a long while, though. My mother was from there (the Missouri side).
  8. This show KILLED tonight. This group was amazing - on fire from the first note. Special props to Ron Beck for ultra-solid drums, too.
  9. Nice note from Cuscuna on the Mosaic site. The Horace Silver We Will Remember
  10. Chester Thompson at the intimate Joe Henderson Lab @ SFJazz on Friday. Chester Thompson Hammond B-3 organ Robert Stewart tenor saxophone Barry Finnerty guitar Ron E. Beck drums SPECIAL GUEST Kim Nalley vocals
  11. Interesting auction of photos and original cover art from Bruce Lundvall. Check it out. Doyle New York to auction the Jazz Collection of Blue Note Records President Bruce Lundvall Doyle New York auction house site
  12. Seeing him on Saturday. Haven't heard the new album yet, though.
  13. Saw the "Dr. Lonnie Smith In the Beginning Octet" at SFJazz tonight. A very creative band that played multiple styles and long extended pieces. Lonnie, the ring leader, led the pack through 2+ hours of cookin' music. VERY entertaining! See them if they come your way. Lineup: Dr. Lonnie Smith Hammond B3 Organ John Ellis tenor saxophone Jason Marshall baritone saxophone Andy Gravish trumpet Alan Ferber trombone Ed Cherry guitar Johnathan Blake drums Munyungo Jackson percussion
  14. It arrived today. Listened to the first disk - sounds better than expected! The Sue Mingus essay at the end of the booklet was pretty interesting, too.
  15. See my post in another thread
  16. Sorry, can't remember anything in particular. Just bass, sax, congas/percussion and drums.
  17. I saw Ginger last night. He seemed quite frail and had to be helped on and off the stage, and also appears to have respiratory problems. But once the music started he didn't seem impaired at all. Oddly, when he came out for an encore tune, he was smoking (!). He opened with Wayne's "Footprints" and threw in a Monk tune, among several originals. I wouldn't want to compare him to any other drummers - jazz or otherwise. I would say that his unique style is somewhere between jazz and rock. He has a very good sense of propulsion and swing, which works well with his music. BTW, his between-tune comments were very funny. Pee Wee Ellis on sax, and Alex Dankworth (son of Cleo Laine and John Dankworth) on bass.
  18. Dexter had a fine second career after "Homecoming"
  19. Going to see him tonight. Should be interesting.
  20. That will be a good show! I'm seeing (Mr.) Ginger Baker tomorrow (Sat) at Yoshi's. Should be interesting.
  21. More interesting tidbits in that WSJ piece, too.
  22. Lots of information I didn't know about him here. POSTSCRIPT: ALAN DOUGLAS
  23. I think it was one of your posts that alerted me to them. Listened on Spotify to their first record. Enjoyed it. Whilst looking for some info on the band I stumbled on that Leadmill page. The Leadmill is not that far from me but at my age I'd probably get arrested if I tried to get into the nightclub. Great! The new album is even better. Syd Arthur trivia: Raven Bush (the multi-instrumentalist) is Kate's nephew.
