Add me to the list of those who dislike ALL Christmas tunes.
If for no other reason than having to hear these same songs over and over and over and over again, year after year after year after year after ...
Last night:
Ravi Coltrane saxophones
Nicholas Payton trumpet
Adam Rogers guitar
Matt Garrison (Jimmy's son) electric bass
Marcus Gilmore (Roy Haynes' grandson) drums
Nice 2-hour set with some interesting Impulse selections from "Coltrane," "Crescent," and of course most of "A Love Supreme". VERY impressed with Marcus Gilmore, who I haven't seen or heard before. Drumming obviously runs in the family.
Josh told a story about playing a gig with drummer Jeff Ballard. He sent him audio of the tunes ahead of the rehearsals. When they finally met up, he asked to see his transcription and all he had on paper was a picture. At first he was flabbergasted, but after Jeff explained it to him he said it made total sense.
Went to a discussion about the album tonight at SFJAZZ. There was extensive discussion about that document between Josh Redman and Ashley Kahn. On first look it makes no sense, but in a another way it makes total sense.
I wonder if the threat is getting a little blown out of proportion.
I remember living in NYC in the 80's when hurricane Gloria was supposed to blow through and raise havoc. Everyone stayed home, and Manhattan was a ghost town. Ultimately we had some rain and some wind, but absolutely nothing out of the ordinary.
Anyway......I have no plans for tomorrow, so I'll stick close to home just in case.
Tonight is the first night of the SFJAZZ anniversary celebration with this symposium:
MODERATOR
Randall Kline
PANELISTS
Ashley Kahn, writer
Ishmael Reed, poet
Ravi Coltrane, musician
Michael Shrieve, musician
Sam Andrew, musician
They just played here on Monday - I missed it.
Let us know how the show is!
They will be coming back for a second leg of the tour in the spring, playing smaller venues and doing two 90-minute sets.
Spring, huh? I wonder if they will make a stop at SXSW?
SFJAZZ is celebrating the anniversary this week, including an Ashley Kahn panel discussion and concerts featuring Ravi.
