  1. Nice piece of lumber you got there Lon. Congratulations!
  2. Nojjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj!!
  3. I was at UCSB in the early 70s and knew Zan a little bit. We both did shows on the campus radio station, KCSB-FM. Those were my early days of discovering jazz, so I learned a lot from him at the time. I left Santa Barbara for San Francisco in 1974 and lost touch with him after that. Thanks for posting - this is very cool. I still live in SF and will have to keep an eye out for him.
  4. Here's a re-post from FB: Jack DeJohnette If you haven't had the chance to hear the ‪‎The Spring Quartet‬ live here's a track recently recorded in New Orleans. Enjoy!
  5. Got my Bobby and Andrew Selects today. It's ALL good ...
  6. I was about to write the same thing - and I've been going since about '65!
  7. My friend's wife shot all those covers. They were friends and he specifically asked her to do them.
  8. That's kind of an inside joke with the band and it seems it's turned out to be the truest test of whether or not an audience really knows us (and our history) or not. For instance, the next night in Detroit, when I announced Croquet Ballet the crowd went nuts like I was announcing Stairway to Heaven to a Led Zepplin audience...... It's old hat to those other guys in the band but to me it really gets me in touch with how much this music used to mean to people (and still does to some apparently/fortunately) That's a great 'inside' tip, David. I'll be SURE to yell "YEAH!" next time I see you guys in the Bay Area.
  9. Feb 24: not jazz, but an iconic album for sure.
  10. Feb 25
  11. I've seen Billy Harper a bunch of times - with the Cookers, his own group, Randy Weston and Max Roach. Also saw Blakey a number of times through the 70s-80s. More recently I seem to catch Jason Moran on a regular basis.
  12. Spring Quartet - Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, Esperanza Spalding, Leo Genovese Saw this show tonight. Great show - and surprisingly heavy on the free jazz. These guys can PLAY. If they're coming to YOUR town, don't miss them!
  13. Thanks for the heads up. Will check it out.
  14. The best looking ones are those who don't try too hard to look 25 years old.

Great live album - no argument from me. LOVE it!
  16. JJ Johnson - disk 5 Blue Mitchell - disk 4
  17. Blue Note has been recognizing these on Facebook lately. It might be nice to do the same here for all those great albums of the 60s from BN and everyone else. Today's anniversary is one of the great ones.
  18. That Seven Steps box is a real gem, actually. I don't think it got as much recognition as some of the others when it was released. One of my favorites from the 'metal spine' series.

50th Anniversary of this session today. One of the greats!
  20. Yes, but 'enhanced' with complete/unedited versions of "Autumn Leaves", "Joshua" and "All of You" - and previously unissued "Introduction", "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "The Theme". This is a very good box, BTW. You also get Tokyo (w/Sam Rivers), Berlin (one of Wayne's first gigs), Seven Steps to Heaven and Quiet Nights.
  21. I know those two albums were a mix of tunes from both sets. I just couldn't remember specifically if the reviewer got it wrong. The liner notes in the Seven Steps box are very clear about which tunes were played when. Also in the Seven Steps liners, Bob Blumenthal talks about the band playing for free: "Words were exchanged between the trumpeter and more than one member of the band on the subject of money before the quintet took the stage." I agree that the comment about "speed-metal, punk, thrash-jazz" is ridiculous.
  22. Good enough for ME! I just ordered Andrew and Bobby.
  23. Thanks for the 'Booby' input. His 60's stuff is 'must-have' for sure, but the clips on the site didn't bowl me over. On a side note, I see him at SFJazz events periodically and he seems quite frail - always has his oxygen with him. The plus side is, he has a string of performances scheduled there for next week, so he must be doing OK overall.
  24. I haven't gone back to listen to that NPR piece again, but I could have sworn that he said "My Funny Valentine" and "Four and More" were recorded from different sets (MFV from the first set, and F&M from the second).
  25. I still need to get the Andrew Hill Select (MS-016). And now that I look at the 'Running Low' list, that Dizzy box looks mighty tempting, too. Kind of on the fence about the Hutcherson set - any opinions?
