  1. BTW, Syd Arthur happens to be my favorite current rock band. Well crafted neo-prog tunes with interesting chord progressions and rhythm changes. Definitely a jazz element in there, too. I've seen them a couple of times - good shows.
  2. Going to see the Jeff Ballard Trio on Wednesday. Nice review in the NY Times today, too. An Artful Stealth Theme, Returning on Padded Feet Abstract Surprises From the Jeff Ballard Trio
  3. Another thing that I find interesting at most jazz shows that I see, is that the audiences are overwhelmingly white - whether it's artists as diverse as Randy Weston or Jason Moran or Wayne Shorter or Jack DeJohnette or the Cookers. Does anyone else see that, or could it be a Bay Area phenomenon?
  4. A little more info: Yoshi's San Francisco gets new owner, new name coming
  5. Just ordered this with the 10% "Father's Day Promotion". Can't wait!
  6. Anybody planning to see this tour? Tix go on sale this Friday for an Oct 3 show here in SF. Not cheap, but probably worth the money. An Evening with King Crimson
  7. I didn't see that - GREAT!
  8. Wow - that's big! To be honest, I never liked that venue much. It has none of the intimacy or feel of Oakland and the music programming has been very inconsistent. It will be interesting to see what the new ownership does with the food and the music.
  9. Marc Ribot's Y Los Cubanos Postizos @ SFJazz. Another entertaining night - 180 degrees from Ceramic Dog. Ribot's take on Cuban/Latin 'jazz' with a NYC 'Downtown' edge. Great crowd, too.
  10. A lot of fun tonight! This trio obviously enjoys playing with each other. The music ranges from abstract to dissonant to totally rocking OUT. Hard to describe, but worth seeing, for sure.
  11. Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog @ SFJazz
  12. Interesting interview: Marc Ribot on Working With Tom Waits and Guitarists Who Play a Very Weird Saxophone
  13. I think Jason Moran would fit this description pretty well, too.
  14. The appraiser said that was "insurance value" which is always higher than market value. Of course you never really know what you might get in an auction situation.
  15. Amazing how 'matter-of-fact' she is about her family heritage, too: father/Dexter, grandfather/Duke's doctor!
  16. I was watching Antiques Roadshow tonight when this appraisal came up. Amazing not only for the photographs, but for who brought them in: Dexter's daughter. Check it out here: Dexter Gordon Photo Group
  17. Keep on keepin' on, organ-meister! Happy b-day!
  18. Really the only funny thing about the 'battle' is how much those 2 guys look alike. The bit was...........well, a "bit". While I like Fallon better than Leno, what's becoming obvious is the SNL-ization of NBC late night programming. It's all the same now.
  19. This was pretty funny in the segment before - a 'drum-off' between Chad Smith and amazing look-alike, Will Farrell.
  20. That's the spirit! You're getting it because you have already run out of space. Yes! Good point! (it's complicated ... )
  21. I have all of those Tony's on either CD or LP. They're all nicely engineered and IMO very good to excellent performances. Unfortunate that they couldn't fit the live album in there, but the music probably wouldn't fit the 3 CD format restriction for "Selects". I'm thinking of getting it anyway, though, because my albums are packed up in the closet for lack of shelf space.
  22. I'll make sure to avoid contact with him at ALL costs!
  23. Those shows are at SFJazz, which has excellent sound. So I'd like to think they would do a good job with the audio during the sound check.
