  1. Saw Laubrock with Myra Melford's Fire and Water super group (also Mary Halvorson, Tomeka Reid and Leslie Mok) at Big Ears. What a great performance!
  2. Saw him last month with the Messthetics. A totally different experience.
  3. Large Irving Penn retrospective at the deYoung Museum in San Francisco. Excellent show if you happen to be in town
  4. It's very sad. He was scheduled to perform on Sunday at a great oceanside venue down the coast (from SF), and I was thinking of going.
  5. Lunatic Soul "Under The Fragmented Sky"
  6. I don't often listen to fusion any more but this new album is very good. And the lineup is quality. G. Calvin Weston - Drums Vernon Reid - Guitar Jamaaladeen Tacuma - Bass
  7. That piece was written by Ashely Kahn who participated in some panel discussions and was spotted at a number of shows throughout the weekend.
  8. I also expected a little collaboration with some of his many musician friends (other than his wife). Otherwise, it's pretty much a solo acoustic guitar album.
  9. I was really looking forward to this, and it's a nice album. But I was expected something a little more adventuresome.
  10. Oh - that's a shame! Too bad he couldn't help you out. Nice to have the book, though.
  11. Last Sunday: Ethan Iverson Trio w/Reuben Rogers, Gerald Cleaver
  12. "The Complete Dirty South" Drive-By Truckers
  13. I saw Mok with that group about a year and a half ago, and she didn't stand out. Last weekend was very different.
  14. I definitely have to pay more attention to him. I've seen him since the early days of Jason Moran's Bandwagon. Other outstanding drumming I witnessed at Big Ears this year came from: Eric Harland (w/Charles Lloyd), Leslie Mok (w/Myra Melford), Ches Smith (with a few groups), Pheeroan AkLaff (w/Air), and Dafnis Prieto (who I don't think I've seen before - off the CHARTS! w/Threadgill and Vijay Iyer)
  15. He provided a lot of info to the liner notes of the recent "Changes: The Complete 1970s Atlantic Studio Recordings" box
  16. I've seen Nasheet before too, but don't remember him like this! Tonight - Ravi Coltrane: Pharoah Sanders Tribute at SFJAZZ w/Tomoki Sanders (Pharoah’s son), Joe Lovano, David Virelles, Dezron Douglas, Johnathan Blake Ravi put a great program together. Tomoki sounds eerily like his father.
  17. Saw several of those shows, too. These two back to back was an astounding 2 hours of music! Myra Melford's Fire and Water: Back at the Bijou and featured some of the best live playing I've heard from Mary Halvorson. [Agreed about Mary's performance! Especially the back and forth improv she had with the drummer, Leslie Mok.] Dave Holland Quartet: Great set. Very impressed with pianist Kris Davis in this set. Also with Jaleel Shaw. [Agreed again. The Tony Williams-like intensity of Nasheet Waits was astounding, as well. Fortunately I get to see them again at SFJAZZ in May.] Friday at SFJAZZ RAVI COLTRANE: PHAROAH SANDERS TRIBUTE W/ JOE LOVANO, TOMOKI SANDERS, DAVID VIRELLES, DEZRON DOUGLAS, & JOHNATHAN BLAKE
  18. New album. Saw this group at Big Ears this weekend. GREAT show!
  19. They're all pretty good. I've been streaming them lately.
