  1. Nice article in today's SF Chron about Groove Yard Records and it's founder, Rick Ballard. Groove Yard: Rockridge shop sustains LP life even after MP3 success
  2. You've made Aggie87 VERY happy.
  3. Yep. Me, too.
  4. Yeah ... me, too.
  5. That would be an cylinder reissue, no?
  6. Clifford, you have the Horo on CD? I have the LP, but have never seen a digital version.
  7. Where can you find the original albums? "Portrait" is the only CD I've ever seen.
  8. The Mosaic box for SURE. As Skid said the first 2 disks are wonderful. The 3rd and 4th disks are mostly live, and are a lot of fun. Disk 5 is controversial in that there are a lot of big band interpretations of 60's pop/rock songs - not to everyone's taste. I'll second "In My Time", too.
  9. Hey, Conn - here's a REAL Chess babe!
  10. Interesting about Kenny Cox. This is the first I've heard of him. Definitely want to check this out.
  11. Wow. Thanks for that YouTube link! I had no idea there was any footage of this lineup. My first exposure to Billy Harper was seeing this band at the Keystone Korner. Eye-opening, to say the least.
  12. ... although not that big a fan of "Song..." (or maybe I just don't know it well enough)
  13. ... actually my Save For Later list is constantly pushing the 100 albums limit - is there some way around that? Make more lists. You can make as many lists as you want. Go to "Your Profile" and select "Lists". Each list holds 100 albums - I have 14 lists (ouch!). When you want to save an album, click on "Save to your playlist" instead of "Save for later". WARNING! It's a BAD habit.
  14. Hope you had a great one, 7/4!!!
  15. I don't think Adams/Pullen, Arthur Blythe and Billy Harper could be considered late-60's post-bop. Billy might have shown up on a few recordings (Blakey, Gil Evans, etc.), but he is pretty much 70's and beyond.
  16. "Rainy Day, Dream Away" was always one of my favorites of his 'lesser-known' tunes (if you could call it that). It's got a great laid-back bluesy groove and some tasty B-3 by Mike Finnegan. Also a nice interplay between guitar/organ/sax at one point.
  17. Whoa......dredged up a 4-year-old thread. Great album, though. Keystone Korner - what a great place!
  18. Saw a LOT of trees/branches down over the weekend. Also a couple of trees that landed on cars. Pretty wild.
  19. Got lucky. No power outage. We're usually the first to go out - here in Noe Valley.
  20. Max Roach was mentioned earlier. Members Don't Get Weary is a "must have".
  21. I wasn't thinking radio. I'm sure some of Rose's interviews are prepared by staff, but I think he usually makes them work. FWIW, I do frequently find his interviews with musicians shallow. I don't think he's much of an informed music fan and it shows. He's best with politicos and celebs. As far as taking themselves too seriously, you would HAVE to include Costas in that group. Does Linda Ellerbee have a regular gig these days? I haven't seen her in years.
  22. How the heck does one interpolate an appearance on Charlie Rose into anything positive? Rose seems to be THE biggest phony on American television. Sometimes his interviews are good comedy. If you say so, Chuck. I happen to like his interviews for the most part. There are so few long-form discussion shows on TV, it's sometimes a breath of fresh air. In fact, the only other one (that I can think of) that comes close is Tavis Smiley. Who do YOU like?
  23. Looks like a trifecta on Shipp. I saw the trio at Yoshi's (w/Gitin & Schwartz). Also (in no particular order): Dee Dee Bridgewater - SF Jazz Fest (Fall season), Herbst Theatre (Gitin/Schwartz there, too) Abercrombie Quartet - SF Jazz Fest (Fall season), Legion of Honor (Gitin again!) SF Jazz Collective - SF Jazz Fest (Spring season) Renee Rosnes Trio - Village Vanguard Joe Lovano w/Hank Jones & also his Nonet - Dizzy's Coca Cola Andy Bey (solo) - Pearl's Randy Weston Trio w/B. Harper - Yoshi's The Cookers (David Weiss, Eddie Henderson, Billy Harper, Craig Handy, Cecil McBee, George Cables, Billy Hart) - Healdsberg Jazz Fest I think that's about it....jazz-wise
  24. That's a wild album. I didn't realize that it was a popular sample.
