  1. 'Solid' was issued around '79-'80, nice enough set but I can understand why it sat in the can. Chewy-Chewy-Chew needs to listeny-listeny-listen to 'Idle Moments' , 'Green Street' ,'Matador', 'Grants First Stand', and 'Talkin About', and then report back to us on the relative and absolute merits of pre-Funky Grant Green. I like "Solid" a lot. It came out in 1979 as a "Blue Note Classic" with one of those semi-generic, white covers. I still have the vinyl.
  2. I would also be interested in knowing if the mastering is different/better than the originals. I have them already (some on CD, some on LP) and didn't plan on getting this set.
  3. I had a herniated disk. We tried therapy and cortizone, but with this problem, surgery is sometimes the only answer. These days there is a micro-surgery technique in which you only have a small, 2-inch incision and you're out of the hospital in half a day. I was back at work in a little over a week. You certainly have to watch how you treat your back forever afterwards, but it's not as devastating as you would think. Not only that, but the pain you go though from the herniated disk is gone almost immediately after surgery.
  4. I couldn't get on yesterday. Tonight it's OK. Downloaded this new album. Been getting some buzz lately. "Black Swan" - Bert Jansch
  5. Still alive and still the ex-Mrs. Ronald Reagan.
  6. freeforall should be able to give you some pointers. Maybe send him a PM, if he doesn't respond here.
  7. Had my eye on it, but kind of afraid at the same time. eMu has this, too:
  8. I believe this is his actual birthday: Heath Brothers
  9. Rockin' the HOUSE!
  10. Hey SS1, I saw that show last night, too. Not for the first time, though. Buddy Miles comes off as a sad figure in that piece. I don't have the DVD, but I have the Fillmore 2CD set - listening to it now, actually! Great stuff. Anyone who likes the original Band of Gypsys album, should get all of this stuff. A related album from Dagger Records worth checking out is the "Baggy's Rehearsal Sessions" which is a lot of jamming that the band did a couple of weeks before the Fillmore shows.
  11. I ponied up for the JJJ in its last days, too. Glad I did, BTW. I have a couple of the Elvin's on vinyl - "The Ultimate" & "Merry-Go-Round" - so I have a pretty good idea what the set is about and I'm feeling OK with passing on it. Let us know what you think of Max, sidewinder.
  12. I like Elvin and all, but I think I'll pass on this one and save up for when Max hits "the list".
  13. I've heard on "deep background" that the price reduction timeline will look something like this: First couple of weeks: 10% Next couple of weeks: 20% Next couple of weeks: 30% Next week: 40% Next week: 50% Last couple of weeks: 50->90% (90% on last day).
  14. Hey, SS1, for Criss you definitely should get "Sonny's Dream" (arranged by Horace Tapscott) and also "Up, Up and Away".

"Together Again" is definitely a wonderful album. Highly recommended. I picked this up recently. It's a nice collection. Complete Savoy & Dial Masters: Leader Sessions
  16. No, it can't! According to AMG the track is actually 9:06. Thought so. I hope the file size doesn't reflect 96 minutes worth of music.
  17. A couple more worth looking into. Just added: Dave Burrell/Billy Martin - "Consequences". Includes "Kuliana" a 96 minute track! (can that be right?) Recently downloaded: Larry Coryell - "Tricycles" w/Mark Egan & Paul Wertico. one of the more aggressive Coryell albums I've heard in a long time.
  18. Eric Dolphy "Candid Dolphy" looks pretty interesting. 6 of the 8 tunes are previously unreleased alternate takes from sessions with Mingus, Booker Little and also Abbey Lincoln (according to AMG)
  19. Good to know. eMusic has it as well.
  20. You remember correctly. One of my all-time favorite films. Definitely a great scene, too. "Stroll On" is on the S/T album, as well. Don't forget that the rest of the music is by Herbie Hancock.......not too shabby!
  21. I pretty much agree with everything Guy said here. My girlfriend went on a Moody Blues jag in the last year or so, even to the point of getting tickets to a recent concert. It wasn't a BAD show, but you could tell that they've been doing the same songs for a LONG time. Their audience seemed to be a pretty hard-core bunch, though.
  22. Happy Yom Kippur, Barak! er, uh.........I mean ...

"Sax Pax For A Sax" is a nice album. Worth it for "Bird's Lament" alone!
  24. ... , especially the second side with 'Aquarius' and 'More Today Than Yesterday'. He had an uncanny way of making tunes that were otherwise hokey/commersh sound really good. These 2 in particular are definitely worth the "price of admission".
