  1. I saw the "Still Dreaming" group a few months ago. Really good show.
  2. Seeing Myra Melford's Snowy Egret tomorrow night. Should be interesting. An All Star lineup: Myra Melford piano, Ron Miles cornet, Liberty Ellman guitar, Stomu Takeishi bass, Tyshawn Sorey drums
  3. New cover! This is the one I have.
  4. I generally don't go to those shows, either, although I did go to see Wayne Kramer's MC50 show last month. I've heard that BOC still puts on a credible show, though.
  5. I'm definitely going, but will miss that show, unfortunately. I'm sure it will be amazing. I'm only going to the 'marathon' on Friday and Saturday.
  6. Saw Jazzmeia Horn last week. She definitely has some Dee Dee in her, and a little bit of Betty Carter.
  7. Saw Jazzmeia Horn tonight with a very talented trio. Quite a flexible voice and she's not afraid to show it off. A natural scatter, too. I kept thinking of a mix of Dee Dee Bridgewater and Betty Carter (she covered one of her songs tonight).
  8. They always have interesting lineups. I'm half-thinking about going to this one. In January, airfare and hotels in NYC are really cheap. Would be interested to hear anyone's experiences as far as logistics and venue accessibility - good OR bad.
  9. Saw the SFJAZZ Collective yesterday. It was the final SF performance with Miguel Zenon who is rotating out of the group after their upcoming tour. He is the last original member. Seeing vocalist Jazzmeia Horn on Thursday. I don't know a lot about her, but her album has some interesting cuts on it.
  10. Well ... he was new to me, anyway.
  11. Billy Harper, of course. I saw an impressive tenor recently with Louis Hayes - Abraham Burton. Someone to keep an eye on, for SURE. David Sánchez can bring it, too!
  12. Most anyone who buys this most likely already has Both Directions. Why make them buy it AGAIN?
  13. Yes, Davis on that one, but the group typically featured Williams. That Schnitter album is very good, too!
  14. Not to 'change' the subject (or rather get BACK on subject), these were also good albums with the "overalls" band.
  15. I saw him a number of times with the Messengers. One of the more under-rated editions IMO, too: Bobby Watson, Valeri Ponomarev, David Schnitter, James Williams and Dennis Irwin.
  16. Now $94.04 pre-order on Amazon (today, anyway)
  17. JJ Johnson Small Group Sessions
  18. I went this year - it was AMAZING. And next year looks as good, or maybe BETTER. If you can afford to get the VIP pass, it's worth it. You get priority entrance to the venues and some of them have reserved, close-up seating, too. You won't be sorry any way you get there. It's very well run, and Knoxville is a nice, walkable small city.
  19. All of Tolliver's Strata East output is great.
  20. Tomorrow: Cyrus Chestnut w/Buster Williams & Lenny White in SFJAZZ's intimate Joe Henderson Lab UPDATE: It was a nice show. Not especially "exciting," but well worth spending an hour+ with this group in such a small venue.
  21. Saw them last night. Excellent!
  22. Saw "Still Dreaming" w/Joshua Redman, Ron Miles, Scott Colley and Brian Blade. Outstanding show. See them if you can.
  23. I was only able to catch the Louis Hayes show which was very good, but too short (not their fault, I'm sure). Abraham Burton's tenor was on fire, as was Steve Nelson's vibes work.
