  1. I'm sure it will be great. Looking forward to seeing him at Big Ears, though!
  2. I want to see just about everything! Going to have to make a lot of tough decisions, for SURE!
  3. This is available on eMusic and Amazon for download, but I haven't seen a CD, either.
  4. I guess he's not making the trip out West.
  5. Seeing the Vijay Iyer Sextet on Saturday at SFJAZZ. Looking forward to it! Slightly different lineup than the album. Vijay Iyer: piano, Fender Rhodes Graham Haynes: cornet Steve Lehman: alto saxophone Mark Shim: tenor saxophone Stephan Crump: bass Marcus Gilmore: drums

    Mark Turner

I've seen Turner several times in different formats and he never really excited me. But the last couple of times I felt that I was starting to understand where he's coming from.

    Agree 100%
  8. It's an unusual set, for sure. I haven't spent enough time with it yet, but I'm in no hurry. Something to look forward to!
  9. That would make sense. I don't remember anything about Schwartz, but that doesn't mean he wasn't there. Schwartz's bio on his website says: "Visiting appointments have included Trinity College of Music, London (1967), the University of California/Santa Barbara (College of Creative Studies, 1970, '73, '74) ..."
  10. Interesting. This would have been between 1971 & '74, but there's nothing there. I wish I had a better recollection of his contribution, or explanation of his appearance.
  11. Clifford Jordan - disk 5, the Wilbur Ware session.
  12. In the early 70's I took a 'History of Jazz' class at UC Santa Barbara. I can't remember the name of the professor (who was very good and opened my eyes to a LOT of great music), but I'm sure that Marion Brown was in residence and available at least a couple of times. I've tried searching for any info on this, but so far have come up empty. Anyone here heard anything about it?
  13. After ALL these years, hard to believe it's finally going OOP!
  14. Seeing them at SFJAZZ on Jan 20.
  15. Better HURRY! Tidal may only have enough cash left to last six months
  16. I tend to agree with you, but it's pervasive across ALL social media. I've never bothered to bring it up and learned to accept the irony of it all.
  17. Seeing this group at SFJAZZ next month. Looking forward to it. Here's the announced lineup: Vijay Iyer piano, Fender Rhodes Graham Haynes, cornet Steve Lehman, alto saxophone Mark Shim, tenor saxophone Stephan Crump, bass Marcus Gilmore, drums

    Frank Zappa

I was actually at the show (UCLA, Pauley Pavilion) where they recorded "Another Band from LA." Can't say that I remember it very well, and we didn't have very good seats, either. But at least I can say, "I was there!"

Roxy & Elsewhere is one of my fav FZ albums, so I guess this will be a must-have!
  20. I'm in!
  21. McLaughlin was great last night. I haven't seen him in about 40 years(!), but it doesn't sound like he's lost a step. Just as dynamic and exciting as he was back then. He looks great and had a lot of energy. His quartet is amazing, too. I wasn't familiar with a lot of the pieces they played, but it didn't matter as I was enjoy his performance so much. Jimmy Herring, who's touring with him, was a bit of a disappointment. His opening set seemed very 'pedestrian' to me. He's obviously a master guitar player and his band was competent enough. There just seemed to be a lack of energy on stage and I didn't find his guitar playing interesting, in spite of the pyrotechnics. They all stepped it up a notch for the final set with both bands playing together, though.
  22. I actually never heard "Music From The Source." Maybe I will ... someday! I have Compassion on vinyl, but don't have my audio system set up for records right now.
  23. OK - thanks for the heads up. I'll have them with me, just in case.
  24. I got so lucky because I had gone to New York to play with Tony [Williams] and Larry [Young], and I met Miles the day I arrived. I saw him again the next day and he said, “Come to the studio,” and that was the In a Silent Way recording. The title track is a Joe Zawinul tune and it’s a beautiful piece, only Miles didn’t like the way Joe set it up. So he said to me, “You play it. Everyone will stop and you play it.” Well, I had Joe’s part but there was no guitar part. So I said, “Listen, this is a piano part. Do you want the chords and the melody?” I was sweating so hard my clothes were soaked. That’s when he said, “Play it like you don’t know how to play the guitar.” Read more: https://www.relix.com/articles/detail/john_mclaughlin_on_miles_davis_mahavishnu_and_more#ixzz50YbwafFB
