  1. Don't think Cecil McBee's "Compassion" ever made it to CD. It's live at Sweet Basil on Enja, with Chico Freeman, Joe Gardner, Dennis Moorman, Steve McCall and Don Moye
  2. I'm seeing the McLaughlin/Herring show on Friday. Should be a blast (literally). I'll be sure to bring hearing protection.
  3. Clifford Jordan: "Glass Bead Games" disk
  4. At least they recorded a fair amount!
  5. Yeah, they were something! Obviously I wish I had seen the classic 60s editions with Wayne and Lee or Freddie, but I was too young to appreciate jazz at that time. **EDIT: can't seem to get the KK Blakey poster to post.
  6. Thanks, guys! Had a very low-key, but nice day today.
  7. I saw him at least 5 times, four of those at the Keystone Korner. Pretty sure the first 3 (1977, 78, 79) were with Valeri Ponomarev, Bobby Watson, David Schnitter, James Williams and Dennis Irwin. A very underrated edition of the band, IMO. 12/30/79 I saw this show: 1/13/1982 with this lineup: Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Bill Pierce, Donald Brown, Charles Fambrough
  8. I had no idea that the physical versions of that album were so high-priced. I have both the 2-LP and 3-CD sets, so I'm covered.
  9. Congrats, GA - you deserve it!!! But very generous of you to pass on your winnings.

  13. SFJAZZ We are truly heartbroken to learn of the passing of saxophone great and Bay Area treasure Mel Martin. A Sacramento native and San Francisco State alum, Mel led a charmed musical life, heading his longstanding band Bebop & Beyond as well as the Mel Martin Band, Benny Carter Tribute Band, Tenor Conclave, and Big Band. He collaborated with artists ranging from jazz masters John Handy, McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, and Dizzy Gillespie, to rock artists including Boz Scaggs, Carlos Santana, and Tom Waits. Mel’s relationship with SFJAZZ goes back to the very beginning, with Bebop & Beyond performing at the first Jazz in the City event in 1983. We have presented Mel innumerable times over the years, including the dedication of our Joe Henderson Lab in 2014 and a 2016 Hotplate performance celebrating Joe Henderson. Mel's contributions to music and culture will live on through all we do at SFJAZZ. photo of Mel Martin and his quartet at the Joe Henderson Lab dedication, 8/14. ?: Ross Eustis

  15. I still have about 3 1/2 weeks until my show.
  16. 14.11.2017 PRESS RELEASE: ECM AND STREAMING Over the past week we have begun the process of entering the world of streaming, and from November 17th, the full ECM catalogue will be available to subscribers to services including Apple Music, Amazon, Spotify, Deezer, Tidal and Qobuz. This simultaneous launch across the platforms – facilitated by a new digital distribution agreement with Universal Music – invites listeners to explore the wide range of music recorded by our artists in the course of nearly five decades of independent production. Although ECM’s preferred mediums remain the CD and LP, the first priority is that the music should be heard. The physical catalogue and the original authorship are the crucial references for us: the complete ECM album with its artistic signature, best possible sound quality, sequence and dramaturgy intact, telling its story from beginning to end. In recent years, ECM and the musicians have had to face unauthorized streaming of recordings via video sharing websites, plus piracy, bootlegs, and a proliferation of illegal download sites. It was important to make the catalogue accessible within a framework where copyrights are respected. ECM Press Office Munich, November 14, 2017
  17. I DVR'd it on PBS last week.
  18. Wow - practically doubled in price! Must have been a pre-order special.
  19. Great review - thanks! I'm seeing them here in SF in December.
