Damn shame my wife and I went to a few wonderful shows over the last 10-12 years and it was her favorite venue as it wasn’t like the little rooms I love so much. most memorable shows for me were Kenny Wheeler’s big band (His last U.S. appearance) and Bobby Bradford’s band with Marty Ehrlich, David Murray, Mark Dresser & Andrew Cyrille.

I have the Big Bad Brotzmann Quintet CD with Schwerdt and he’s a fine fiery free jazz pianist.

I just placed a big order with a bunch of Astral Spirits CD’s and Fundajca Slujach CD’s including the 5 CD Trevor Watts box. So this is in my cart for early next year:)

I’m getting near ordering the last 4 Rempis CD’s from his label. Problem is I also have a long list of Astral Spirits CD’s to order on bandcamp. Can’t decide which to order first!!! Plus I’m looking at filing in my Okkadisk collection with the missing 2-3 KV Transatlantic Band recordings I really want to hear.

AMM : An Unintended Legacy - 3 CD box of 3 of the 5 2015/16 concerts with Prevost, Tilbury & Rowe 3 Nights @ Cafe Oto - 3 CD’s plus DVD documenting the core trio of Evan Parker, John Edwards & Eddie Prevost from 2013. Schlippenbach joins on night 2 & a trombonist I was unfamiliar with joins on night 3. Been listening quite a bit the last few weeks since I received them. Wonderful on all counts - especially the AMM concerts. matchless recordings

I saw them at CBGB’s basement - I kept walking up to stand by the trio to get close. Maybe it was 2000 or 2001

Saw Brotzmann, Parker & Graves maybe 20 years ago and it was immense

To one of the greats that still walks this earth. A fine gentleman to boot - it was always great to see him support the NYC music as I would often see him in the audience for local shows - we would take the train from Poughkeepsie and take it home the same night. A master of three saxophones and of course his pocket trumpet. here’s hoping for a post-Covid world that has Joe McPhee back playing in those small rooms he’s traveled the world to play in for the last few decades. his latest recorded shows/studio sessions over the past 5-10 years reveal a master still at the peak of his powers.

I forgot how terrific this recorded music was. After seeing them live it was very hard for me to listen to the recordings as they seemed to pale in comparison to the 2 incredible shows I saw up close. Mars Williams & McPhee’s pocket trumpet adds a bunch and they loose compositions fit the band well. Often loosely swinging with wonderful dual drumming from Drake & Zerang. Brotzmann's Foolish Infinity live is especially good. Bishop’s Divide by Zero has a great slow build to a cinematic climax.

American Beauty 50th anniversary CD set arrived yesterday with the 2/18/71 Capital Theatre show in all of it’s multi-tracked glory. First show (Dave’s 37) is 4/15/78 (a short show) with 90 minutes bonus material from another show of that college tour. Very excited as late 77 & 78 is my post-hiatus sweet spot. Only Mornind Dew of 1978 was played on 4/15/78.

No Business as well as Not Two Records, Intakt, Astral Spirits, Pi recordings, Firehouse 12, Relative Pitch and a few others are the most vibrant of all jazz/avant-garde music labels in existence today. A quick search of their catalogue would confirm that fact.

Look up their website. They’ve been releasing stunning archival releases for a few years now as well some of the best current/modern jazz/improvised music of any label for over ten years.

No Business also has some of the most exciting new releases. I’ll be picking up one or two of the Sam Rivers archival releases soon as well as 3-4 from the new batch of CD releases (I don’t do LP’s). All of the just announced CD issues are enticing - plus their production values are very good.

Was/is the plan fit in person concerts? What kind of venue and what kind of protocols were being put in place? for me I’m just not comfortable with any gatherings at all. I’m so grateful to be able to work from home and follow all distancing measures here in NJ in order to keep my wife and I safe.

Me three - and not a group playing in a back yard like I’ve heard about or in a car at a drive in.... me has faith that we will get there next year some time....

Saw him at The Stone maybe 8 or 9 years ago on a Sunday night first set an improvised trio with Michael Formanek & Andrew Cyrille second set was a Gilchrest composition (a suite) with Darius Jones on alto saxophone & Steve Swell on trombone making it a Quintet. first set was fine with Cyrille in fine groove based form. second set was spectacular with Jones & Swell in incredible voice. What an experience.

Thanks for posting that. I still love Brotzmann as well - I know you do not! I’m also still big into Fred Anderson, Kidd Jordan, David S Ware and other expressive free jazz tenors.

If Dunmall’s tenor playing on Ghostly Thoughts is boring I want more boredom!!
