  1. American Beauty 50th anniversary CD set arrived yesterday with the 2/18/71 Capital Theatre show in all of it’s multi-tracked glory. First show (Dave’s 37) is 4/15/78 (a short show) with 90 minutes bonus material from another show of that college tour. Very excited as late 77 & 78 is my post-hiatus sweet spot. Only Mornind Dew of 1978 was played on 4/15/78.
  2. No Business as well as Not Two Records, Intakt, Astral Spirits, Pi recordings, Firehouse 12, Relative Pitch and a few others are the most vibrant of all jazz/avant-garde music labels in existence today. A quick search of their catalogue would confirm that fact.
  3. Look up their website. They’ve been releasing stunning archival releases for a few years now as well some of the best current/modern jazz/improvised music of any label for over ten years.
  4. No Business also has some of the most exciting new releases. I’ll be picking up one or two of the Sam Rivers archival releases soon as well as 3-4 from the new batch of CD releases (I don’t do LP’s). All of the just announced CD issues are enticing - plus their production values are very good.
  5. Was/is the plan fit in person concerts? What kind of venue and what kind of protocols were being put in place? for me I’m just not comfortable with any gatherings at all. I’m so grateful to be able to work from home and follow all distancing measures here in NJ in order to keep my wife and I safe.
  6. Me three - and not a group playing in a back yard like I’ve heard about or in a car at a drive in.... me has faith that we will get there next year some time....
  7. Saw him at The Stone maybe 8 or 9 years ago on a Sunday night first set an improvised trio with Michael Formanek & Andrew Cyrille second set was a Gilchrest composition (a suite) with Darius Jones on alto saxophone & Steve Swell on trombone making it a Quintet. first set was fine with Cyrille in fine groove based form. second set was spectacular with Jones & Swell in incredible voice. What an experience.
  8. Thanks for posting that. I still love Brotzmann as well - I know you do not! I’m also still big into Fred Anderson, Kidd Jordan, David S Ware and other expressive free jazz tenors.
  9. If Dunmall’s tenor playing on Ghostly Thoughts is boring I want more boredom!!
  10. Prayers for Mr. Jarrett rough rough stuff happening with my folks who are nearing 90 - 75 is much too young
  11. Only twice for me. Second time with Ulrich. first time 1/7/1999 the day Fred Hopkins died. Ari Brown played second time maybe a year later - Fred Anderson played I havn’t been to Chicago since fwiw that recording is incredible - I just received my copy a couple of weeks ago
  12. Tempted to get the 4 Territory Band CDs I don’t have. I do have 2 of them but missing volumes 1-4. I never heard the first one or Map Theory
  13. Jason - remember the days we were all discovering this stuff and sharing with each other on line? With Bruce K Woods, Gordon, Walter & Sisco? When was the Empty Bottle show?
  14. Was just listening to him the other day on a recently released show with Fred Anderson, Tatsu Aoki & Hamid Drake from December 1994. His playing on this recordings is off the hook incredible. To be at The Velvet Lounge for that show?!?! Wow - I had no idea he played with Fred. I commented that there was no one like him and what he did with Die Like a Dog quartet with Peter, William & Hamid would be legendary in a sane musical world one of my biggest musical regrets was a missed opportunity to see the full quartet back in the late 90’s. genius improvisor - what he did with the pedals and electronics with his trumpet was untouchable RIP, Sir of course I dedicate that sign off to Ulrich
  15. I find the music of my youth sounding terrific but I get bored pretty quickly my ears and mind/heart is so tuned into modern improvised music of all sorts - that most everything else except maybe things like The Dead, Can, Pavement, Sonic Youth and some obscure alternate rock things along with great historical jazz / the old favorites fade quickly. I LOVE The Replacements & Husker Du as two examples but by half a 35 minute album I’m moving on!!
  16. There was a note in the package asking if I was interested in other Okkadisk titles that they had more.
  17. Me too Chuck. I ordered from Orbits a few minutes before you posted your offer. I was very surprised that what I received was an original issue. It looks just like the set I used to have so I sure think it’s legit. My guess is the first one I bought might have been from Cadence
  18. Just got my copy from Orbit original issue #2637 seeing this for the first time since it somehow disappeared brings back many good memories of those days
  19. I’m tempted but I have a cart with like 8 Astral Spirits CD’s to hit the button on for me it’s still CD’s or streaming on Tidal
  20. Mal, Verve, Black & Blue is one of my favorites as well
  21. Pre-ordered as my original beautiful box was lost years ago I have all the other recordings and although they are all terrific in varying ways, the original stuff is in some ways the strongest. I do think the later all improvised material is overall the most powerful - and the recordings of the 2009, 2011 & 2013 tours are extraordinary - especially the 3 Nights in Oslo from 2009 & Walk, Love & Sleep from 2011. And of course I remind anyone reading that the 2 shows I saw at Tonic in NYC remain the greatest live musical experiences of my life - especially the 2002 sets. Mind blowing. From ten feet away. People screaming BROTZMANN!!!
  22. One day I’ll investigate his large ensemble stuff I'm a big listener to all sorts of free/avant large ensemble music - along with small group freely improvised music of the past 10-15 years it’s my sweetest of all sweet spots
  23. I love Butcher with North by Northwest, with Red Trio and really with any great bassist & drummer. I saw him solo once and I’m just not a fan of solo saxophone
